Without him, we wouldn’t have had “New Kid in Town” or “Heartache Tonight” by The Eagles. Linda Ronstadt learned to sing “Blue Bayou” from JD Souther in 1976, which she recorded and took to #3 in 1977. He and Linda were close friends and collaborators. He was also close to Jackson Browne, who sang backup on “You’re Only Lonely.”

@@timothysexton3657 You're right. Souther wrote for & co-wrote songs with the Eagles, including "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight", "New Kid in Town", "How Long", "Best of My Love", "James Dean", "New Kid In Town", "Doolin-Dalton" among others. He helped the Eagles form as a backup band for Linda Ronstadt before they split off as their own group. They even asked Souther to join their group (Could you imagine?), but he declined, saying that the Eagles "already had all the talent they needed". Souther was one of the most low profile, highly talented performing artists in rock, having played with many of the finest, most famous musicians known.

Tom, my brother Bob told me age is just a number and the speed limits are just suggestions. He introduced me to good music when I was 6 and he was 15. He would have turned 77 this coming March. Rock on!
Was 19 1/2 when i recorded this song Dec.79 on a big Ghettoblaster in an intercitytrain near Hamburg on route back home, few hours earlier i had completed my military base training (Green Navy/marinestyle), after i heard it it was my favorite song, sadly i lent the tape months later to a comrade and never get it back, heard it only once since then in mid 80. 2 years ago i found it here on YT when i heard it first time after nearly 40 years i was so happy and every time i hear it i feel the same Happiness/have the same feelings like back then when i was 19/20. Stay healthy, happy and inside young folks.
You are right. There are no real writers now. This song is about so much: loneliness, tenderness, the stuff we sometimes do to assuage loneliness. We are talking real, human, sometimes difficult human emotion. Now we do crap (sorry rap)
@gregorythompson1009 • Thank you Gregory , for ur comment..I was actually looking for the " right one " to reply to , after hearing the dreadful news this morning. And while they all played a vital and important part , none more so , than J.D. did himself. At one point when they all converge in Cali , they do so , coming from all over the U.S. . Jackson Browne , being the lone true Southern Californian among the group. But while they were trying out for a house gig , J.D. reluctantly tried out for the band...and while the band as a whole sounded good , it was plain to everyone ( himself included ) , that he wasn't needed. They were all gonna write together anyway, so it was still a " win - win " for everyone concerned. But I tell you now , you will never find a more clearer, distinct, pure and richer voice that any singer ever had, than J.D. Souther...just by listening to this song , you can clearly tell in not only the lyrics, but in the style, pitch of his voice, and overall sound , of just how much influence he has had and still continues to have, on the Eagles..I've ALWAYS loved his high rich voice..some of the best vibrato to me, I've ever heard..I also remember very well when this song first hit the airwaves.. my wife and I , had just welcomed our first son into this world , making us proud parents for the first time... part of the better days AND YESTERYEARS, gone by.. so sadly 😥 missed , I might add.......remember everyone, these comments and opinions are solely mine and mine alone. They are made IMHO...many blessings to you 🙏 all..stay safe 🙏 and tc everyone...hagd 😊😊
What some folks do not realise is that the songs and lyrics of JD Souther will be still around in 500 to 1,000 years and more🎉🎉🎉 RIP JD thanks for the music👍👍👍
I don't know either how people can not love this song... It really is one of the most beautiful songs on YT.... The lyrics to this song makes me cry... Not thumb this song down... I am wondering what kind of songs are they into...I just can't imagine...
They don't like music, Cynthia: they prefer chanting, mantra, songs for stupid people; -OR- they've never lost a love, never longed for long, never been sentimental or empathic. Like you, I can't imagine being that lost.
You now that you are right Cynthia I just had time to read all of the posts to this song I am really lonely now that my wife of 31 years is gone. I do have three wonderful a great kids and three grandchildren My wife died on Mothers day 2017 and My Father two days after. talking about Lonely the people in this world now I can't really understand really selfish I'm glad but I saw your post thank you God bless you
Charles I am very sorry for your losses. I lost my eldest sister and much-loved aunt within days of one another and mum 10 months later and that was bad enough. To lose your beloved wife of 31 years and then your father 2 days later is grief piled upon grief so I can understand your loneliness. Modern society is weird. We seem to be too busy staring at phones to reach out to one another but I am sure there are people out there who really wish you well.
I only recently found this song, and it has been on repeat for about the last week or so. One of my new favorites. I am a big Eagles fan but only just recently dove into JD Souther's songwriting, which is absolutely phenomenal. I was listening to his music today and thinking about how I could manage to get a ticket to one of his concerts near me in November when I read that he had passed away earlier today. RIP JD and may your songs live on forever!
JD Southern is way more important to the power of 70's, or Classic Rock, than most people realize. Great writer, and obviously, he sang well enough to touch yer heart!
He lived in the same apartment building as the Eagles before they made it big. Ho co wrote several of their sons and later produced some of their albums.
This song caught my attention as a kid and it really struck a chord with me as I got older. Now, it's a masterpiece of songwriting and sound I'll continue to cherish. Rest In Peace J.D. Souther, may your memory and your music be a blessing to all 🙏
Building somewhat upon the previous comment, I'm 81 now, and I agree with the comment. I recalled the song alright but couldn't have named the year of popularity, it truly was the age of truly great music! My memory is now fading some and I couldn't have told you the year it was released! Like the others below, I miss those times but being a born-again Christian, I'm looking forward to much better times in my future! God Bless y'all! d.o'd.
So sad to hear of J.D. Southers passing. This man was a giant in the music industry .He is respected by all who were in the business. His music takes me to the best years of my life. Thank you J.D. for giving me something to hold on to in my youth.
How can I order a CD with only the lonely on it??????? Please. I have looked for this song for almost 40 years.... Please somebody help me. I will. Keep trying...
Listening once again on a Rainy Friday night April 19, 2024,,, I think some of the members of the Eagles are singing harmony on this-- awesome, he wrote a lot of songs for them!--sing on JD, still lovin’ it!❤️🌹
You know, it's so crazy . . . I'd forgotten all about this song until I ran across it in a Billboard top 100 playlist here on YT, and I've listened to it about ten times in the last 24 hours. Part of the soundtrack of my childhood that I'm glad to have recovered. So beautiful. Both his voice and the lyrics. Just before that, I'd watched Black and White night for about the 100th time, because Roy Orbison, no other reason needed. I remarked to myself how reminiscent JD Souther's sound was to Roy's. It's no wonder: I just looked him up, and Roy Orbison was his idol. I also need to go back and look for him in Black and White Night, because apparently he was both on stage, and one of the producers of the show.
Orbison and Souther knew each other and fellow Texans, Souther idolized Orbison and learned to sing like him, a feat that can only be done by few. J.D.Souther could hold a note like Roy
Best music ever. I remember the early years of the Eagles, I would hunt through the records looking for songs with J.D. Souther songwriting credits. Had no idea who he was or where he came from, and could never work out why he wasn't in the band. RIP J.D. Souther, legend.

