His shadows dissappear, meaning he gets rid his depression and becomes confident because of her bringing him up whenever he fell. i agree with you nice theory ;) but i have to say i feel like those white lines were more like thoughts; he see her as his savor and begins to imagine big (as seen in the part where she grew wings but fell ((cause she really can't do that no one can, but he didn't want to accept the truth))) as for the part where his shadows disappear i think it means like he's giving all his energy... so as it goes on, she truly goes into his life (as for herself) but he seems disappointed (like really from his posture it looks like he was disappointed cause she wasn't the person that could make him fly or i don't know other expectations) and he does try to stay but can't instead of tring to stay he goes off (like they say staying loyal is a choice not always feelings) but i also agree that the same might have happened to him as well. :)

This time watching it I got the impression that he became infatuated with a girl without really getting to know her, then fell in love with the thought of her, rather than who she really is, so at the end when she was no longer spectral, but as solid as he is, he saw he didn't really love her after all, and was just enamored with the "thought" of her, realizes this, then sadly leaves, which breaks her heart. well it seems more like what happens in every other relationship. the chase and the dream is what makes it interesting, once the "dream" comes to fruition it isn't as interesting and vivid as it used to be. meaning that in relationships, after the "honeymoon phase", you enter a state of boredom? or you just get used to the relationship and dont do as much anymore? or... maybe he dreamed of that girl so much, and wanted her to be 1000 things and when he realized she is just normal, or that she changed for him it was maybe no longer of interest? for me it all cuts down to the image we make in our mind about something, and put it on a pedestal, only to realize it's not what we wanted... this short is really up for interpretation, as one might want to see it, there is no right or wrong answer, that's what art is all about. we can only guess what the creator thought while making it :)

Reading the theories (which is pretty much equivalent as to pouring a bucket of water in a flood) I've been reading how this guy is in love with the fantasy, not the real girl. But my first thoughts are that he just gave up loving her and moved on. Notice how most of the time the man would be chasing the lady only to have her vanished whenever he thought finally he be happy? The way she moves and dances about around him seems almost child-like and always had that 'Give me attention' vibe. But whenever he could get comfortable with her she just stops suddenly and "vanished". My guesses are that she is playing VERY hard to get and amused herself by toying around with his feelings. Eventually she too fell in love with him but a lover's heart could only be broken so many times. When she actually does show affection towards him he has become distrustful and even cynical. The way she held his hands and stood on her toes like a cheerful child, exactly like the way she played him before. He sees this and after what she did to him before, only believes that she will just break his heart again, thus leaving her without looking back. When he began to leave, she began to realize why. And that is the 14 ton iron that broke the camel's back. Well that was a doozy, writing a theory at 3:30 AM. Really hope this makes sense.
This is essentially the meaning that I have read into this beautiful piece. He realizes that, even as attached as he is to her, he cannot live with or trust her fickle nature. And so, after waiting an eternity he cannot bring himself to stay in this Love, having been so thoroughly worn by it, and controlled by it. So there are a lot of interpretations of this in the comments so I'll just say mine. It's pretty straightforward. The man spends each day dreaming of his loved one, longing to see her again. As I watched this I was struck with the image of dancing a two-person dance by yourself, imagining the other in your arms so that's where I got it from. With each passing day he thinks of her. His fantasies of her become more and more fantastical, hence the wings. Through this his image of her changes. When she finally returns to him she is not as beautiful and amazing as the fantasy he has come accustomed to. This makes him stop loving the real girl and leave to be with the imaginary. Maybe... Not that straightforward but that's what I felt.
Reading all the comments about this lovely video says that it is a true work of art. It speaks to people in a way that's meaningful to them. That's what keeps us coming back to great creations time after time. So much depth to what seems at first a line drawing of a dance but has many layers.

