I love that place. I grew up going to fort pickens about once or twice a year. Ah the memories. I'm glad that the old forts still standing after all the bad hurricanes that have passed through in recent times.

That's awesome! A good buddy and I went to Fort Pickens around 1996 or 1997. I drove us and our girls out there in a 1950 Cadillac Hearse and had the time of my life. Thanks for the reminder of them times.

Thanks for the great video, Adam. That place has some amazing brick work and patina on the walls. I loved all of the domed tunnels.
I've been to at least 3 forts (possibly a few more that slip my mind now), Fort DeSoto in St Petersburg, Castillo de San Marcos in St Augustine and Fort Foster at Hillsborough River State Park.
I love old forts, you can almost feel the history when you visit them.

Awesome Adam, glad you could make it out to our neck of the woods!! Ft Pickens is part of the National Parks Service, It has been used through the civil war, & WW2. There a quite a few more things to explore just across the Bay from where you were at. The Navy Base is awesome to explore. Glad you could enjoy the area, too bad it was windy & rainy. Take Care on the road, maybe you can stop back by again & spend a couple days!!

I've been to Fort MacArthur in San Pedro California. It is very haunted also. I see an apparition there every time I go. The spirits there say that there is one hundred spirits there haunting the Fort. "There he is!" at 1:35. "Hurry up!" at 3:11-3:12. "Having a good time?!" at 3:27. A voice at 4:37. "You shouldn't be here!" at 5:59. "Jack!" at 6:03. "You're ok!" at 7:19-7:20. Boy it sure sounds like a spirit is shouting "I am American!!!" at 10:17. A proud soldier. It sounds like he says it again at 10:22. "I'm Amarillo" at 10:29-10:30. Perhaps a soldier is identifying himself. I'm glad you explored here, Adam. American spirit is alive and well at Fort Pickens.

I've been to Fort Sumter in South Carolina and Fort Pulaski in Georgia and I live fifty miles from Fort Sills in Oklahoma where you can go visit Geronimos grave which to this day people leave flowers and gifts on his grave. Its in a small cemetery with other Indians. It's real cool ! Would love to see Fort Pickens some time. I love the civil war history the best. Great video Adam !!!

Love that place. There's another fort across the bay, Fort Barrancas. During the Civil War, when Florida seceded from the Union, Confederate troops took up residence in Barrancas. The Union troops in Pickens, however, never left. I'm not sure the fort lasted to the end of the war, but I know for a good long while the troops at Pickens kept the South from using Pensacola's port to resupply. They would periodically shoot cannon at each other across the bay, but neither had guns with quite enough range to reach the other. The University of West Florida has a highly regarded archaeology department that has come up with hundreds of cannonballs from the bay during exploration and dredging. Also of note, there's a gap in the fort where one of the corners used to be. It was a powder magazine that went up, taking out a big chunk of the building and killing several servicemen. I don't recall if that was before, during or after the Civil War. And yes, as noted below, Geronimo and followers were imprisoned in that fort for some time, but it wasn't his last stop. The fort was redone in the early 20th century as part of the US's coastal defense network, but was decommissioned after WW2. The tower you were in was likely part of that transition, or might be an even later addition for coastal observation by Coast Guard or even civilian authorities. If you ever swing back through Pensacola, Barrancas and the earlier Spanish-built redoubt below it are quite interesting, and more complete relics.

Whoah! You were in my hometown! Yay! lol. Fort Pickens is a lot of fun. Been going there for years. It sustained a little damage during Hurricane Ivan where it flooded up to the top of those main arches. Fort Barrancas on the naval base is in much better shape and pretty massive as well. Fort McRae which is only reachable by a 3 hour walk or by boat has been ravaged by hurricanes and is mostly underwater...although there is a good size chunk still on land. Another awesome video, sir!

It is so sad that it is not being preserved as a National Monument. There are other forts in Florida that I have been to, One in St Augustine (that is being cared for) and one somewhere near Tampa, on an Island Adam, much like the one in this video that is not being preserved. We happened upon it while boating. Great video!

There is a Fort up here in Maine called Fort Williams. It has all of the earmarks of the war like where the cannons and the guns once stood as well as a few buildings that are now used as a rehab thing. But the rest of it is open and you are able to walk around and through certain areas. Pretty cool. There is also a Light house there as well. Its name is The Portland Headlight.

  • @Mossberg850
    @Mossberg850 11 ปีที่แล้ว

Hey cool video. I love those old Forts and Batteries. I've been through Fort Pickens and Fort Barrancus. The Advanced Redoubt is pretty neat too, except you can only walk around it since the draw bridge is up. Batteries: Worth, Cullum-Servier, Cooper, 234 and 233 are pretty cool too. Batteries 233 & 234 are identical. 234, is locked up while I've noticed seeing an online video of the underground bunker of battery 233 is open. You can find that place on Foster's Bank across from Fort Pickens.

Fort Ancient, an old Indian "settlement". Walls made of earth and stones(mounds) layed out to surround a huge area on top of the hills above the Miami river in Ohio, bout 35 miles outside of Cincinnati. It is a park now complete with small museum, also lots of burial mounds around.

As a matter of fact I have been in a Fort before. I use to go to Fort William Henry in Lake George NY all the time, and Fort Ticonderoga in NY a few times too. I use to live a little while away from Saratoga Battlefield in NY. I live 10 minutes away from Fort Edward NY, now a town on the Hudson River that was important in the Revolution. Pretty awesome historical places all over Upstate NY.

The spotters/gun rangers would be in the tower plotting the distance to the target, the position and such and communicating that info to the big guns. VERY vulnerable position to be in. NO reasonable armor against hard hitting shells. There'd usually be two towers working together to triangulate a precise position to target.

During the Civil War Pickens and Barrancas were each captured by either side (can't recall which side got which fort) and actually exchanged fire though the forts are to far apart for them to actually hit the other. Pickens and Barrancas are two of three forts (the third is in Alabama) that were built to defend that entrance to Santa Rosa Sound.

Especially considering that large parts fort was submerged in salt water for days if not weeks after Hurricane Ivan in 2004 (the fort itself is lower than the surrounding area so held the water). At the time the park service wasn't sure if the fort would ever be able to be reopened to the public due to the damage but thankfully they were able to.

Fort Pickens was involved during the US Civil War. The union abandoned Forts Barrancus and McRee and set up base at Fort Pickens. The Confederates set up base a Forts Barrancus and McRee. Later on there was a bombardment between those forts. Fort McRee was heavily damaged while Forts Pickens and Barrancus were pretty much intact afterwards. Now the concrete like batteries set up around Fort Pickens were built to defend the coast during possible attack during WW2 and such.

The word you were searching for is parapet for the duck and shoot weapons emplacement. Those little cubby holes you were looking at were for ammunition storage and movement. You never wanted to keep more than a few rounds out in the open near your gun because if you took an incoming shell it would set off the ammunition. Lots of bunkers and protected storage for the ammunition.

Those airplanes you are hearing are from Naval Air Station Pensacola, not Eglin AFB. NAS Pensacola is just across the sound from Fort Pickens and is a primary flight training base for the Navy. You should have visited Fort Barrancas onboard the base, it is a different style fort and is in a lot better shape than Fort Pickens. There's also other cool sights on base, Barrancas National Cemetery, the Naval Air Museum and an old lighthouse.
