  • We love electric rideables. Hoverboards, skateboards, scooters, motorcycles, mopeds, unicycles, tricycles… You name it, we’ve ridden it. But electric bikes belong in a category of their own because they are more than just a fun tech fad. They could actually be the future of transportation. That said, there’s a lot to choose from out there, and you don’t want to get fooled, so here’s what you need to know.
    Around 5:20 in the video, we say that in Europe, class 1 e-bikes are the most popular. Actually, the most popular e-bikes in the EU are unregulated with motors rated at 250W.

    Volts * Amps = Watts, which is a measure of power (work done per unit time).

    The biggest problem for e-bikes is theft, in places like victoria bc and vancouver there are bike thieves all over, thats the number one reason why i havnt gotten one yet, sure they are great for a joy ride but if you wanna take it downtown and go for a meal or a drink or coffee, theres a good chance your bike could get stolen if it's not within view for you.

    Sorry for the obvious question, but I didnt really get the point whats the main difference (practical) between a normal bike (say city) and an e-bike? Is the pedal pushing and riding easier than on a normal bike? Or you can just push a button and ride without needing to even push the pedals, like for example like on an electric scooter?

    • @tconnolly9820
      @tconnolly9820 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With a "pedelec" e-bike you will have to pedal to also engage the motor. There are different levels of assist depending on the particular bike.
      Low is usually about an additional 50% assist along with pedalling.
      High/Turbo is usually around 250/300% assist along with pedalling.
      But depending on where you live, the motor stops assisting when you reach 20mph. 15mph in Europe.
      You might be thinking of an e-scooter?
      And no, pedaling will not charge the battery. The more you pedal and the lower assist level you select, the less battery you will use. That's all.

    My primary form of transportation is an ebike and it really does make a lot of sense in a city like Portland where there is good enough infrastructure to make it work. It’s got me riding again where I had started to lean more heavily on public transit and now I barely use transit. I think price is a real barrier but if you are planning on going car free then it’s easier to justify the cost. People justify spending thousands of dollars on a lot of stuff it just depends on what you are looking to get out of it. Of course it will seem expensive if you are only looking at it as a toy or something for recreation....that’s fine of course but it really can work as primary transportation as long as you have the right gear to make it work.
