- Camrose Vintage Working Day 2010. The "Nuffield" show in the ring comprised of all three, Nuffield, Leyland and Marshall and very comprehensive it was. A Nuffield Universal was the first tractor I ever drove. Also included is some small baling, bale loading (New Holland Baler and International tractor) an MF 35 with another exhibit and an amazing phonograph playing music from a cylinder.

That was a fancy hay timing rig! Last time I did hay time (1977 ish) I was stood on a sledge drawn with a chain behind the baler. It was split in 2 like a pair of skis, hinged at the drawing end on a strong steel tube. It rode nicely over the field You stacked 4 course of 3, 5 course if it was very very dry and light. Had to make sure the 1st one was across at the front.Then when you had your 12 or 15, whipped out a pointed steel bar that was stored in a tube at the front, and stuck it firm into the ground between the 2 skis, and held it right there until all the bales came off in a neat stack. Repeat all day until the lot was finished. Then they were led in. It worked fine. The baler was nasty though, if the fly wheel bolt went it would take 2 minutes or so to slow and stop. That would be if we hit a thick damp spot under a tree or something, too dense BANG it would go off like a pistol. LOL I was s##t scared to put my hands in to get the loose out in case it decided to start slicing again...Happy days, worked hard, got very well treated and well paid. In fact the farmer I worked for (Stan Richardson near Stainton army camps) has turned out to be the best boss I ever had (58 this year)
When I did it (60s) the sledge was one and the back half tipped. Stacked right, it tipped without a problem but too far forward and it was a cow! Stack 'em too high and the top ones fell off so you jump off, re-stack and then run like heck to catch up the outfit!

Thanks Wayne. I remember them, too, but they were slow compared to throwing them up by hand! The Nuffield was built by Austin/Morris and named after the village where the owner started his business mending bikes! Leyland and Marshall reflect different owners subsequently. They went out of business about 20 years ago.

The great thing we oldies remember about the Nuffield Universal was the adjustable axle. The wheel slid in and out on a long axle which projected 6" beyond the wheels. Easy to take out a tractor shed pillar or strut! . . . . Alan

Nice one Alan. Wild to think that Nuffield and jf was big stuff in its day. Its like when my dad bought his ford 2000, a nieghbour comented that he must be going to start contracting. Big changes!

I have not seen a side bale loader like that since the late 40's early 1950's
one of my jobs was lining up the bales in the field just for that action.
Don't remember seeing a Marshall or a Nufield tractor before
Awesome tractors driven a few leylands the 272 and the 285. My best mate in school who lived on a farm had leylands and nuffields they had a nuffield 10/60 they converted it to a six cylinder which they put on the harvester..
Great vintage tractor video, 5* The Nuffield tractors look a lot like a old Allis Chalmers WC & WD tractors even in paint color..

Times certainly change! We used to do silaging with a 40" Lundell drawn by a 35 (flat out) . . . Alan
I remember when Leylands changed their colour scheme from the two shades of blue to "Harvest Gold" ( I think they called it ) and black . One farming magazine journalist at the time rather waspishly referred to the shade as "Looking more like calf scour yellow than gold".
I used to know a guy who worked for a tractor agency that sold both Renault and Marshall tractors. When I asked him what he thought to the Marshall tractor he said "They paint the engines and transmissions black to hide all the bloody oil leaks!"

@balmesh Put my hands up . Looks like I am wrong about the front . When I say not original i meant not the right one , but it is the right one all be it not the right colour . Despite being a big time Nuffield / Leyland Marshall fan never have I noticed that the lower part of the grill is a different to the upper part . So what I said was wrong thus making me feel a right prat . Though unless some were made like that then it should be black or so all the ones I've seen are .

@balmesh Can't say that i do but then don't get me wrong , I am not knocking what it looks like . Nothing wrong in that department . What happened to the orginal , did it just rust out over the years ?
I see that Marshall 100 / 4 has a restyled front , or certainly the lower half is .
Marshall 100 are very strong tractors
