Legion Kratos: design masterpiece

  • The Legion Kratos is the newest kit in the Legiones Astartes range of the Age of Darkness Horus Heresy universe.
    And yet it is the oldest of the Space Marine legion tanks within the setting, and this contradiction in lore age to actual age led me to explore how well the designers captured this idea. Please join me in this video to find out what I discovered along with a surprise about the Kratos' design.

      I wonder if there's a tactical advantage to it, since obviously artillery tanks won't be required to move much if at all when in use, but firing behind them could be an advantage when they're required to withdraw as they can just drive away at speed rather than have to turn around first.

      Thank you!
      For the accelerator cannon barrels I used the same approach as I did on the Sicaran and Deredeo dreadnought autocannon barrels - have a search through my how-to and modelling playlist for these demo videos. Obviously, a larger drill bit was required, I used an 8mm metal drill bit and a cordless drill on its slowest setting. Hope this helps 🙂

    I'll be getting one, still undecided whats the best weapon loadout for it.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is very cool looking and as I briefly mentioned, goes together really well.
      Loadout is quite tricky given it doesn't have power of the machine spirit and is a standard vehicle.
      All lascannons is an easy choice with melta or cannon main gun. While I magnetised the turret guns and barbettes, I've used cannon, autocannons and volkite culverins successfully.
      This allows me to split the main gun and autocannons at one target e.g. tanks and the culverins at another using the defensive weapons split fire rule.

    Really great look at the Kratos. It takes true skill to design and engineer a tank that in-universe was the precursor to so many other existing tanks, some of which have been on sale for decades.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's very kind of you to say so, and agreed 100% - this is a very cleverly designed vehicle and a lot of care and attention went into crafting it's place in the heresy universe.

  • @MagosMirka
    @MagosMirka ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The only thing I'm a bit disappointed with on the Kratos is that they didn't put the little ladder on it you can see on all the other vehicles.
    Then again that might be a quality of life addition all the vehicles after the Kratos got 😆 still would be a visually pleasing addition

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's a good reason it didn't get the ladder - not possible to mould in plastic without a huge amount of extra kit pieces.
      As is often the case in life, there are no free lunches when it comes to model medium - resin and plastic both have certain unique benefits.

    • @MagosMirka
      @MagosMirka ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leakycheese I don't have the model, but looking at the sprue pieces on GWs website the side armor of the tank is already on a 90° angle to the sprue, so adding the ladder in the way it is done on other tanks shouldn't have been a problem even with plastic injection. No undercuts there

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a good point actually, looking again the vents are similar style features on the side panels from a moulding perspective.
      Taking another look at the Fellblade and Sabre (the only other vehicles to have the ladder - it's not present on Sicarans, Scorpius, Arquitor or MKIIB Land Raider). I know think a more likely explanation is that there simply isn't space to fit the ladder on the Kratos.

  • @sonicwingnut
    @sonicwingnut ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Had one of these since not long after release as my girlfriend's brother bought me one for my birthday. It is a fantastic tank kit although would be nice to have an easy push fit or magnetization option for the giant blades on the front. Just a shame they promoted them as also being 40K compatible then promptly kicked them into legends as soon as 10th dropped.

  • @racerguy180
    @racerguy180 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Cheers Racer, I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
      New MKIIIs and Deredeo are the next things due for plastic release any time now, although I suspect these might been delayed by the warehouse transfer to Castle Donington (like Legions Imperialis has).
      Hopefully not too long now!

    @sonicwingnut ปีที่แล้ว +2

    One interesting thing looking at a lot of the tanks designs after also watching your Dreadnought retrospective is certain elements like the smokestacks on the back of lots of tanks are directly modelled on the ones on the back of the original metal box dread.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good spot - the distinctive exhaust stack design of Imperial vehicles traces origins back to the RTB04 Rhino exhausts. As you correctly observed, this was first realised in the modern format in Jes Goodwin's Space Marine Dreadnought aka Castraferrum aka the Boxnaught. 40K is full of lovely little bits like this!

    An excellent rundown of where the components & inspirations are integrated into the kit & the line as a whole, these are my favorite types of Leakycheese vids. Also the Glaive may be my favorite of the Legion superheavies but the Fellblade turret with its dual hatches is a real work of art. Looks like it would be a real joy to assemble, weather & detail up a-la Nightshift or Panzermeister with some military scale modeling techniques.

    I do like all the design nods to older sculpts in the Kratos. It has a bit of a cluttered look (not to the extent of some of the Primaris stuff though) that I don't like as much, but it does make sense that it's not as refined as the newer versions.
    The only thing that really bugs me is that the designer apparently added the two dozer blade mounting lugs (the slots on either side of that frontal grille section you mentioned at 12:56) from a reference without realising what they were meant to be, going by how the actual dozer blade in the kit connects underneath them. I guess you can headcanon it away as different dozer blade patterns, but still, hah.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps we could look at the cluttered look as a nod to it being a primitive, less evolved design - say like the Vickers A1E1 Independent, T28/T35 or Neubaufahrzeug?
      As to the "mounts" on the front hull... well who knows what they are? The kit comes with a dozer blade that mounts further down the hull. We really don't know... maybe they are mounts for a different design of attachment not supplied in the kit, or perhaps they are magnetic attachment points for towing?

  • @anotherzingbo
    @anotherzingbo ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I remember when I first saw a picture BMP-T I thought that it was the most 40k-like real world AFV I'd ever seen. IIRC the reason it has twin autocannons in its turret is because one is loaded with armour piercing rounds for use against armoured vehicles and the other is loadedwith high explosive rounds for use against infantry. I think that generally it's quite unusual to see twin weapon turrets like that in the real world except on anti-aircraft vehicles where rate/volume of fire is important. On main battle tanks it looks like it's always better to fit as large a gun as possible rather than two smaller guns.

    • @leakycheese
      @leakycheese  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Don't take my observation too literally in terms of trying to frame it in a modern day context. In 2023, tanks are just over 100 years old, in the context of 40Ks these would be but the earliest, very most primitive designs, and we simply don't know where designs will go.
      However, there are some real world examples of some of the stranger configurations in use.
      Not sure on the BMPT's autocannon tactical usage, but I did see some footage of one engaging a target in the Ukraine Invasion - here both 30mm were being fired at the same time.

    • @easonyeung2779
      @easonyeung2779 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @leakycheese I'm not sure if you already know this, but the impetus for the BMP-T's creation was that it was designed to counter certain deficiencies the Russian Army faced back in the Chechen Wars.
      When fighting for the city of Grozny, the Chechnyan defenders would hide in or on buildings to ambush Russian convoys. The guns on the Russian vehicles couldn't elevate high enough to hit the Chechnyans, so the Chechnyans could freely attack Russian vehicles with little retaliation. This is why the turret is so strangely shaped on the Terminator, it's designed to allow the guns to point at a higher angle than most turrets normally could.

      On the configuration of the barbettes, my comparison is driven by the striking similarity in the position (identical), number (two) and weapons type (comparable - secondary armament).
      Worth looking at more archive photos of the BMPT to see these weapon stations from more angles - although only included on original configuration.
      The 75mm gun mount on the M3 is definitely comparable, but only if looked at in complete isolation e.g. a tank barbette in the hull. The position (mid-hull), number (one only, offset on right hand side) and weapon type (primary armament) aren't the close match of the BMPT.
      Still, I see the comparison and who's to say that both vehicles - BMPT and M3 - weren't an influence on the designer?
