Nowadays, people who rip on the Police Academy movies forget what they were all about in the first place: just because someone doesn't match up to other people's standards doesn't mean they can't be a hero.
People rip on these movies now? I’m such an 80s kid I guess. These weren’t about having a Christopher Nolan type film. IT was about fun and escape . A reason to laugh for hours without apology. Fuck critics we all have an opinion and none of them mean anything to anyone other than ourselves. I for one am so grateful to have grown up during this time period. It really was the best . We weren’t talking about remakes for a reason.
Mahoney: ^to Lassard^ 😳 Lassard: 😏 You didn't think I made "commandant," without pulling the kind of prank you pulled on me, did you? It's the oldest trick in the book.
Police Academy had all aspects of a perfect 80s comedy: great story, underdog wins, ability to tell a story in under 3 hours and its own song. The other ones had their moments but this was something new and fun. Great movie.
The first Police Academy was the BEST one! The look on Mahoney's face was PRICELESS after Lassard got him back! Makes you wonder whether the commandant was schooling the rookie on what HE was like when he was younger? R.I.P. George Gaynes.....there are MANY, MANY things you can teach the angels!
+Travis Owens He was probably thinking "Who do you think invented all the pranks you did?" As Lassard would say "There are many, many reasons why I am Commandant. This is one of them"
This pops up again in 3 when the hooker shows up at the Ball and the Chief asks "Who the hell is that?" to which Lassard replies "Oh, just an... Old, old friend"
In the 80s and 90s movies were so inspirational like this song say " I want to be some body" they made you feel you could do anything. Now all we have are dark movies with the main characters as Hitmen that kill people, yeah what great role model characters for movies. There are no movies around now that make you think yes I want to do that I want to make a difference, everything is just dark and empty, with no desire to do anything.
Chief that because today movies tend to reflect a lot of foul that that is happening in the real world I love a lot of superheroe movies thah were made and a few of one good cop movies until a person like me has a run with a real cop and gets treated like a shit on more than one occasion Now with that being said people realize this world has lat less sunshine and puppies and more wolves and dark skies
If I was given a month to live, this would be a film I'd watch before I went. So many memories. Watched this film practically everyday with my best mate. Good times and at the time, I never knew what the booth scene was really all about! I was only 10. LOL
AlphaOscarRomeo Jack is that you? My buddy and me used to watch this all the time during the summers. We were like 10 or 11. We broke things up by watching Teen Wolf. Great times. Alpha Mike Foxtrot!!!
I hate to be the one that goes there, but I do love the message of the imagery that is showed as the credits rolled. All the VIP's rising and saluting was like saying to this group "congrats, you made it, your part of the club". I always get a charge when Callahan yells eyes right, and seeing the group do it. There is so much there, guys, girls, tall short, different colors, its great when the club gets more diverse. Great job on the actors all willing to do it, and I loved how they all brought something to the scene whether they meant to or not. Hooks looked like "see i can do it", Hightower is like "wow, I made it", tackleberry like "yup, this is what I was supposed to be doing", mahoney like "cool dude".
Yup! Marching very well, in-time, and with pride!! The clown, the debutante, and the player(wearing hat within regulation but still a little extra something). They are going to be somebody! I feel you and feel it!
@Robert Lopresti nope. When there were movie rental stores, I'd rent movies like this (R-rated), and when they'd initially refuse to let me rent it because it was rated R, I told them to look up the membership info on my mother and it said, "My kids have permission to rent out R-rated movies," and I'd take'em home 😊.
I had forgotten how R-rated it was and showed my boys the movie a few years ago. 😂😂😂 It went fine and we all enjoyed the movie, but I was like, "I forgot about some of those scenes!" 🤣

