    Hi Joe, was hoping to get some advice from you on heating an insulated Eskimo 949i with a mr buddy propane heater. I live in Dover Foxcroft but will be using the pop up as a camping tent just above Moosehead week of 13NOV2022. How much propane do you go through in a night? I know it’s all relative to the temp but I shouldn’t be dealing with anything near like during ice fishing. Only plan to run the heater at night and probably on low. I have a 30LB tank from a camper that I am hoping will be enough, thoughts????

    • @JoeHollandFishing
      @JoeHollandFishing  ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t use a lot of propane or heat. My cold tolerance is super high so I basically take the chill off in the morning and night and shut it down at night while sleeping most nights.on a super cold night I might leave it on low most of the night. A 20lber will last a week for me, on the coldest of trips like when it was -40+ f a tank lasted over 3 days . Hope that helps. Good luck on the trip.

    How did you keep bait alive and unfrozen for 7 days?

    • @JoeHollandFishing
      @JoeHollandFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s actually a challenge especially with those low temps and an uninsulated bucket. I changed the water a lot and kept a battery aerator going and chipped out the ice as much as possible. I also took the bucket in the tent at night , not that it did a lot but every bit helps.

    Blows my mind that you didn't keep one of those lakers to eat.

    • @JoeHollandFishing
      @JoeHollandFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly I brought up too much food, moose and deer meat, and had whitefish and brook trout too. I do like lake trout and have nothing against testing them but I didn’t want to be wasteful. Next trip might be moosehead and I’ll eat some there.

    • @rubbnsmoke
      @rubbnsmoke 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JoeHollandFishing And I noticed you were having a problem with fish freezing when you did keep them...Solution: if you pack them in a heap of snow it insulates them from the surrounding air and keeps them from freezing up solid. I still would've kept at least one of those lakers though. Take that sucker home and smoke it.

    • @JoeHollandFishing
      @JoeHollandFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good call thank you. How is smoked sucker, what does it compare to.?

    • @rubbnsmoke
      @rubbnsmoke 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeHollandFishing To be totally honest...Smoked sucker is good, kind of like whitefish when smoked, but has LOTS of bones. Best off to can them. Bones basically dissolve during the canning process. But when I said "Take that sucker home and smoke it", I was referring to one of the Lake Trout. But canned sucker is actually really good. 1/8 teaspoon liquid smoke, 1/2 Teaspoon canning salt in each pint jar before processing and it's delicious. Some folks add 1 TBS ketchup and 1/2 tsp canning salt in each pint. I've had it that way and it's really good too. And to be honest, if I didn't take the lakers home and smoke them, I'd be canning them. Shelf stable and an easy lunch. Just open a jar and make an easy trout salad sandwich. Or just east it out of the jar with some good bread or crackers. I've even had some "sweet and sour" canned sucker before that was incredible.
