Kaiji, Liar Game, Battle Royal or similar genre known as Death Game. Mostly Japanese mangas but they made the games easier as children plays and put some 70, 80s Korean culture into it. Making it universial and unique at the same time.
I think reason 6 should be at the very top. And it is not underlying, it is the drive force and very much in your face. Characters are facing violent premature death in order to pay debts and provide a less harsh living to close ones. We are in a crisis period. And before that wealth gap already was a growing concern. Followed by all above mentioned reasons, of course, sets, acting, music etc.
I didn't expect this series to be this good. The acting was so outstanding. Every game every situation I felt so connected to every character. The picture, the colors, the concept, the acting....I mean it was just so awesome.
Definitely check out more kdrama and films. Quality is off the charts. So many titles too. Perfect example is the Good Doctor that got rebooted for an American audience. Korean version is simply "chef's kiss" so I'm gonna have to check out the American version soon.

The reason of success is not genre. It is because of the detail of characters and modern society mechanism. Simple it is the result of great work and effort. The director said he lost 6 teeth by the stress of film making.
He solely wrote and directed the show which made him so stressful. It would've been much eaiser for him if there were a few more writers to support him.
This was a masterpiece. Highly recommend watching it in original language with subtitles. The acting is superb, awesome script, amazing cinema set, awesome work.

I don’t like K-dramas that much anymore. Korean thrillers and actions are so much better and will cater to both genders (especially male) unlike the usual Kdrama love stories. Have watched several shows like Train to Busan, Kingdom, Sweethome which are good. I would say it was a good thing that K-industry is focusing on thriller/actions since their cinematography is really good and they better do cause not all girls like me likes the usual korean love dramas lol and what more with the guys. They are now gaining both audience categories because of their current shift and they are doing really well is all I can say.
Koreans have been making epic shows since the past few years and have been popular in Asia. Kingdom is one Korean series which is also popular and very well-written.It's not like an ordinary zombie-themed film. It has a unique touch in it and has substance in it. I am not really a fan of shows with historical setup but this one is really good.
The show didn’t invent the dystopian survival action horror genre but it didn’t need to and just pulls it off well. The ultra violence is for the mouth breather audience but the brilliance of the show are the many references to Korean social problems today - household debt time bomb, migrant worker exploitation. And of course, how far we’re willing to bend morals in the face or death or money.
The creativity in South Korea is incredible! I've been watching K-dramas and films since 2012. They are just so much better than American made mainstream TV shows, except for specials on HBO Max and other "cable" networks. I literally gave up American TV in 2012, cancelled Cable TV and now only watch subscriptions through my computer or Smart TV. I only miss it when I want to watch a football game - but that's what sports bars and friends' houses are for!

Living in Vietnam I get a wide variety of movies and television shows on Netflix from all over the world. I watched Squid Game when it first came out and got sucked in right away. With all the viewing of shows and movies probably does stand out as one of the best and most original that I've seen on the platform. Great to see these amazing Asian actors on the show get the recognition that they deserve.
Anyone who doesn't watch a TV series in the original language is doing a disservice to themselves. I could not watch Squid Game with the horrible English dubbing and not in Korean. Its like watching Money Heist not in Spanish.

