  • Two years since the arrival of Cheetahs in India - for the team at Kuno, it's been nothing short of a rollercoaster. Watch this film which tries to encapsulate the basket of emotions that everyone involved in the Reintroduction of Cheetahs has felt - the joys and the setbacks, the hardships and the triumphs. This is the Rise of Cheetahs; and it signifies something that has united not just scientists, local communities and field officers but also every citizen in our nation in more than one way.
    Kuno National Park & MP Tiger Foundation Samiti jointly present Kuno: Rise of Cheetah, a film by Nishant and Himani.

    I remember hearing about the project that aims to reintroduce cheetahs in the Indian landscape with some specimens from South Africa and Namibia. During that time, I was curious of how they were doing and it wasn’t too long ago when I heard about cubs being born in Kuno for the very first time in 7 decades. Hard to believe that it’s been 2 years since that momentous occasion. With this video, I now see that not only there are more than previously mentioned but also one of them is old enough to look after itself and make its claim in the subcontinent. Marvelous.
    I saw a video that was discussing about the Asiatic counterpart of this cat which is now residing in a preserve in Iran when they were mentioning their differences. Turns out, after taking a closer look in their DNA, they made a conclusion. Genetically speaking, both the African and Asiatic cheetah are one and the same. With this in mind, I can imagine a scenario where if they plan to continue this project, they should bring a few of the remaining population in Iran to India so that these creatures can procreate to not only increase their numbers but to increase their genetic diversity, as well. That way, their offsprings will become stronger and healthier as they adapt to this environment and little by little, the Asiatic cheetah can come back from the brink. Food for thought. Thank you for this report, Kapoor. 🙏🐆🌍

Hearty congratulations to all involved with the project. Look forward to more such short documentaries. Thanks!

      We've tried to answer the most common doubts and questions. Any wild animal, especially one of higher intellect and complex social system as a cheetah is feeling safe to breed and give cubs. That says a lot about them adapting here. 18 month old cub is hunting down small prey on her own. Kuno has amongst the highest density of spotted deer in MP. It has grasslands, 40 of them. Surrounding rural areas and connected forests will support population when it grows. From a tourism perspective, park will open soon from Ahira gate. These most common questions have been answered in the film, to the best that we could in a limited runtime of 6 minutes.

    Biggest mistake of getting african cheetah, we could have got the real Asiatic cheetah from Iran it's a fact many will ignore

    • @erikm8372
      @erikm8372 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      But you can’t ignore the fact that when the Shah was deposed in Iran, and the Islamic revolution took place, the negotiations for cheetahs to be transferred out of Iran were forgotten by both of the governments of both nations. So blame the powers that be. But even if India WERE to receive Persian cheetahs, how would they ever find them? There aren’t many left there… and I don’t think scientists want to remove them from their native home simply because they’re Asian cheetahs. No one would condone the risk of stressing and even killing (by accident) the few Iranian cheetahs, by sedating, tranquillizing, transporting, and moving them. They could die of a negative reaction to the tranquilizer. And clearly some have not survived coming from Africa. So I don’t think it was a realistic risk to be taken. There are less than one hundred Persian cheetahs left, I believe. African cheetahs may be slightly different, genetically, but there are more of them surviving to be transferred to India.
      Another thing: it’s colder in Iran than in Madhya Pradesh. It snows in Iran in the mountains where the cheetahs still live. In Africa, the weather is basically similar to Kuno. So it’s an easier transition.