I know how much time and effort it takes to animate something, and the art work is really cool, and the whole end product is truly beautiful. I wasn't dissing the animation. Actually dancing this would require a lot of skill too, and I just thought it would be cool to see it.
My opinion: The man is an author, artist, musician, or some other some other creative sort of person, and the woman represents his inspiration. Inspiration is a beautiful but often illusive thing- it teases at the mind, sometimes coming at night when you cannot hold on to the ideas it brings. I think the man is in the middle of trying to create something, possibly his greatest work, and that the inspiration for it tugs at him constantly, but is so illusive it makes the work an exhausting process. However, although it drive him mad, he loves it anyway, for how could he not? Sometimes he cannot sleep because of the thoughts that dance through his mind, and other times he reaches for idea that will give him strength to finish his work, but is bogged down by the exhaustion that plagues him, and the thought is lost. Finally, as he begins to lose hope, he catches hold of Inspiration and holds her long enough to bring his work to its completion. For a few sweet moments he enjoys the beauty of the masterpiece.... but its creation has taken its toll on him. He can't stay... I think perhaps he may be dying. As he leaves, we see his reluctance, but also his acceptance of how things must be. He is mourned by the Inspiration that graced his final days.

Wow. What I got from it was he wanted her back and at the end she wanted him back. This is classic misunderstanding. They both want each other but thinks the other person doesn't. HATE it when that happens in a story. Usually it's because both parties are too scared to say how they truly feel for fear of being rejected. But come on, isn't the agony of not knowing worse and more debilitating, neither can move on. Beautifully done though.
After many years i re-watched this video and now i finally understand MY meaning for it! Is a father and daughter dance, were at the beginning the man is lost, he doesn't know what to do but one day, the day that he meets her daughter e finally understand what e has to do!! Raise the girl into a strong women, the end is sad because he die without knowing if he succeeded in doing that and the girl is sad because she lost her father figure...
It's beautiful, but also sad. It shows how some men are simply are just sketches, and then when you trust them and you show him your every shadow, they leave because they lost interest. I loved the woman's movements!
i am a bit confused. i am not sure if its about a man falling in love with the fantasy of a woman, who showed her real self at the end but he didnt know what to do with her and left her or if he fell for someone and was caught up soo much in the thoughts and fantasies of her that he didnt realize that the girl at the end was the real her and not the one he made up, who'd leave him soon again (so he left her cuz he thought she'd leave him anyway) but did anyone notice that after a while all the shading he had disappeared? i feel like he was exhausted and all that in the end not being able to see the truth
i've seen a lot of interpretations, but i personally think it's about a guy who just got out of a break-up with the perfect woman. she was everything he wanted and more, but then, she dumped him. he fell into depression, while the woman was fine. she gloated around him while he tried to get back with her. towards the end, the woman realizes her feeling towards him, and confesses that she wants to be with him or that she loves him, but terrible timing, because he was already in the process if getting over her. he had the choice of getting back with her, and most likely suffering that pain again, or leave her and that pain. he left, and the woman became what the guy was in the beginning. depressed, lonely, longing for a relationship that was probably not going to happen. he didn't turn white like she did in the beginning, because this hurts him too, it does. he's getting over all of it and thats why he was a subtle gray. that's my opinion but i dont know haha
This was too relatable. I pushed away near the end after an on and off relationship. Feel like even though I had good reasons, she still made me happy most of the time. Being 40, maybe I shouldn't have, and just coped with the problems that had been present for 7 years.

So I watched an interview on this piece and I just felt it might help if I could explain it a little. When he came up with this idea he was on an airplane and missing his wife so he wanted to express it in this piece. Being away from my loved one for just a month made me feel very similar so I can understand. He did come back I think he was just on a business trip. But he really loves the interpretations that people are coming up with.
He thinks of this girl he loves everyday, but never spoke to her. He knows the girl loves him just as much, although though she feels the same love but she shares the same shyness. He loves her more than himself and it drives his soul down every day. These figures represent not only their thoughts but their spirits trying to connect and bring them together, but when he sees her he cannot speak. Leaving her lost with her love and him lost from his heart.
This song is by a band called The Weepies called World Spins Madly on. I love them. I’ve seen them in concert twice. This song always makes me cry. I found this video the day after my friend died and it perfectly explains how I felt that day. “Woke up and wished that I was dead with an aching in my head I thought of you and where you’d gone and let the world spin madly on”. 💜 I may never have found this song without this video so thank you for making it.

