Love your videos mate, do you prefer this version or the Broadway version(considering you use images from the Broadway version when talking about Hadestown) just curious. I also made the taserface at some point😂
I think it would be so rad if Hadestown hired actual old women to play those parts. I’m sure there’s some elderly ladies out there who still have some pipes.
PLEASE make the filmed version of this production available for purchase if you can!!! i know there's the broadway version out there rn but surely this one is different enough that a recording of it wouldn't be as ethically iffy... please please the NYTW version is my favourite thing ever
me: *is happy they’re releasing more nytw clips !! :DD* also me: yoU’RE THREE YEARS LATE- i’m kidding, but it’s really nice seeing how much hadestown has evolved !! also just how the nytw production played out onstage (bc i think we’ve all been curious, since most of us never saw it irl)
I would've loved to have seen Chris do Hermes. Sure, Andre de Shields does his own thing, but Chris sounded like a genuine Nawlins man when he played the role.
Say what you will about the Broadway Show, this version was my first and will always hold a special place in my heart. Sullivan has an energy to his Hermes, who is meant to be one of the youngest Gods, that Andre exchanges for more of the traditional elder storyteller role.
Yes. He makes Hermes more mischievous which is far more accurate to the god. Hermes was also a relatively young god (that point didn't bother me as much; Andrè being older, I mean), and Chris embodies him perfectly in my eyes.
@@psiamnotdrunk Subjective, yes, and you are right that God's aren't real, but we're talking about a production that depicts Gods as real life entities that interact with mortals. As such, one has to go and determine what comes off more God like and what would you consider to be a more imposing entity. To me, a God is a figure who demands respect, where everything they say, no matter how much you agree or disagree with it, holds weight to it where you would never even contemplate speaking up against them. They're figures who with a single word, causes fear in all who hear it. Andre never gave off that tone of mischief and intimidation and instead came off more frail, a voice that never held much weight to it and never sounded anywhere close to what a God like figure would sound.
I've been coming back and watching this video again and again just hoping they might release the whole performance one day... Gosh the Epics would kill me and If It's True would send my soul straight to Hades.
Lillias White is fabulous and I hope she stays as Hermes for a long, long time, but when she finally decides it's time to hang up her silver shoes, I'd love for Chris Sullivan to reprise the role. This is SO good!
@@itsyaboilogan642 No I miss Nabiyah! She has such a uniquely soft yet strong voice. I pretty much only listen to the original cast recording instead of the broadway one. She and Damon had such great chemistry you can hear it in the music.
T...T....Toby? He has been the voice of the soundtrack?! That's crazy cuz on "This is Us" he doesn't really sing! He sounds amazing! I still really like André as Hermes, but my God, Chris really adds something to this part. Like when he says "there ain't no compas, brother, there ain't no map..." he really sounds like your best buddy from the country. It is just different from André's griot/ " Rafiki style" of narrating the story.
Is that unpopular? Cause while I enjoy Andre’s energy at most points, his voice just isn’t there. I think Chris works better as Hermes, because in the original run he is much more connected to Orpheus, even if he may not have had as much time onstage with him. Plus his voice is much better both for Hermes and in general, which is probably a more controversial point.
For those who are looking - while I haven't seen video of this performance, an audio recording of this cast is available on Apple Music (and maybe others) - look for "Hadestown: The Myth. The Musical (Original Cast Recording) [Live[" It is very interesting to hear how some of the characters and lyrics have changed over time and how different actors portray them. (Hermes being the most obvious change.)
Coming back to this after Chris graciously sang a little bit of it for me last week after the final show of The Thanksgiving Play, and meeting Rachel Chavkin the same day. Seeing this video some years ago is the reason why I fell in love with Hadestown in the first place 🥹
honestly i think i prefer chris to andre :0 i love andre but he carries a very specific grace and dignity that makes him feel kind of like a swan on-stage? it feels super different to the energy and heart chris brings (which feels more important with the swing and jazz of the show) which to me makes chris just feel like ... that bit more organic in comparison
If anyone cares, I would pay really good money to see this whole performance on DVD. Or even in theatres. Or, how about both? $$$ #hadesnytw4dvdrelease
Honestly I like both Chris Sullivan and Andre de shields as hermes, but I think they fit different songs better, I think andre fits this song better, but chris fits wait for me better, that's how I'm thinking about this
I think I prefer a Hermès depending on the song. But if I had to chose I think they both fit the versions of the story being told but in the more bigger songs like way down to hades town I prefer Chris Sullivan’s Hermès and in songs like come home with me I prefer andres
I knew it was the same actor but with this clip it finally hit me that I've been listening to TASERFACE all this time
I hadn't connected it until you said that. Thanks for that....I guess. (By the way, love your videos, dude)
Love your videos mate, do you prefer this version or the Broadway version(considering you use images from the Broadway version when talking about Hadestown) just curious. I also made the taserface at some point😂
Did not expect to see a TH-camr I watch religiously to be in the comment section of a clip of a musical that I guess I also watch religiously.
What is this? A crossover episode?
Whaaaat?!
Hermes: and there were three old women all dressed the same
(Enter: three young women all dressed differently)
JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA
The way he sings it, I couldn't tell the difference 🤤
I think it would be so rad if Hadestown hired actual old women to play those parts. I’m sure there’s some elderly ladies out there who still have some pipes.
@@ahobbit1273 god i want to see the version of hadestown where the fates are played by 70 year old women
They were offended if you see
Both Andre and Sullivan bring a different flavor to Hermès and I can’t possibly chose who I like more. It’s also really cool to see it this early
He's like an old-fashioned hobo! I kinda love it
Sullivan for sure. Like an old timey prospector or sheriff
that trombonist is killing it wow
The whole BAND kills it, but omg the trombone in this song just fucking rocks. So smooth but gritty
Bryan Drye!
3 years later they realise we the songbirds are gonna watch this religiously
Oh my god this is the cast the animatics keep portraying.
I know, I was so confused seeing animatics until I saw the og cast
damon walked into frame and i was ready to die for him

