I never tire of watching this video; the sound of that engine working flat out is just tremendous. And the way that the driver caught that, probably unexpected, slip between the two tunnels was first class. No easing off in case of another slip, just straight back onto full regulator, to get the job done. Brilliant!
Wow. I thought these were quiet locomotives, wrong. That's a stiff climb. I live in Newcastle NSW Australia and we have grade's just as steep as this climb. The steepest grade and probably longest in Australia is the 33 miles of 1 in 33 over the Blue Mountains, actually isn't alis Gile on the S and C the highest point by rail in England, well in the Blue Mountains there's a town called Valley Heights is the same height as Alis Gile and in the days of steam that's where they would put a bank engine on to Katoomba then down hill to Lithgow. Just watch the DVDs of when 4472 Flying Scotsman visited Australia in 88/89. P.S. SORRY FOR BUTCHERING YOUR SUMMIT'S NAME, I can't remember how to spell it.
I believe the driver was Pete Robert’s ex fireman 70A, Nine Elms. An unconverted MN would have been a joy to see hauling that load. The good ol WC’s could pull out the stops & do the extraordinary when reqd tho. Prob putting out around 1800 - 2000hp to get that lot over the top. Not up to speed with current rule book, but ; Was scratching my head a bit as to why the 73 couldn’t shove. Just leave her unhooked as was in steam days . Once over the top drift up to next signal which would be red anyways & stop. Tis all track circuited! Nice video record tho of the climb. Thank you.

Fabulous video. Thanks for posting. I got quite emotional when the whistle was sounded at the top of the bank. Great stuff from a great engine.

Sounds tremendous the footplate crew did very well to do it unassisted, do you know what the load was?
I think I put it in the description.
430 tonnes.
Good old tangmere the dirty old girl
Shame the names of the crew were not recorded, never forget there are two, without a good fireman the drivers not going to achieve anything.