This is incredibl! Just wildly beautiful! I wish the big animation studios would hire artists like those that do these kinds of things. They put out shorts all the time and this one is way better than most in my opinion. I even like the sketch quality of it. It doesn't feel "unfinished" like some might think.
It feels like I just watched a dance from a broadway musical about a love story. It feels like that was the stage and those were the actors... it felt so real.... not like an animation or anything. REALLY COOL!

Even though I know that this video is probably representative of heartbreak and a man falling in love with the idea of this woman and breaking her heart because of it and the chain that goes on and on and etc., I watch this video and instead imagine that the man is dreaming of a girl (not necessarily of romantic relation) who passed away and he is thinking of her and constantly imagining her and where she has gone out of this world. I love to interpret it this way because it makes everything feel much heavier, and I feel like the weight of the song itself is better represented through this interpretation as well. At the end I have to imagine that from the other side she is heartbroken that she can never truly reach him. Maybe I only imagine the story this way because the girl looks so much like someone I used to know, a dancer, who was one of the most radiant lights I’ve ever met in this world, and of whom passed away at the young age of 23. It is healing to watch this video and imagine that the people who knew Debbie personally are still grieving and thinking of her all these years later, and that she is trying with all her might to reach them although it continues to be in vain. Regardless of how you choose to interpret the video or what is the correct answer to all of the symbolism, this is one of the most beautiful works of art on the internet and perhaps in the world. This is such a beautiful story. I don't know about many other people, but this story is this to me: A guy spends all this time thinking about the perfect girl. Spending all their time together, falling in love, making memories etc. But then he finally has the girl he's always dreamed of, yet, he doesn't want her. He doesn't love her as much as the idea of loving her. So he leaves her. But she isn't the bright bundle of joy anymore...
So beautiful and smooth. Amazing considering it's all in a sketch like style.. Which I usually associate with messy or jerky. This animation has straightened that up considerably.
I don't really know but I enjoy it. I got the impression that he couldn't get her off his mind, and teased him by playing hard to get. Ok, I never comment on videos or anything like that, but I feel a need to express my opinion about this. This is one of the most beautiful, incredible pieces of art I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Every time I watch it, it continues to surprise me, inspire me, and puzzle me. Still haven't figure out the message, but that's part of the magic of this video. That I can watch it over and over and over and get a different take away every time, is an incredible thing. I actually broke down into tears the first time I saw this, and it always invokes a really strong emotional reaction from me, even when I already know exactly what will happen. I am awed and inspired, and I love this video. That's all, just saying, thank you to whoever made it.
This may be my third or fourth time revisiting this over the last 7 years and every time, having forgotten the comments' theories and interpretations for it, I only see one narrative: he's thinking of her, missing her and their fluent dynamic; and then, at the end, when the shading strength is reversed, we see that she is missing him too. But because both are too scared to reach out, they continue to suffer alone. Their insecurities get the best of them, so that both can't quite make the leap of faith that this isn't just their imagination, that this could be reality.

So there are a lot of interpretations of this in the comments so I'll just say mine. It's pretty straightforward.
The man spends each day dreaming of his loved one, longing to see her again. As I watched this I was struck with the image of dancing a two-person dance by yourself, imagining the other in your arms so that's where I got it from. With each passing day he thinks of her. His fantasies of her become more and more fantastical, hence the wings. Through this his image of her changes. When she finally returns to him she is not as beautiful and amazing as the fantasy he has come accustomed to. This makes him stop loving the real girl and leave to be with the imaginary.
Maybe... Not that straightforward but that's what I felt.

