  • The island of Heimaey, just off the coast of Iceland, is a breeding ground for Atlantic Puffins. But the colorful birds are not as plentiful here as they once were. Scientists say their numbers have been down by a third or more just since 2002. And one threat to the puffins is the local fishing village's bright lights, which can confuse young pufflings and draw them away from their nocturnal feeding ground. Enter the Puffling Patrol - young children who volunteer to rescue lost birds. Lee Cowan pays a visit.

This is Iceland for you. Exceptionally low crime rates and great sense of community. It is a wonderful place to grow up.

There was a time, when I used to look into my father's eyes
In a happy home, I was a king I had a golden throne
Those days are gone, now the memories are on the wall
I hear the sounds from the places where I was born.

Tradition and quality family time? The mind boggles!! Just turn the lights off - simple! And stop eating them!!
Tagging the pufflings may be part of research but doing it in this way, with lots of unnecessarily handling, must cause them to suffer extreme stress. If you want to see puffins come to the RSPB reserve at Bempton Cliffs in N. Yorkshire, UK.

its not as simple as turning the lights of its a fishing village and there are trawlers coming in and out all day and night and saving them is better than just letting them die i live on the island and btw hunting very limited 1 day a year and no guns really just a traditonal net. and extreme stress what are you talking about if you think they get stressed being put into boxes your mistaken they live in dark damp burrows wiche is almost the same thing as box and we have other islands around where alot of them live like elliðey they dont do any better than there counter parts on heimaey next time know waht your talking about sorry for being mad but this such and ignorent comment and they must be doing well when about 8-10 million of them live in the archepeligo comperd to about 500,000 puffins in the RSPB reservation

You are missiuderstanding the problem only 10mill puffins live in the arcepelico while 10-30k land in the town and you can't just not have lights in the town bacause planes cars boats people's homes ect but let's say there's a power outage and the puffins take off they still might not have the range to make it out to sea or worse they might land in the pier Wich coats them in oil and they will land in the town anyways because they don't have the range. Okay so let's say you feed them steroids and turn of the town then people in the town will get mad because A you took away the only place on the planet where you can rescue puffins B they don't have lights C you fed them steroids D you reduced Iceland's tourist income by removing puffins from the town .now companies will get mad becauseA you cut the power to the town making the cruel Icelandic nights freeze people's houses B they can't profit without power C there's no power and the world will hate you for taking the only place on the planet where puffins fly into town

And the real problem is the fish they eat is going away because of global warming so even if we did what you wanted to do the puffins will still be endangered

Leave it to them to invade an island and then nearly make the species extinct.

can they lower the lights in the town at night when it's puffin season ?

    • @Boop__Doop

Unfortunately we can't it would be a big problem plus the puffin patrol is such a big part of our culture that we probably wouldn't want to do it even if we can

Birds are fragile. I worry about children or adults holding the pufflings too tightly and injuring them.

Not sure what you mean, but at 6:00 minute mark , are you talking about her ?
if so, that is a Ulla peysa or Wool sweater , most likely home made, the elders usually know hoe to nit them.
if she is not the one you meant, maybe give a timestamp