Hm I wish I had it
But I'd keep it
I’d sell all my books, my playbills and my pancreas for the rest of the footage
Honestly saaaaame
This is amazing but did you guys really had clips this whole time while I was suffering to find anything related to hadestown??
I could listen to Chris sing the words "Road to Hell" for 10 hours
THERE’S BEEN OFFICIAL FOOTAGE OF THIS THE WHOLE TIME?!

jasobres yessss I 100% agree. I don’t even know if he’s from here, but if he isn’t, I’d be so surprised. He plays it so well.
honestly why i listen to this version of the cast. Though today's production is so much better.
I don't think Andre on the recording does that great. A broadway legend sure but a miscast as hermes.
Chris is the GOAT
@@whodatninja439miscast? Lol. The man won a Tony for the role.
we all miss chris sullivan change my mind
I would sell my soul for the whole footage of this show

He has such a good story telling voice it’s insane
I love this version of Hermes. I also love the Hermes from the broadway but this Hermes is my all time fave
he's my fav. he has so much more energy and power
Say what you will about the Broadway Show, this version was my first and will always hold a special place in my heart. Sullivan has an energy to his Hermes, who is meant to be one of the youngest Gods, that Andre exchanges for more of the traditional elder storyteller role.
Now imagine the pure power Chris and Andre would have together.
I think the reason I love Chris so much as Hermes is because he just has that voice that suits the character far more than Andre.
Yes. He makes Hermes more mischievous which is far more accurate to the god. Hermes was also a relatively young god (that point didn't bother me as much; Andrè being older, I mean), and Chris embodies him perfectly in my eyes.

Chris is more animated and kills it, but then Andre brings this amazing cool to the role.