Reading all the comments about this lovely video says that it is a true work of art. It speaks to people in a way that's meaningful to them. That's what keeps us coming back to great creations time after time. So much depth to what seems at first a line drawing of a dance but has many layers.

I know how much time and effort it takes to animate something, and the art work is really cool, and the whole end product is truly beautiful. I wasn't dissing the animation. Actually dancing this would require a lot of skill too, and I just thought it would be cool to see it.

My opinion:
The man is an author, artist, musician, or some other some other creative sort of person, and the woman represents his inspiration. Inspiration is a beautiful but often illusive thing- it teases at the mind, sometimes coming at night when you cannot hold on to the ideas it brings. I think the man is in the middle of trying to create something, possibly his greatest work, and that the inspiration for it tugs at him constantly, but is so illusive it makes the work an exhausting process. However, although it drive him mad, he loves it anyway, for how could he not?
Sometimes he cannot sleep because of the thoughts that dance through his mind, and other times he reaches for idea that will give him strength to finish his work, but is bogged down by the exhaustion that plagues him, and the thought is lost.
Finally, as he begins to lose hope, he catches hold of Inspiration and holds her long enough to bring his work to its completion. For a few sweet moments he enjoys the beauty of the masterpiece.... but its creation has taken its toll on him. He can't stay... I think perhaps he may be dying. As he leaves, we see his reluctance, but also his acceptance of how things must be. He is mourned by the Inspiration that graced his final days.

Wow. What I got from it was he wanted her back and at the end she wanted him back. This is classic misunderstanding. They both want each other but thinks the other person doesn't. HATE it when that happens in a story. Usually it's because both parties are too scared to say how they truly feel for fear of being rejected. But come on, isn't the agony of not knowing worse and more debilitating, neither can move on. Beautifully done though.

After many years i re-watched this video and now i finally understand MY meaning for it!
Is a father and daughter dance, were at the beginning the man is lost, he doesn't know what to do but one day, the day that he meets her daughter e finally understand what e has to do!! Raise the girl into a strong women, the end is sad because he die without knowing if he succeeded in doing that and the girl is sad because she lost her father figure...
It's beautiful, but also sad.
It shows how some men are simply are just sketches, and then when you trust them and you show him your every shadow, they leave because they lost interest.

i am a bit confused. i am not sure if its about a man falling in love with the fantasy of a woman, who showed her real self at the end but he didnt know what to do with her and left her or if he fell for someone and was caught up soo much in the thoughts and fantasies of her that he didnt realize that the girl at the end was the real her and not the one he made up, who'd leave him soon again (so he left her cuz he thought she'd leave him anyway)
but did anyone notice that after a while all the shading he had disappeared? i feel like he was exhausted and all that in the end not being able to see the truth

i've seen a lot of interpretations, but i personally think it's about a guy who just got out of a break-up with the perfect woman. she was everything he wanted and more, but then, she dumped him. he fell into depression, while the woman was fine. she gloated around him while he tried to get back with her. towards the end, the woman realizes her feeling towards him, and confesses that she wants to be with him or that she loves him, but terrible timing, because he was already in the process if getting over her. he had the choice of getting back with her, and most likely suffering that pain again, or leave her and that pain. he left, and the woman became what the guy was in the beginning. depressed, lonely, longing for a relationship that was probably not going to happen. he didn't turn white like she did in the beginning, because this hurts him too, it does. he's getting over all of it and thats why he was a subtle gray.

This was too relatable. I pushed away near the end after an on and off relationship. Feel like even though I had good reasons, she still made me happy most of the time. Being 40, maybe I shouldn't have, and just coped with the problems that had been present for 7 years.

