You don’t really mention how alfalfa is a much more high maintenance planting than clover is. Clover will grow about anywhere. Just look at your lawn sometime if you live in the north. Alfalfas are much needier in terms for soil types and condition.
From what I understand the alfalfa needs to be mowed more often than the clover likes. I really like the idea of planting those seeds side by side instead of mixed. That way you can mow each separately at different rates. I think I will try this.

It gets cold alfalfa goes brown, clover stays green. Plant a blend!