I’ve been watching Korean series since 2001, Korean produced series are getting better and better. Their movies are marvelous as well, some of my favorites are The Classic, Oldboy, I Saw The Devil, Harmonium of My Heart, The Wailing, The Handmaiden, Mimic, Parasite and Hummingbird
Korean shows are FINALLY getting the recognition they deserve. They were already dominating Asian markets. The biggest reason it didn't carry over to the West was because people here were too lazy to read subtitles. How silly is that. Well now hopefully this show made people realize that non English shows are great. Korean shows aren't all melodramas either, as some ignorant folks here are trying to suggest. There are so many gems like Kingdom, KAIROS, My Mister (yes this one is not about romance, but about family and becoming an adult), Signal and many more. Check them out guys. Won't be disappointed.
I sincerely wish there’s no season 2. Korean dramas seldom do it, preferring to write originals all the time but I guess Netflix will put the pressure for a sequel. We may eventually destroy Korean creativity by just having them do season after season of the same thing.
Me when I first saw the trailer. "Nah, it's like Alice in Borderlands and another movie with killings" till I watch it and dang... it's so good! I loved the story, the acting, the decision that they need to make. I loved it!
The world is just starting to realize how _______ good the Korean TV and film industry is. Writing. Acting. Directing. Production. They just do a whole lot more for less money. And its not just certain types of work. They are good at so many different styles and genres of work. Why? Because it starts with the writing. The storytelling. I knew Squid Game would be a top hit on Netflix the second I saw the trailer. Japanese and Koreans simply understand the type of things that pique the human interest and keep you engaged while Hollywood still doesn't get it and is busy making boring superhero movies, slice of life comedy, or generic action movies that nobody cares about. Western movies and series invest way too much time and budget on graphics and action and never enough on storyline/storytelling, characters, suspense/anticipation, and emotional engagement. Watch any Korean drama and you'll see that Koreans are the absolute masters at this. It reminds me of when I saw the movie Captain Marvel. I remember how utterly bored I was because here's a character that's all of a sudden the strongest being in the universe decimating planets and spaceships, blasting laser beams and sh*t, and I just couldn't care less about any of it. Had no emotional investment in the character and couldn't wait for it to be over despite the impressive CGI and theatrics. Contrast that with the Korean series "Reply 1988" which is slow paced, has zero CGI, but takes you on a roller coaster of emotions and puts you in the shoes of the characters the entire time so that you begin to laugh when they laugh and cry when they cry. Sorry if this sounds rude, but Hollywood is just amateur in comparison.
Korean TV series is grounded on reality. Sure it is similar to Hunger Games meet Escape Room. But Hollywood properties are so geared on action that they forgot to do characterization.
I’m a native Korean speaker and just watched the show with English dubbing after watching the whole series in Korean. I highly recommend watching it with English subtitles. Definitely you miss something not hearing from the dialogue even if you don’t understand the language.

I don’t mind subtitles. I wish it was in Korean. The acting was so great to bring us into the edge and emotional roller coaster. Imagine if we could feel the voice of the characters. I bet it brings the whole new depth of emotion.

If you are interested in the main actor, Lee Jung Jae, I strongly recommend you to see the Korean movie filmed several years ago, The face reader. His image is somewhat clumsy and naive in Squid Game. But you gonna find a n absolutely different side of his face.
The theme of the show is universal. People who are in inequality are see themselves in the characters. Breaking boundaries works when themes are based on narrative and not forcing things just to appease a small group.

I would recommend Sweet Home. It is like a zombie apocalypse show but with strange monsters. Then there is this Japanese show Alice in Borderland, also a killing game genre. Though I feel that this Japanese drama might appeal to the younger crowd.
Although the idea of putting a group of people together and let them fight to death is not new (Battle Royale, Liar Game, Kaiji, Kakegurui, Hunger Game, just name a few), Squid Game's success is largely based on the relatable characters, great acting and interesting visual style.
the thing about translations is that it’s not so much about just straight up being able to get the point across through or that it’s not missing the plot but it’s more about understanding the depth of each characters, the lessons behind where they come from, their backgrounds, the reason behind their actions, how and why they act a certain way. People say that it’s just one line or two of mistranslation but you have to understand that these very translations make up for the entirety of the film itself, it’s more than just a glimpse to the director’s pov, being a foreigner myself and seeing my own native language (filipino) often translated inaccurately, I can definitely empathize with the people who felt rather dissatisfied with the translations.
I can relate when I read manga and watch anime, where the audio is one thing, but the subtitle is another. Where I know some Japanese words and vocabulary. It becomes annoying when I find some bad translation. It even becomes a diglossia situation on Pixiv, where I'm code-switching often, or I stumble upon Japanese artists. Where JP-> Translation is something I have to bypass, and learn more than a few words due to untranslatability in concepts. As an English has 1 form of thank you, but got to make politeness, Japanese has more forms with nuance. This barrier to entry is what causes interesting misreadings and hearings when I deal with sub title'd content. Same with Japanese songs where I know translation doesn't do any favors. お前はもう死んでいる。。。The intent / message is " You ( rude form ) are already dead ", but English doesn't have that formality, but if translated it literal would be dying instead. This is just the nuance in translation where two cultures / languages operate under some funny rules.
There are many korean action/drama series on Netflix that are worth to watch. Signal, the Voice, Stranger, and the Good Detective are a few that everyone should give a try.
Why do we have to put something down to appreciate something else? I'm Korean I think Squid Game is great but I loved watching the Avengers movies and there are a ton of great dramatic movies and shows in the US that I love as well. I feel like there can be great shows and stories from everywhere and every genres that exist simultaneously not alone.