So I watched an interview on this piece and I just felt it might help if I could explain it a little.
When he came up with this idea he was on an airplane and missing his wife so he wanted to express it in this piece. Being away from my loved one for just a month made me feel very similar so I can understand. He did come back I think he was just on a business trip. But he really loves the interpretations that people are coming up with.
This is setiously one of my favourite animations.
He thinks of this girl he loves everyday, but never spoke to her. He knows the girl loves him just as much, although though she feels the same love but she shares the same shyness. He loves her more than himself and it drives his soul down every day. These figures represent not only their thoughts but their spirits trying to connect and bring them together, but when he sees her he cannot speak. Leaving her lost with her love and him lost from his heart.
This song is by a band called The Weepies called World Spins Madly on. I love them. I’ve seen them in concert twice. This song always makes me cry. I found this video the day after my friend died and it perfectly explains how I felt that day. “Woke up and wished that I was dead with an aching in my head I thought of you and where you’d gone and let the world spin madly on”. 💜 I may never have found this song without this video so thank you for making it.

On Joe Smith 's original post for this I was saying how it made me sad how he just left her and those kinds of things make me want to put on running shoes and just runnn like heck away away away kind of like Forest Gump did when he was finally with Jenny and she left him. So I was telling Mary W I'd start off running North so I could visit her in Nebraska where she could jog along side me and fill me in on how everyone is doing on G+ then I'd jog to Maine and make my way down South to see you in Florida where you can fill me in on how everyone on G+ is doing (if you don't want to jog beside me I'll just jog in place as we chat) LOL ... then I'll jog back to California. That's just the kind of instantaneous reaction I got when I saw the end to this... LOL... just want to clarify that!

Even though I know that this video is probably representative of heartbreak and a man falling in love with the idea of this woman and breaking her heart because of it and the chain that goes on and on and etc., I watch this video and instead imagine that the man is dreaming of a girl (not necessarily of romantic relation) who passed away and he is thinking of her and constantly imagining her and where she has gone out of this world. I love to interpret it this way because it makes everything feel much heavier, and I feel like the weight of the song itself is better represented through this interpretation as well. At the end I have to imagine that from the other side she is heartbroken that she can never truly reach him. Maybe I only imagine the story this way because the girl looks so much like someone I used to know, a dancer, who was one of the most radiant lights I’ve ever met in this world, and of whom passed away at the young age of 23. It is healing to watch this video and imagine that the people who knew Debbie personally are still grieving and thinking of her all these years later, and that she is trying with all her might to reach them although it continues to be in vain. Regardless of how you choose to interpret the video or what is the correct answer to all of the symbolism, this is one of the most beautiful works of art on the internet and perhaps in the world. Lots of love to the artists, dancers, and The Weepies.

This is such a beautiful story. I don't know about many other people, but this story is this to me:
A guy spends all this time thinking about the perfect girl. Spending all their time together, falling in love, making memories etc. But then he finally has the girl he's always dreamed of, yet, he doesn't want her. He doesn't love her as much as the idea of loving her. So he leaves her. But she isn't the bright bundle of joy anymore...

I don't really know but I enjoy it. I got the impression that he couldn't get her off his mind, and teased him by playing hard to get. Towards the end she realized she did have interest for him, but when they got together he decided she wasn't worth it. She cried know the fact that made a mistake with messing with him. I don't that's what I thought it meant.

Ok, I never comment on videos or anything like that, but I feel a need to express my opinion about this. This is one of the most beautiful, incredible pieces of art I have ever had the pleasure to watch. Every time I watch it, it continues to surprise me, inspire me, and puzzle me. Still haven't figure out the message, but that's part of the magic of this video. That I can watch it over and over and over and get a different take away every time, is an incredible thing. I actually broke down into tears the first time I saw this, and it always invokes a really strong emotional reaction from me, even when I already know exactly what will happen. I am awed and inspired, and I love this video. That's all, just saying, thank you to whoever made it.
I loved every part of that.
This may be my third or fourth time revisiting this over the last 7 years and every time, having forgotten the comments' theories and interpretations for it, I only see one narrative: he's thinking of her, missing her and their fluent dynamic; and then, at the end, when the shading strength is reversed, we see that she is missing him too. But because both are too scared to reach out, they continue to suffer alone. Their insecurities get the best of them, so that both can't quite make the leap of faith that this isn't just their imagination, that this could be reality.
