Todor Georgiev your not alone mate the v10 is music to every car lovers ears it's such a great sound it turns even the strongest bike lover straight into a fast car lover
Man that wail of the 10 & 12 are absolutely amazing. Everyone that watched these cars race can consider themselves fortunate. Pity the people that will only have electric cars.
IMO the pre-1980's variety of engines was best: V8s, V12s, flat V12s, H16s etc etc etc. Yeah engine noise from the V10 engine era was great but it was also rather homogeneous ie al the same, back in the earlier days you had a wide variety of engine notes because they didn't have to stick to a single engine design. V10 is awesome but it'd be cool if they'd had V12s and V8s among the contenders as well. Why not allow the constructors the freedom to choose the engine architecture they like best. That's one of the problems of F1 the last 20-25 years: they all use the same basic engine lay--out, which kills ingenuity.
I don't think F1 ever sounded this bad. From the beginning, there were always great sounding engines. Even the 80's V6's had a charm to them. These V6's were a mistake from the start. The 15000 rev limit regulation was a massive mistake.
V10 Engine noise was by far the most iconic sounding for an F1 car 🏎 the sound the noise you would always know just by hearing that noise “oh that’s the V10 F1 days I remember that sound”
V10 is the best for me...my first F1 race experience was when they were racing V10s...I couldnt stop shaking from start to finish...it was unbelieveable!
This almost brings a tear to me eyes! I'll never forget my first visit to Indianapolis in 05. I stepped out of the car in one of the far back parking lots and heard that beautiful sound for the very first time during a practice run in real life and it was a damn near religious experience. Great memories. Went back in 06 and that was the year the teams pulled all of those running Good Year off the track after the pace lap. Or was it BF Goodrich? The race started with only half the field, and the fans were not happy. I remember turn 4 being littered with half empty Fosters cans.
Love the scream of a 3.0 v12 and that valvetrain noise and futuristic scream that is completely unique to v12 engines. V12 is my favorite. Also love the musical harmony that v10s sing in. The early 00s V10 is my second favorite.
When Im discussing F1 with work colleagues i always look around for the manager to be out of sight; then I think about greek tragedy theatre and I start yelling my lungs out.
As a fan, nothing will ever get close to the sound of a screaming V10, because that's the sound I grew up with. I was 10 years old when I attended the 2000 United States GP at Indianapolis, and I remember how my then 9 years old sister and I got the chills every time a car came out from the last banked turn, almost hitting the red line, shifting up to 7th gear as they entered the main straight. However, as an engineer, I must say that now I'm much more interested in the technology involved in the development of these new power units than in the sound itself. The 2014 power units are a masterpiece from an engineering point of view, really.
V6 turbo sounds like a joke compared to the rest. I mean shit, even the V8's sounded awesome. My favorite it the V10 but I'd rather settle for V8 than whatever the other crap is (v6 turbo yawn)
That V10 is what F1 is to me, the V8 doesn't sound bad and certainly not next to the shit we have to put up with at the moment. I tried to watch a race on TV today for the first time the year, but turned it off in disgust...
You obviously don't watch F1 for the right reasons then if all you care about is sound. This year's Bahrain race was some of the best racing I've seen in a long time. Who gives a F what they sound like if the racing is good. I'm tired of all these whiny comments by fly-by-night F1 "fans" complaining about the new sound.
JonnyFlash80 You do have a reasonable argument, but the reality is that the majority of the fans that tune into F1 are "fly-by-night" fans. Thats the type of demographic that Bernie Ecclestone has been trying to attract for the last 25 years and has done so VERY successfully. It's good to be a true fan of formula 1 whether the sound sucks or not. but its not bad either to complain about it when it is one of the elements that brings in fans in the first pace.
I've been a "fly-by-nighter" for over 30 years then! Even the old 1.5 litre turbo V6s sound infinitely better than todays garbage...which sound almost exactly like a CF Moto 650 (a water-cooled V twin) motorcycle. Do you watch a movie with the sound muted? Of course not! The sound is part of the spectacle. It contributes to the atmosphere. Three agendas that have spoiled F1 for many: the Greenwash (many new failure points, too many inter-dependencies), racing at difficult times of day, in faraway places with extreme weather, and the continual crippling of ultimate performance in the name of closer racing. Why not just have Dallara (or maybe resurrect Lola) make a control chassis and body with adjustments only? Identical steering linkages for Monaco. Make it a competition between engine companies and drivers. Take the aero and chassis out of the equation. So sick of seeing teams exploit loopholes in the regs and winglets/canards/cuts and scoops popping up every few years!
Paul Azadian Another thing! What about that other justification for constant goalpost shifting? That of "keeping costs down"? The investment in developing F1 2014 must have been huge. Okay, so it was shared among the teams who contributed specific sub-systems, but still. And for what? To cynically reflect driving preferences of the general public? Hybrids in F1 -- and Jesus wept. Honestly folks, even Formula-E sounds better.
These sounds are what made F1 memorable, thrilling to watch and interesting to people that didn't even support the sport. Now-a-days, sure the cars have become a lot faster, but that crazy engine noise has gone, which is my opinion, has taken away much of the excitement of the sport
sameee i do it in school when i pass all my car friends and be goin “vvvvvvtvvvvvvvvvtvvvvv” (that’s the best i could explain the sound) and then on deceleration i do pops and crackles
Not sure why everyone hates the V6 turbo. Senna's McLaren MP4-4 had a V6 turbo. I can understand if its just preference (I'm a V12 guy), but its not like V6 turbos are shit.
The V6 turbos back then made a lot more power and a lot more noise. That's the major difference. Senna's car had an engine that reved 2k less than the current limit, but it still sounded a lot meaner. The engines of today is very efficient, and it takes energy to make sound, and today way less energy is spent making heat and sound, hence why the sound of the old turbos and the current turbos are so different.
peter pansen I believe in the 80s or 70s they used V6 turbos and they produced over 1000hp. The v6 is extremely capable of being loud and insanely fast, it's just that everything is limited because they want to be fuel efficient.
Yep the V10 does if for me. This is the best fun in ages. Forget soppy songs! I think it is when they brake into a corner and know exactly when to the turn the pressure on. So brave and bold. Engine responds and the driver is in control again. With the engine Thanks so much.
To avoid the death of the sport, they should bring the high pitch scream back to F1, its not the same without it. Studies have shown that people watching f1 has dropped by 30+%. They should just do what the fans want, BRING BACK THE V10. V12 and V8 are good too.
This year's V6 is much more silent as they convert the sound/energy from the turbo waste into electrical energy and store it into the batteries. It sounds like 40kmh when they are taking a fast corner at 120kmh this year. Current engine + tyres = Boring. If the sport continues that way, I might stop watching them after 14 years of following. So sad.
@William Borland I'm sure they are much more efficient, but I don't care about that. The cars may be safer now, but I'm not sure about high voltage systems being safe for marshals etc. And most importantly, the V6 hybrid power units sound absolutely shite.
