Presuming you're not wearing a "costume" for whatever you're auditioning for; I personally figured it'd be best to wear neutral clothing (no loud patterns, logos, etc), that's also in contrast with the backdrop you're taping against, whether it's a bare wall, or a green/blue/gray backdrop.
Thank you for shouting out Your Color Guru! As a former personal stylist I worked directly with them and they are such good people! Also there are ai options now but it's just not as good. So thank you for giving actually useful style advice.
What perfect timing! I've been going down a color analysis rabbit hole on youtube and thinking about what wardrobe tops I could consider for my Sam Christensen essences.
My choices are usually simple: t-shirt, button-down, button-down with tie, or button-down with tie and jacket. And I try to choose colors that I believe work for the character. It's best to wear something that's simple without too many patterns, which can be distracting. In the end, I think you should choose the outfit you would choose for your character and scene, and something that helps you with your performance.
Thanks for adding the note about distracting colors/patterns. I goofed and forgot to even address that! It used to be that red would bleed on camera, but nowadays most cameras are better about that. A bright red can definitely look different on camera, though. White is also a risk, depending on your skin tone and lighting.
Q about commercials. I wear brighter colors for commercial auditions. But my background is gray. I used to use a two-sided backdrop but redid my office and painted a wall gray. So I’m doing commercial auditions in gray. How important is color choice (ie blue vs gray) in commercial auditions?
For backdrop I wouldn’t worry too much about the specific color choice. You’ll get slightly different advice from different casting offices. So I’d go with something that you like that looks good with your skin tone. Not too bright. Not too dark.

Agreed! It’s a great idea to have some trusty wardrobe pieces that are not too “loud” in color, pattern, or logos.
This channel is GENIOUS!!!!!! :D THANK YOU FOR EXISTING!
