    That last part=SO ACCURATE!!! It’s so frustrating. I’ll clean the cage till it’s spotless, bathe my rats so they’re nice and clean, then when I come back the next morning they’ve covered themselves in shit/piss by chilling (and eating) in their litter box, torn the hammock to shreds, and smooshed poo/pee into their space pods, which they then sleep in. 🙄😷UGH but they’re so damn sweet you can’t be mad! They’re worth it. 🖤

    How do you deal with being allergic to them? Can you still touch and cuddle them? What are the allergic reactions you get? I'm thinking about getting rats and I don't know if I am allergic or not, or what I will have to do if I am

    • @laurenelloise
      @laurenelloise  6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's really hard sometimes. I still touch and cuddle/kiss them because I love them. 4 years ago when I first got rats, I'd get red/bumpy skin if they scratched me and I'd get a rash on the backs of my hands. I don't get that anymore. But I suffer with severe asthma, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis (all of which I didn't have before I owned rats). It's hard to deal with sometimes because I sneeze 50 times a day and I can't taste or smell due to my nose being constantly inflamed. I think after these girls I won't get any more rats. Are you allergic to anything else? I think rat allergy is common though. I'd try seeing some rats and seeing how you react to them if possible. Have them crawl over you, let them scratch you, if you come out in a hive or sneeze alot, then you could be allergic. 💗 To help with my allergies, I take asthama medication, carry an inhaler, take steroid nasal spray everyday, I don't let the rats in my bedroom and I use a dust mask when I clean their cage. Hope this helps!

    • @markvale8168
      @markvale8168 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      awh, I am sorry for you. Must be hard being allergic to something you love! I am allergic to dust and pollen. I've had rabbits before and I have a dog now, I am not allergic to them but can sometimes react if they have dust in their fur and I rub my face in it. I don't think I know anyone who owns rats, but I will research some more. Thanks so much for answering

    • @laurenelloise
      @laurenelloise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Yea but they're too cute. Ah yeah im allergic to dust and pollen too. It's a good sign that you aren't allergic to dogs or rabbits. But yeah, I'd even try going to a pet shop and maybe hold some without buying them or anything just to see how it goes 💗

    Can someone help, I’m planning on getting rats soon. Should I get a single critter nation and get another one to connect to it later or should I get the feisty ferret cage. I’m just afraid the single critter nation will be too small. I want my rats to be as happy as possible.

    • @laurenelloise
      @laurenelloise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The single critter nation is still very big. I personally would house 4 rats at the most in a single alone. It's very roomy. And, like you said, you have the option to add another one later if you decide to get more rats or want even more space. The fiesty ferret isn't a good choice because of the bar spacing. The gaps between are 1 inch which is far too large. The critter nation and my cage have half an inch bar spacing. x

      Aaron Hub That is amazing time out of the cage though. I have 4 tiny girls, so i limit them to about 20-30 minutes before they start trying to either escape the play pen, or chew my socks/get under my legs. So when they start exibiting behavior I disprove of, back they go. Do you work from home to be able to give them this kind of free range time? I wish i had that much time to dedicate to my little girls. I have a jealous small dog.. and a teenager. Lol

    • @AaronHub

      Not all pet shops are bad but majority are. I would try finding a breeder but if you really don't have any option, check out the pet shops set up (ask to look in the back). www.shadowrat.com/rats/petshop.html This kinda goes over why pet shops are bad (I'm not sure how much you know so I'll just leave it here in case). But hopefully after reading this, it'll help you decide if you visit the pet shop. 💗

    I'm allergic to cats and dogs, do you think I'll be allergic to rats too. What else do you do to limit your allergic reactions.

    • @laurenelloise
      @laurenelloise  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most likely you will be! I would avoid getting rats if I were you. They really messed up my lungs. I now have asthma and I'm allergic to painkillers because of them. I tried keeping them out of my room, using a mask when cleaning their cage, and changing my clothes, washing my hands right after, but it doesn't really help. Their dander/urine/fur travels through the air, you can't really stop it. If you really can't give up the idea, go to a breeder or somewhere you can hold rats and if you end up sneezing or getting red marks on your hands, you're allergic.

    I have three rats too.
    Oreo and her sister Marshmallow
    Big fat Poe boy (he's neutered)
    and they are featured on my channel My Rattie Mischief
    Sit in a corner and cry...
    I have to say I should be cleaning (and crying over) my rat cage because it gets destroyed 0.000001 seconds after it gets cleaned lol.

      When I got rats I didn’t know I was allergic. A few years later I don’t have rats anymore.

    lol @ crying. Megan was *very* naughty a few days ago - she chewed dad's PS4 microphone (whilst he was playing with friends). *sigh* . You wanna hear destructo rat stories? Old rattie (now in rainbow heaven) Dru decided that dad's *very* expensive hifi cable ($400) need to be chewed...I was NOT impressed. A week later, she chewed half the fibre cables on my DAC (digital to analogue converter) - thankfully they were only $10 a pop...she was a bugger of a rat lol!

      mrtheoden my ratties love destroying my expensive headphones 😂

    • @davepastern
      @davepastern 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ouch. They thankfully don't get near mine (Sennheiser HD600 @ $549; Sennheiser HD540 Gold reference - long discontinued, $1000 back in 1988; Audeze LCD2 planars $1599).

      mrtheoden keep it hidden! Keep it save hahaha. I've bought like 4 new pairs now. You'd think I'd learned by now😂

      @davepastern 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, my good headphones (540 and audeze's) are in their respective storage boxes. The HD600's are used upstairs on my mac. My current ratties are good girls and stay on my bed during out time. Old Dru and her sister Wu, were just *really* mischievous and figured out how to get off the bed, onto my bedroom floor. There was no way to stop them. At least they both came when I called them. Dru was the smartest rat that I EVER owned, that rat was human, I swear!!!

    Why do u wear a mask, is it bc of rat poop or pee?sorry I'm new (;

    • @laurenelloise
      @laurenelloise  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s okay, I wear it because I am allergic to rats. So when I’m cleaning, I’m basically stirring up all the allergens in the air, it’s the mask stops me breathing them in.

    • @laurenelloise
      @laurenelloise  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn't know I was allergic til a long while after I first got rats. I have them because I love them. They make such great pets. In future though, I won't be getting more. I've had 8 all together so I think it'll be time to give my body a little rest.

      @laurenelloise  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      They’re like little dogs. Very friendly and affectionate. Funny little creatures with great personalities. They are very inquisitive and smart. They can learn tricks, learn their names, and bond with their owners. One of the best pets I’ve ever had!