What makes korean shows great in my opinion are
1. Top notch acting
2. Production on point
3. Creativity/unique
No fillers too. Their screenplays are fast-moving and filled with poignant points that will be relevant later in the story

Battle Royale? Escape Room? Alice in Borderland? I enjoyed them, but I've never thought a second about "What will I do or select in that situation?" It felt like just watching a show... no more / no less.
Squid Game is not famous because it's a death game. It's because it's a very RELATABLE Death game, unlike the series you mentioned.

Living in Vietnam I get a wide variety of movies and television shows on Netflix from all over the world. I watched Squid Game when it first came out and got sucked in right away. With all the viewing of shows and movies probably does stand out as one of the best and most original that I've seen on the platform. Great to see these amazing Asian actors on the show get the recognition that they deserve.
I believe still Squid game shows an humanism and that makes a difference from other death games.

Anyone who doesn't watch a TV series in the original language is doing a disservice to themselves. I could not watch Squid Game with the horrible English dubbing and not in Korean. Its like watching Money Heist not in Spanish.
For me the spanish latino was good for me and had lots of joy watching it, but that's just me it depends on the purpose not many of us like reading subtitles.
i cant speak/understand Korean and subtitles are a pain, i have to look down instead of viewing the awesome cinematography and acting. dubbed is fine.
Well when you watched with the English dub WITH English subtitles, you realize how terrible the subtitles are. I’m sorry but if you do not speak Korean, then you watched a whole different series.

I’ve been watching Korean series since 2001, Korean produced series are getting better and better. Their movies are marvelous as well, some of my favorites are The Classic, Oldboy, I Saw The Devil, Harmonium of My Heart, The Wailing, The Handmaiden, Mimic, Parasite and Hummingbird

In some situations it potentially cuts the audience in half, but perhaps some of the netflix audience is totally cool with it.

Korean shows are FINALLY getting the recognition they deserve. They were already dominating Asian markets. The biggest reason it didn't carry over to the West was because people here were too lazy to read subtitles. How silly is that. Well now hopefully this show made people realize that non English shows are great. Korean shows aren't all melodramas either, as some ignorant folks here are trying to suggest. There are so many gems like Kingdom, KAIROS, My Mister (yes this one is not about romance, but about family and becoming an adult), Signal and many more. Check them out guys. Won't be disappointed.

I sincerely wish there’s no season 2. Korean dramas seldom do it, preferring to write originals all the time but I guess Netflix will put the pressure for a sequel. We may eventually destroy Korean creativity by just having them do season after season of the same thing.
Me when I first saw the trailer. "Nah, it's like Alice in Borderlands and another movie with killings" till I watch it and dang... it's so good! I loved the story, the acting, the decision that they need to make. I loved it!
The world is just starting to realize how _______ good the Korean TV and film industry is. Writing. Acting. Directing. Production. They just do a whole lot more for less money. And its not just certain types of work. They are good at so many different styles and genres of work. Why? Because it starts with the writing. The storytelling. They know how to create great stories with depth and detail. And they create an amazing amount of good to excellent material. Far better than any other TV and film industry in the world.

I knew Squid Game would be a top hit on Netflix the second I saw the trailer. Japanese and Koreans simply understand the type of things that pique the human interest and keep you engaged while Hollywood still doesn't get it and is busy making boring superhero movies, slice of life comedy, or generic action movies that nobody cares about. Western movies and series invest way too much time and budget on graphics and action and never enough on storyline/storytelling, characters, suspense/anticipation, and emotional engagement. Watch any Korean drama and you'll see that Koreans are the absolute masters at this.
It reminds me of when I saw the movie Captain Marvel. I remember how utterly bored I was because here's a character that's all of a sudden the strongest being in the universe decimating planets and spaceships, blasting laser beams and sh*t, and I just couldn't care less about any of it. Had no emotional investment in the character and couldn't wait for it to be over despite the impressive CGI and theatrics. Contrast that with the Korean series "Reply 1988" which is slow paced, has zero CGI, but takes you on a roller coaster of emotions and puts you in the shoes of the characters the entire time so that you begin to laugh when they laugh and cry when they cry. Sorry if this sounds rude, but Hollywood is just amateur in comparison.