Saw movie in the theatre when I was 12. Might have been silly, looking back now, but overall it was lots of fun. The central theme of misfits and underdogs becoming heroes, encapsulated by the song, is quite strong and gave the film its charm.
LOL Harris really looks thrilled after the salute and fade away...... Well, he won't have to worry about dealing with his new recruits until Police Academy 4!
The subsequent films turned Harris into a buffoon, but I like how in this one he's still fairly competent, and the jokes are at the expense of the entire cast, and not just him. In fact, the last few jokes are at Mahoney and Fachler's expense (including a callback to a joke at Lassard's expense), and Harris is pretty much the straight guy/audience POV character at the end, sighing at what a bunch of misfits he's ended up with.
I really like this movie and the song "I'm Gonna Be Somebody." As many many many of us remember, at Lou's Cafe in Back To The Future, Goldie Wilson was motivating George McFly to standing up for himself by telling him he wasn't going to spend the rest of his life at that cafe, and that he's going to do night school and one day he'd be somebody. Marty brought in that he'd become mayor of Hill Valley. Goldie says he'll clean up Hill Valley as Mayor Goldie Wilson. "I like the sound of that." Me? I'm gonna be somebody one day, too. I'm going to become a private detective and open up my own detective agency. "Private Detective Sam Harris." I like the sound of that.
This song is an inspiration. My dad and some of my cousins said I couldn’t get my CDL license and didn’t want me to be trucker. Hey proved my family wrong took me 4 tries and finally made it. If you have a strong desire for something in life you will do what it takes!
I remember being a kid in the 80s, I'd watch this movie at my granny's house. If only I could go back in time and tell that kid to not worry so much and that everything would be ok.
I worked that Mahoney's address into a speech I held in front of the parents on graduation day couple of years back. I was a teacher at the time, still am.
1984 and 1985, great years for cinema and comedy movies just think we had ramis, akroyd, hughes, Zemeckis writing or just finishing writing screenplays that we will become to love

Welcome to the club. I gag the makings of a great police officer there ever would’ve been, but I never got to be because of some “certain people” I trusted. They weren’t police officers, but I did trust them and they let me down. I know what happened and how. Heck, even the police and the military were and are in my family history and legacy. Note, it’s up to me to prepare it ahead for the next generation as a continuance in the family legacy and tradition and history. It’s what our ancestors would’ve wanted. Even my mother (God rest her soul) would’ve wanted it that way.
This film still holds a candle for me i loved every one of them god its emotional i nwver get bored watching it and laughs too its always fab to watch this end clip of the song when at times i feel worse this song just makes me fab again❤❤

Lyrics:
I was ready, I was willing
But I never ever got the chance
Wasn't moving, only losing
And the time was slippin' through my hands
I took one step up, put my foot on the gas
Got me out of nowhere fast
I'm Gonna be Somebody
I'm gonna make my stand
I'm gonna be Somebody
I really think I can
For the first time from the inside to the outside
Something feels right
If I can't be anybody but me I might as well be somebody
When your hurtin' disconcerted
Nothing gonna come your way
There's no reason to be bleedin
You can change your life from night to day
When your timings right there'll be hope in sight
Just believe in what your saying when you say
I'm Gonna be Somebody
I'm gonna make my stand
I'm gonna be Somebody
I really think I can
For the first time from the inside to the outside
Something feels right
If I can't be anybody but me I might as well be somebody
I'm Gonna be Somebody
I'm gonna make my stand
I'm gonna be Somebody
I really think I can
For the first time from the inside to the outside

Welcome to the club. I gag the makings of a great police officer there ever would’ve been, but I never got to be because of some “certain people” I trusted. They weren’t police officers, but I did trust them and they let me down. I know what happened and how. Heck, even the police and the military were and are in my family history and legacy. Note, it’s up to me to prepare it ahead for the next generation as a continuance in the family legacy and tradition and history. It’s what our ancestors would’ve wanted. Even my mother (God rest her soul) would’ve wanted it that way.
Brilliant ending to one of my favourite films. I like all the police academy movies.....probably could have lived without 6 and 7 though 🤣