I'm 72 , I never forget classics, you know Mozart would have loved this he loved sweet songs and emotional music , he never heard any of the classics the 20th century gave us, he would love it, and hell didn't we get spoiled !
Don and Glenn did collaborate on the writing of "New Kid in Town" But I think that song screams J D Souther and is my number 1 favorite song by the Eagles.
One of the few times I agree with the term underrated. You are absolutely correct what an exceptional artist JD is!
It's a good song definitely ripped off Orbison
This song sounded great 40 years ago and still sounds great today. Thank you JD.
Indeed! Well put!

It's December 16, 2020 - I standing in the shower and this great song comes into my old mind....I think I'm still OK at 74. Thank J. D Souther.
Me too Tom. I'm 66 and still listening to our great music.
Tom. 60 and right with you guys!
Grew up in Africa and my late dad played this in the early nineties. I am now 39 and this brings me great memories.
R.I.P. JD Souther. One of my favorite songs. Extraordinary talent.
This is one of my all-time favorites. Mr. Souther's vocals, the backup singers, the piano & instruments, everything is perfect.
Nice to meet you Suzanne The melancholy piano makes me cry🎹💦Greetings from Tokyo
Agreed!
❤Agreed!
yes true
Every single dam thing about this song ES PERFECTO!!!!
We will never have music like this ever again...
You got that right.
Fact#
You are right. There are no real writers now. This song is about so much: loneliness, tenderness, the stuff we sometimes do to assuage loneliness. We are talking real, human, sometimes difficult human emotion. Now we do crap (sorry rap)
You are so right, nice and mellow.
Sadly true
Nearly 68 years old and this song just never gets old. A timeless classic with a great piano in there.
I know that piano, gives me chills!

I'm here listening. 2-28-23 reliving memories, thanks for the company.
Same here. If he hadn’t been true to himself, he would have been part of the Eagles. He and Glen Frey were roommates.
SORRY .
lot of you children do NOT understand if not for JD SOUTHER AND JACKSON BROWNE THE EAGLES WOULD NOT BEEN ABLE TO FLY SO HIGH.
I'm so glad that he kept this one for himself.

Had to come and listen to this again after hearing the sad news. Such a beautiful song.

What some folks do not realise is that the songs and lyrics of JD Souther will be still around in 500 to 1,000 years and more🎉🎉🎉
RIP JD thanks for the music👍👍👍
God bless you Charles. I hope the love that you shared with your wife and father will pull you through the toughest times.
Love this song too, I added it to my playlist Romantic :-)
I only recently found this song, and it has been on repeat for about the last week or so. One of my new favorites. I am a big Eagles fan but only just recently dove into JD Souther's songwriting, which is absolutely phenomenal. I was listening to his music today and thinking about how I could manage to get a ticket to one of his concerts near me in November when I read that he had passed away earlier today. RIP JD and may your songs live on forever!
Nobody writes a better heartbreak song than JD Souther. And his voice is beautiful.

Rest in Peace, J. D. Souther. Loved your music for decades. Now you and Glenn Frey are back together. Heaven is rocking tonight!
JD Southern is way more important to the power of 70's, or Classic Rock, than most people realize. Great writer, and obviously, he sang well enough to touch yer heart!
He's one of those guys who wrote more songs than people realize, because everybody covered them.
@@catbird-dq7ri what all songs did he write besides this one
He lived in the same apartment building as the Eagles before they made it big.
Ho co wrote several of their sons and later produced some of their albums.

Building somewhat upon the previous comment, I'm 81 now, and I agree with the comment. I recalled the song alright but couldn't have named the year of popularity, it truly was the age of truly great music! My memory is now fading some and I couldn't have told you the year it was released! Could've been a Roy Orbison song!!! BEAUTIFUL!
It was a definite nod to Roy Orbison. :)
Wow - can just imagine Orbison singing this song!!!
So true!!! Oh course, he did do, "Only the Lonely".