Korean TV series is grounded on reality. Sure it is similar to Hunger Games meet Escape Room. But Hollywood properties are so geared on action that they forgot to do characterization.

I’m a native Korean speaker and just watched the show with English dubbing after watching the whole series in Korean. I highly recommend watching it with English subtitles. Definitely you miss something not hearing from the dialogue even if you don’t understand the language.

I remember my first exposure to Korean entertainment when everyone was passing around My Sassy Girl. Amazing to see how it’s blown up.
If you are interested in the main actor, Lee Jung Jae, I strongly recommend you to see the Korean movie filmed several years ago, The face reader. His image is somewhat clumsy and naive in Squid Game. But you gonna find a n absolutely different side of his face.

I believe I have watched almost all of Korean must watch films.
The theme of the show is universal. People who are in inequality are see themselves in the characters. Breaking boundaries works when themes are based on narrative and not forcing things just to appease a small group.
I really need to indulge myself in more Korean media. At first I thought the French and Canadians were popping off in the Film/TV sector, but Korea has really shined through the last couple years with their worldwide successes.
Indeed Kdrama and K-pop and movies and Kfashion will only continue to grow worldwide including in USA markets.

The show was literally released *less a month* ago... it hasn't been out anywhere even near long enough for there to be any kind of claim like that... it's not like when some "underground" band suddenly goes "mainstream"/huge/gets a song on the radio/whatever & people can atleast reasonably make the (annoying, & half the time likely untrue) claim that " I liked them before they were cool", like the show has literally been out for 3 weeks ,tt people watchingt& popular since the day 1 it came out ....
I would recommend Sweet Home. It is like a zombie apocalypse show but with strange monsters. Then there is this Japanese show Alice in Borderland, also a killing game genre. Though I feel that this Japanese drama might appeal to the younger crowd.

Although the idea of putting a group of people together and let them fight to death is not new (Battle Royale, Liar Game, Kaiji, Kakegurui, Hunger Game, just name a few), Squid Game's success is largely based on the relatable characters, great acting and interesting visual style.

the thing about translations is that it’s not so much about just straight up being able to get the point across through or that it’s not missing the plot but it’s more about understanding the depth of each characters, the lessons behind where they come from, their backgrounds, the reason behind their actions, how and why they act a certain way. People say that it’s just one line or two of mistranslation but you have to understand that these very translations make up for the entirety of the film itself, it’s more than just a glimpse to the director’s pov, being a foreigner myself and seeing my own native language (filipino) often translated inaccurately, I can definitely empathize with the people who felt rather dissatisfied with the translations.
I can relate when I read manga and watch anime, where the audio is one thing, but the subtitle is another. Where I know some Japanese words and vocabulary. It becomes annoying when I find some bad translation. It even becomes a diglossia situation on Pixiv, where I'm code-switching often, or I stumble upon Japanese artists. Where JP-> Translation is something I have to bypass, and learn more than a few words due to untranslatability in concepts. As an English has 1 form of thank you, but got to make politeness, Japanese has more forms with nuance. This barrier to entry is what causes interesting misreadings and hearings when I deal with sub title'd content. Same with Japanese songs where I know translation doesn't do any favors. お前はもう死んでいる。。。The intent / message is " You ( rude form ) are already dead ", but English doesn't have that formality, but if translated it literal would be dying instead. This is just the nuance in translation where two cultures / languages operate under some funny rules.
There are many korean action/drama series on Netflix that are worth to watch. Signal, the Voice, Stranger, and the Good Detective are a few that everyone should give a try.

I'm Korean I think Squid Game is great but I loved watching the Avengers movies and there are a ton of great dramatic movies and shows in the US that I love as well. I feel like there can be great shows and stories from everywhere and every genres that exist simultaneously not alone.

If u like parasyte u will like squid game too.. coz the premise is almost the same in a sense how the poor is being taken advantage of by the rich.. i think that is also another reason why ppl are drawn to this drama.. it resonates with loads of us especially nowadays ppl are more aware of this social inequalities between the rich and the poor.. i think that was what made ppl like this drama.. not just about the game and death.. it's more than that..
