There's nothing wrong with having a supply of mulch under the benches of the greenhouse... You should do a video on your thoughts on greenhouse alignment, N-S vs E-W...
I think I promised you a video on high tunnel design anyway. My basic thoughts on orientation is that if you can manage it, long axis east west gives you the most light capture, the science is clear on that. But sometimes you have to orient more based on the site conditions due to slope or shade or lot shape or whatever, and its still OK.
My favorite part was the cactus! I have some spineless Opuntia humifusa , still have the annoying glochids but not the long white true spines. I’ll send you some pads. Opuntia ficus-indica is so fast growing I think it could almost be managed as an annual for cold climates, if not directly from seed then from large cuttings. I’ve seen plants 6 feet tall in two years from seed , protected from hard freezes, of course.
Wow! I have never heard of a spineless humifusa, not that I'm as tapped into the horticultural trade nearly like you are. That would be really helpful. Some stuff I've read on Opuntia seems to indicate that the species names are a bit of a mess, and most of them seem to be interfertile from what the reading I've done. There is definitely differences in behavior between the two clones here in the video. The macrorhiza does not wrinkle in the sub-freezing weather, while the humifusa shrivels up and collapses when it gets really cold. They seem to have different winter survival strategies.
I've been wanting a tour of your farm. This is a good start. Is the "Big House" unheated? I'm a little behind on my Asian greens and brassicas, but the lettuce is good to go. It's actually refreshing to see the chaos in the greenhouse. It can't always be magazine ready. Are you still planning to carry on with the Ruth Stout plot? Anyway, thanks for the the update.
The big house is still just a large high tunnel, so it is unheated. But the bigger the house the earlier it will warm up due to surface area to volume stuff. As far as the Ruth Stout plot is concerned, I am still planning on testing it out, not really good potato planting time yet.
You have wonderful greenhouses! I enjoyed the tour of your plantings and am curious about the rock mass heater.
Maybe someday I'll do a video on it when I rebuild the firebox.

I actually have acquired True Sweet Potato Seeds this year, so I'm going to take a stab at growing them this spring.
