During my Active Duty days I never had the living space and disposable income to get into the miniatures gaming aspect of Warhammer, but I've always considered the Warhammer novels infinitely superior to, say, Warcraft novels. I enjoyed your exuberant passion in talking about your books as much as learning about some obscure old stuff I'd never heard of. Bravo!
My top 10 would be very similar! Beasts in Velvet and Drachenfels at the top and Skavenslayer top 5. It's hugely entertaining with more humour than most. First part develops a short story from WD which I reread multiple times in my youth!
Great list. I've only read a few Fantasy books so far, but always enjoy them for a light read. Still can't understand why they would just hit the kill-switch on this incredible setting. Bringing it back is good, but man, what a blunder. Hopefully TOW will spawn new novels to enjoy.
I’ve only just started reading GW novels, despite having been into their games and lore since the early 90s. I read Gav Thorpe’s Space Hulk which I really enjoyed, and so have bought Guy Hayley’s Death of Integrity for more Space Hulk action. I’ve also got the first Horus Heresy novel Horus Rising, although I’m not sure I want to go down that rabbit hole with the amount of books in that series! I’ve started reading Blood Bowl stories from the Blood Bowl omnibus and Death on the Pitch: Extra Time, and must say I’m enjoying those too. I’ll definitely buy some of these books you’ve mentioned. I like the sound of the Von Carstein trilogy and the Gotrek & Felix first omnibus, so will buy those now I think!
Death of Integrity is brilliant! It's almost two books in one with the two different space marine chapters giving different takes on the how to deal with a space hulk.
Riders of the Dead is by far my favorite Warhammer story. Skavenslayer, Drachenfels & the Nagash trilogy are in my top, but still way behind Riders of the Dead which I think is a master piece. Shout out to Mark of Chaos by Anthony Reynolds which I enjoy as well.
I love skavenslayer, have you ever read the Thanquol trilogy as they are great books too? Also definitely read fell cargo if you can as it's an amazing read. I would also recommend hammers of ulric
I liked the Jack Yeovil books and the Brian Craig books, and William King's Gotrek books, but with a few exceptions I found the other Black Library stuff to be pretty mediocre. I tried to read Graham McNeill's Guardians of the Forest since everyone sings his praises, but I couldn't get past how he'd given an Old English name, Leofric, to his fantasy counterpart French knight; and the whole elves in the forest/ time difference storyline has been done to death, and by much better writers. I read Jonathan Green's Necromancer to the end and it felt like a kiddie version of Lovecraft's Herbert West stories. I do agree with you about Riders of the Dead ('twas my first Black Library hardback), and I really did like Sandy Mitchell's Blood on the Reik trilogy (even though [or maybe because?] his Empire is the most 'North Essex' version of fantasy Germany ever written). I also enjoyed James Wallis's unfinished Mark of Chaos trilogy. But that's about it.
It saddens me that I have not read any of these Warhammer Fantasy novels. I don't remember reading any WHF novels being more into 40k at the time. Really need to find these and read up on the old World.
Sure thing - here you go: The Burning Shore, Skarsnik, the Witch Hunter Trilogy, Knights of Bretonnia omnibus, the Red Duke, the Ambassador chronicles, Beasts in Velvet, the Von Carstein Trilogy, Skavenslayer and Drachenfells Honourable mentions to Fell Cargo, Riders of the Dead, and the Malus Darkblade series.
@@90percentgeek Thanks very much I really appreciate it, and video was very thoughtful, I just got into WH lore from playing total war game and there is very few videos that focus on wh fantasy books, most of it its 40k. So it's nice to see something like this for change 🙂. P.s. I started my journey with trollslayer, going to read gotrek and felix adventure and then probably straight away into Karak eight peaks or nagash/vampires 😂😂
The first few were probably the best. The last couple weren’t bad either, but the middle ones were largely forgettable. I do like Brian Blessed as Gotrek in the Age of Sigmar reboot though
@@90percentgeek you monster! I mean it's completely fair. Konrad, Orfeo and Genevieve were my introduction to the world and will always hold a special place.
Happy there was a fell cargo mention! Its a fantastic read if you can get a hold of it

All of the books I mentioned are available at the very least as ebooks on the black library website I believe if you fancy giving them a try.
Recently got my hands on a copy of the Red Duke thanks to your circle of blood video. Not far in but have been enjoying it so far
That's awesome! I'm glad it inspired you!
Ooh, you should do a top 10 short stories set in the old world, there were some great ones!

I would love, love, love more books by Kim Newman in The Old World

Anthony Reynolds is a brilliant author, I would have ranked Riders of the Dead but it's no longer available.
The Old World novels are all soooooo good! I simply cannot connect with new AoS storylines. Wonderful picks for your list!
Try Gloomspite! It's one of the best AoS I've read. Also Hamilcar, Champion of the Gods because Hamilcar is probably the best character in AoS.
I love skavenslayer, have you ever read the Thanquol trilogy as they are great books too? Also definitely read fell cargo if you can as it's an amazing read. I would also recommend hammers of ulric
Great selection of books dude! Red Duke is my favourite, such a Great story. Would love to see you do a 40k top 10 book list, is this on the cards?
It's definitely worth a thought, though I'd have to ration myself on Dan Abnett as his stuff is just so good!!!
@90percentgeek haha that's fair, mind you the gothic war books were particularly good aswell by GR

Now I haven´t read any other.. but the Gotrek & felix feels like a good start. in The Empire and all.. Classic RPG setting, i think. And fun. :)

Definitely a great start, might force me to paint up my Dwarf named Characters though! 😇
@@stillunsure7630 I sure hope so! :D
All of the ones I have mentioned in the video are available as ebooks on the black library store.

Cool, I usually find the physical copies for cheaper 2nd hand. 😁
Can you type names of all books, cause it can be hard to find? At least I struggle with it, since I am making collection of good Wh fantasy books. 😊😊

The Gotrek and Felix books are awesome. I can also recommend the Vampire trilogy.
Interesting.. :) Only read the first four or five Gotrek & Felix novels..

@@noops9220 They were fun.. :) I read them like 20 years ago though.. Only Bill King´s..
Ah that soudns like a perfect voice for him!
No Brunner is criminal
No Konrad?
I'll be honest, I was never a big fan of the Konrad trilogy.
