Riley is struggling for the same reasons AJ Koller and Jesse Irvine have struggled. He's been away from the regular grind of the PPA tour, is not getting enough reps as well as not finding a perfect partnership in mixed and in men's.
Pro pickleball is not a big driver of new people to the sport. Most people, new and experienced, have no idea who the pro players are. People are joining the game because of family and friends. I’m a former 4.5 tennis player who has only been playing PB for 18 months after friends talked me into playing with them. Never knew pro PB was a thing, though I’m an avid fan now.
@@TheDinkPickleball Camera angles are important. Unless cameras are behind the players near to the court you don't see the spin, or speed. Table Tennis and Tennis the same, when angles come from the side of the courts you can't appreciate or understand what is going on.
Thank goodness you were able to inform/correct Travis that pickleball was popular before COVID! Even here in a tiny village in Quebec Canada...where there were curfews and outdoor playing bans during COVID so there was Less pickleball being played then. Absolutely correct about not knowing who the pros are. I play at 3.75-4.25 and many players couldn't even name more than 3 pros and never watch PPA or MLP so couldn't put faces to those names.
Travis and Zane two of the best personalities in the sport. Spot on takes. When I try to talk pro pickleball with people at my local rec court they have know idea whom I’m talking about. Power paddles are absolutely going to ruin the spirit of the game. Guys are buying these paddles for the sole purpose of getting off on bagging people it’s the world we live in. Love the pod especially when Travis comes to visit great job boyz.
I’m older than all of you. I’ve worked in the corporate world not just America for many years. When you write an email with this kind of content, you put it in a draft folder. Then, you come back and you read it again and you make appropriate changes and then you save it in your draft folder again. Walk away and come back later and read it. If you feel that it is acceptable to send the email go for it. Also, your actions on the court are just like your actions in front of a customer or in the boardroom. You represent your company or your team and if you intentionally sabotage something that represents your company or your team, be prepared to pay the consequences. He uses his last name to do these things and he has gotten away with it. What is worse, putting an illegal substance on your paddle or intentionally throwing a game and letting down your team? Fine him!
I idolized Andre Agassi when I was a teen in the 90s. Love the guy and I have tons of respect for him. That being said, he is 54 with a back of a 75 year old. Even training as hard as he can, THERE IS NO WAY he beats ALW in singles and that has nothing to do with his shot making and everything to do with his lack of mobility. ALWs shot angles will absolutely carve him up. I think ALW wins 11-5, 11-5. In tennis andre can over power people but in pickleball you can only hit that ball so hard and ALW hits as hard as anyone.
The first foam paddle I know of is the unapproved Diadem Vice. When a player walked out onto the local City Park court, you knew this paddle was too fast, and someone was going to get hurt. USAP has a rule which could have outlawed foam, but it's too late, they blew it by letting the Gearbox Pro in. The foam core has polluted the sport. Eventually, good players, playing in private or organized games will police their own games, banning foam core paddles on their own, just so they can play the game for the sake of playing more competitive games with longer points, where shot making wins the day.
I don’t care for Julian but I like that he stood up for Colin. I think his point is valid that the scumbag who leaked a confidential email is being let off the hook.

38% Right here! No one knows who the pros are...in fact more people at rec courts know the pod and paddle review guys over pros. 80% of pickleball players are 3.5 and under. Great pod and great guest! Keep them coming.
The better more powerful paddles are great for the game! It is a benefit because the game has gotten faster and as a consequence, more fun (that is if all players are of roughly equal skill). Zane is a pickleball prophet who invented the chainsaw serve and helped create a ton of controversy in the game because of it which raised awareness and excitement in pickleball. I mean there were amateurs trying to start their chainsaw paddles all over the country at the public courts! Lol. Nevertheless a few big business guys saw the potential to make big money and ran with it.
Disagree. The faster more powerful paddles will absolutely destroy the ability to play across age brackets. In a tournament, so be it, but in rec play, no. We lose about 40 msec of reaction time per decade, so someone who is 25, with a 250 msec reaction time who plays a 55 year old now has a 33% reaction advantage. The power paddles combined with the change to a plethora of powerful high body shots (I keep thinking I'm going to show up on the court with a catcher's mask), instead of point construction, is also to the point of overcoming the reflexes of the 25 year old profession, which is why there is so much discussion even at the pro levels. If the ball is moving at the limit of the young pros then what do you think that means to the over 40 crowd? If you really want fast and hard then there's always singles or squash, racquetball, and tennis.
When a pickleball comes over the net and the default thought is "I have a power paddle so let's hit this as hard as I can" then a lot of the creativity of pickleball is lost. Creating amazing angles and producing mix-ups center court along with reasonable firefights at the kitchen line are enjoyable. I spend more time now playing dodgeball. Especially at the amateur level a lot of people just fire shots with no actual control. That's when power paddles are a detriment to the game. When I am dodging face shots half the game due to the person across the net having no ability to control their paddle and are just hammering shots because they believe that's the game it's not good and nothing positive comes from it other than eyewear companies making more money due to everyone having to start purchasing safety gear due to the inept individuals on the other side of the net.
Re: hot paddles. I've only been playing 1.5 years and hit the ball hard and have fast hands (tennis background), but I dislike what I’ve seen with the hotter paddles. It's unnatural to see players with 3.5 level technique hit with 5.0 level power and random deflection. I've seen a lot of rec players jump 0.5 points overnight with a hot paddle. It’s not rewarding skill. Case in point, when Jack Sock came into pball, his power and hands were a differentiator, and now he’s average looking. On the other hand, I think the increased grit has made the game more interesting. Grit amplifies skill set and rewards creativity. When I came into the game, I felt the deader paddles made the points a bit boring and the patterns repetitive-however, with the grit, you can manipulate and shape the ball, allowing for more entertaining points. In my opinion, increased grit is like when tennis introduced poly strings, which made the game better and more interesting to watch.

