  • In this one I review the US Army arctic canteen, cup, and cover and do a little experiment using this system in hot weather.

    I was issued one in the Early 90's when I was at Ft. Drum in 10th Mountain Div. Don't remember much about it. Left it in my Duffel Bag mostly. We carried two one quart canteens on our LBE and one two quart canteen on our ALICE packs. We did use it in the field during the winter (COLD AF in the winter), and kept our "Normal" one quart canteen inside of our ECWCS jackets. It worked, I guess.

    I was issued a pair of these as an arctic infantry scout in the 1980s. I remember one time that the stopper came out during a patrol. I sloshed water all over the back of my leg, a very cold experience! Other than a stopper that doesn't screw tight, they worked pretty well. Water would start to freeze in sub zero Fahrenheit after several hours.

    I bought one of these at an army/navy surplus store a little over 20 years ago. Never knew it was an arctic canteen. Very cool. I have never used it. I've got the standard plastic 1 quart canteen/cup kit for use on hikes. Man I wish that surplus store was still there. Been gone for probably 15 years now.

      You saying that reminded me that I haven’t been to my local surplus store in a while. I’m gonna try and stop by there this week.
      The one thing I would change for this canteen is a wider fill neck. It doesn’t get cold enough here in Florida to freeze my canteen so I find this one useful to carry cool water during the summer. It’s hard to get a good amount of ice chunks inside with that narrow neck.
      Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    DSA100-72-C-1295 is the contract number on the canteen cover above the FSN. It shows a contract date of 1972.

    You are correct about the patches. They keep the handle from chewing through the pouch. I’ve got two of these from the 1950s. I’ve had them for years. They do exactly what they say they’ll do. Great video.

    Why don't you put that thing in the freezer for a few days to see if it does the job designed for-- for us northerners.

    Ha!!! You've got a canteen there I could never get in a month of Sundays!! That's a great example in great condition, the ones I've seen here are beat up and sold each part separately for too much money. I have a Finnish arctic canteen that's very well made but they don't have canteen cups (as far as I know), have a great vacation!!

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought the canteen new still in the box and unissued. The cup looks unissued too. Not sure about the cover. But it does have storage wear and corrosion on the snaps. Its a neat piece for my collection but I'm not yet sure if it will be used much. Too bad it's not available in good condition in your country. Thanks again for watching and for your comment!

      I have enjoyed your canteen cup cooking videos using your arctic cup. You have made some awesome stuff. You proved to me that the arctic cup is a great piece of gear even before I bought mine. I look forward to more in the future. Thanks for watching my video and taking the time to comment!

      Thanks for your service! How long did it take before it froze? I would hope it lasted at least 8 or 10 hours before it did. Thanks for your reply and for watching my video.

    Hi John on first read this comment will probably sound a little crazy, but, can you imagine the kind of canteen cup you would have got if one had been designed for the 2 quart bladder style canteen ? you could have cooked a big meal in that 👍👍👍 🤘 😁

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree! That would be a huge canteen cup! Enough food for maybe 4 people! Thanks for watching and commenting!

      I have been thinking of trying artic canteen cup fitting on 2qt canteen. Stick it on one corner and put in pouch. Didn't work out.
      People are putting USGI mess kit into artic cup.

    Nice going with the test. If you test again, rather than ice, how about putting it up against another canteen side by side and seeing how they compare in terms of temperature after a few hours?

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great idea. If I do the test again I will do that. I think that would be a good comparison. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    Nice review. So a quart of water weighs 2 pounds. How much does a regular GI canteen set up weigh empty. On hot days, I fill my water bottles 1/4-1/2 full of water and lay then in the freeze on the side over night. And then fill them up just before I head out. I also use old wool socks over them to help insulate. Also, if you wet the socks, the evaporation will help cool the canteen, which you probably already know

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My standard green US canteen weighs 5.3 oz empty and my 1944 US GI stainless canteens weighs 9.6 oz empty. That's not cups or covers mcluded. That's a big weight difference. I have never froze any of my canteens but that's an option for my plastic one. Thanks again for watching and for your comment!

    On ebay years back, one guy was selling group of 50 artic cups.
    Don't know why he couldn't sell in smaller groups, I might of bought some.

    it's funny how you're testing it in the Florida heat because it's first combat use was with US troops in the early 60's in the jungles of Veitnam ☺a cold drink can sometimes be worth it's weight in gold.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I read that about its service in Vietnam. Maybe its worth it in some instances. I think I would rather have the weight in gold. :) But I do think the canteen cup is cool. I look forward to using it in some cooking videos. Thanks for watching and for your comment!

    Used to have one but I got rid of it. It's too heavy so I got tired of carrying it.

  • @Perktube1
    @Perktube1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wonder why they made it so small. Was it the weight, or did a cold GI not need much water?
    Also there are ice trays that are made to freeze ice in small stick shapes to fit into small neck water bottles.

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure why they designed the kit to that size but one thing I can tell you is its pretty heavy when you fill it with water so maybe that’s the reason. Thanks for the tip on the ice cube trays. Thanks for watching my video!

    hello canteen MAN WHERE I COULD FIND THAT ?

  • @GeEked008
    @GeEked008 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought 5 of these for my family. One of them makes a rattling noise in that area where the two layers meet near the spout of the canteen. I don’t have any information on what that could be or how to possible fix it. Any ideas?

    • @John-Sherwood-W4JFS
      @John-Sherwood-W4JFS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      AvgJoe234 I would think by your description that the two layers have possibly separated at the neck area and it may be damaged. I would contact the seller and see if they will exchange it.

      You can still find them on eBay and some online military surplus stores. Good luck on your search if you decide to complete your kit.