Good episode. Important topics. AGREE that hot paddles are harming the game - diminishing the value of artistry and making the game less enjoyable to watch. On hot paddles - As a 3.5-4.0 player and avid watcher of pro play, I see both sides of the argument. But I like hot paddles in rec play b/c it allows you to “carry” a partner a little bit more. For pro play, I 10000% believe the dink rallies are shorter with hot paddles. I wish Real Clear Stats had some info on average dinks per point before and after Gen 3. But from my perspective, the confident players (like H and Tardio) pull the trigger WAY more often with these hot paddles. Sure hands battles are shorter/more random, but with these paddles the opportunities are MUCH higher to speed up. I believe if Gen 3 was the limit, hands battles specifically would start to slowly go back to the way they were before as people get faster/smarter.
In argument for these more powerful paddles is 💰. The way that USAPA controlled paddles was only based on grit of the surface and so when they maximize or put a cap on that grit which creates spin, it takes the shape off of possible shots, which is really what I think would benefit the game more than more power. But because power was unregulated the only way for paddle companies to stand out in a huge market was to increase the power. And everybody is looking for way to improve without drilling 😂
I think is just a clash of personality types. You have those that prefer individual performances where you get to pick your own partner and less trash talk vs those that prefer team format where you feed off the energy of each other. Love the podcast, but I think it's really irresponsible for you to suggest over and over again that it was text messages from his ex-girlfriend. I'm not sure what the evidence is, but Jimmy Miller stated explicitly that she is not the person that release the messages and that he has physically seen evidence of this. he also reported that the message was a long diatribe text message that ultimately became a document because once a message gets too long it forces it into a document form. Collin, according to Jimmy, clearly followed up the long message with a message saying to send it up to the top MLP brass. So I hope you follow up this podcast and correct some of this because the ex-girlfriend was not the source, the message was one long document, not pieced together, it was sent, and then followed up with a suggestion to send it up to the top brass, and then completely lied to the general public with his statement, possibly not thinking that the actual true communication would ever come to light I'm only reiterating everything because once you put it all together, it's very clear that Colin is the issue
So Collin signed a contract that included MLP participation right? Was it all or nothing, or negotiable to opt-out at a lower salary? Not sure of the merger timing on this topic - wondering if he's aggrieved due to "I didn't sign up for this sh!t" terms of signed agreement. Sounds like he is a wannabe 1%'er, clinging to Trickle-Down economic theory as well - maybe Ben's talent and success has trickled down to him? I'm glad he works harder than average players to offset the progressive penalty that is their inferiority.
Thank you for posting. Sorry, Zane, you don't offer info that is against anything. You even say in most of your posts you won't go against big pickleball. Travis more often says what is going on. And only Jilly B. really goes against big pickleball. IMO, CJ had many (not all) great points about pro pickleball. If players don't start up a Players' Union, big pickleball will continue to screw you, the sport, and us over. Right now, pro pickleball is so disorganized, unethical, and inconsistent. I can see no pro pickleball in 5 years.

Sounds like he is a wannabe 1%'er, clinging to Trickle-Down economic theory as well - maybe Ben's talent and success has trickled down to him? I'm glad he works harder than average players to offset the progressive penalty that is their inferiority.
Not to defend him but he signed with PPA....then PPA AND mLP merged.
Don’t know if this pod was done on Aug 8, but if it was then Kyle’s birthday is on National Pickleball Day. How appropriate. Happy birthday 🎉
Jimmy Miller says its not a leak. It was an actual email.
Why would Riley play with Travis……Travis is a scrub who flukes good finishes
The first foam paddle I know of is the unapproved Diadem Vice. When a player walked out onto the local City Park court, you knew this paddle was too fast, and someone was going to get hurt. USAP has a rule which could have outlawed foam, but it's too late, they blew it by letting the Gearbox Pro in. The foam core has polluted the sport. Eventually, good players, playing in private or organized games will police their own games, banning foam core paddles on their own, just so they can play the game for the sake of playing more competitive games with longer points, where shot making wins the day.
