Well, Disney right now is epitomizing that line from the original Blade: "some motherfuckers always try to ice skate uphill".

Slightly off about the dwarves in Snow White problem. When that picture was leaked Disney initaly swore they were stand ins. They then pivoted and said they were "magical creatures'. The narrative shifted a third time when Disney swore they were actually 'bandits' that aided the stand in for the prince. It was only then, during the 4th retelling of events that Disney released the CGI dwarves and tried to act like it was always the plan.

So insulting to Dwarf actors. They pulled the dwarves due in part because of that GoT actor, Peter Dinklage, because he did not get a part and then spouted a bunch of woke lies. But now they are using CGI dwarves. That is obscene.

I think it's stupid that how the dwarves will be portrayed is actually an issue,

they should have stayed with the Seven Diversity Hires, at least those don't evoke the Uncanny Valley feeling

    • @sprinkle61
      @sprinkle61 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Halfort57 I too prefer the diversity hires. The core problem is that animation lets you get away with stuff that is harder in real life, creating the core problem with making this live action. By using humans, they almost HAD to wade into the political incorrectness of dealing with real life dwarfism as some kind of magical creature effect, and the alternative of just making them seven random humans kind of destroys part of the original story, and triggers the anti-woke crowd. Going with Alvin and the Chipmunks level CGI dwarves is like the worst of all worlds, since its no longer really live action, but its not as good as the original animation. This will be a hugely expensive movie, since the dwarves are main characters in the original, and their relatively large screen time means both that this will be a very costly movie, but also that we will have to endure a ton of CGI characters goofing around on the screen. CGI is best used in small doses, preferably for action scenes. By making CGI the main effect of most of this movie, its certain to both be terrible, and not really mock-able either, since its now just another generic kids movie, and nothing that can really be ridiculed for wokeness, which I actually enjoy, and I was looking forward to mocking the absurdity of these diversity hires trying to actually play the dwarf parts in the original movie.

Blade going R rated and with a smaller budget is the best decision they could have made. In fact a lot of MCU films could do with halving their budget so as to not make bloated souless messes. I always use the first X-men and Deadpool of great examples of working magic with far less. Both of which had their budgets slashed twice during production.

    • @tobybigham4196
      @tobybigham4196 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

I totally agree with you on Deadpool, but you lost me at X-men. The movie was enjoyable, but the plot holes, the contrivances, and the directing could have used a lot of work!!! Even the character arcs in X-men was laughable!
Blade on the other hand, was done so well the first time, they will be stuck with coming up with something post Whistler if they want to keep audiences happy. It really seems they want to do the Midnight Suns story eventually, so they should stick with a story that will get them there, but definitely keep the budget tight, because you really don't need a lot here! This should be on par with the Budget of "Werefolf by Night" and keeping a lower rating might help it's box office take!

The star of Snow White went to every press junket essentially talking about how much she didn't like the story that she was starring in, how "outdated" it was, flippantly smugging about how her co-star might get totally cut from the film because Snow White's "power" was much more important. Peter Dinklage pretty much pulled the ladder up behind him by complaining about dwarves in movies, keeping seven of his fellow actors from being eligible for work. The entire endeavor was unasked for, unnecessary, nasty and cynical, but sure, it's doomed because "the usual suspects complained." What a boring, unoriginal analysis. Thanks.

The generic WhatCulture host doesn't understand what happened with the new Snow White movie. Or he was afraid of being cancelled. Peter Dinklage has been criticized by every single small person actor in Hollywood. His comments during early production changed the direction of the movie. Disney was originally going to hire 7 real little people for the roles. In response to Peter's comment, Disney chose to hire 6 people of average height and one little person. After that received a negative reaction Disney chose to go completely uncanny valley. Peter is not very popular within that community as a result.

Which they obviously are replacing the other average sized actors we saw from the leaks and subsequent backlash from that leak.
The official photo of them all is an obvious replacement of the other actors that would have been there, and reshoots are happening for the scenes they can't salvage by placing the CGI over them. We will see these CGI dwarves standing on a lot of things 😂

That's categorically irrelevant since they're remaking the animated movie, Snow White and the seven dwarfs which depicts the stereotypical fantasy race we all know. The original Snow White tale as discovered and modified by the Brothers Grimm, is likely based on one of two real women (Maria Sophia von Erthal of Lohr - 1730s or Margarete Von Waldeck of Bad Wildungen -1550s). There was a local mine in each case most versions of the original tale had children working the mine given their size.
The Brothers Grimm often softened the harsh realities engrained in the fairy tales they collected; they made the miners dwarves to make the story more fantastical and palatable.

True. BTW, since the dwarfs in the original fairy tale pretty much have to be those folklore creatures - that is something that hasn't been used in any Snow White movie yet, mostly they are depicted as some sort of humans in all, I think, so if they wanted a bit more fresh take that is what they should have done. The dwarfs are faerie creatures, their cottage is in another, magical realm, time will perhaps go at a different pace there than it goes for the queen, the glass coffin is magical and the dwarfs know, or maybe even guide, the prince to it and are in the end the ones responsible for her waking up after he finds her. Maybe they are the ones who guide her fate the whole time.

The problem with the Dwarves in Snow White is no one seriously believes those actors were "stand ins" and the image released by Disney months later when the scandal already brewed for months convinced no one as they clearly were not up to Disney usual standards and looked thrown together and fake. The so-called stand ins were in costume, looked nothing like the animated versions and there was previous statements by Disney that they were not using Dwarves, mainly because of Peter Dinklage saying it was offensive. Why would they all be different heights with one little person if they were stand ins for CGI? What would be the point of that? Then you had the comments from the lead actress on top basically dumping all over the original. If the dwarves were genuine in the latter photos, they could have easily nipped the whole controversy in the bud by releasing that photo months prior. It did not exist because the seven far left diverse adults WERE the new dwarves. Everyone knows it.
And people are also getting tired of Disney and people like them saying offensive things, insulting their audience, changing things for far left political reasons, clearly trying to fan bait their audience and ramming politics into kid movies, then gaslighting the same audience when anyone complains, like it is their problem they don't like it and snidely label people who do as "the usual suspects that complain." You mean like everyone? It isn't our problem, it is theirs for doing it. Box office for all the bomb Disney's movies have proven WE are the majority, not you. Videos also acting like the dwarves were always animated and CGI, like Disney is telling the truth, and everyone who said otherwise was nuts is also the definition of gaslighting.

One variable almost never mentioned in box office performance is that fewer people have the disposable income to view a film multiple times in a theater...especially when high definition televisions provide a much better experience than in the past.
Another one is that the behavior of modern audiences tend to make that experience less enjoyable rather than enhance it.

The biggest factor though, is streaming.
People will miss the cinema and wait a month or two for it to hit their streaming service and watch it at home, rather than go to a cinema, buy overpriced tickets and food, possibly have others talk during it, get all the ads before the movie, worrying about parking etc.
People would rather watch it at home, on their streaming service, which costs less a month than a movie ticket.
People did this during the pandemic when cinemas were closed and it really took off.
I think the game has changed, and the ratings system needs to change with it.
It should be based on audiences on all platforms, not just cinema box office.

Most, if not all, of the traditional economic indicators used to determine the strength of the economy are doing exceptionally well. But never in modern history have these indicators been more divorced from the everyday life and financial health of the common worker in America. The old saw that a rising tide lifts all ships is obsolete. More than any time since chattel slavery only those with yachts are lifted and the rest may stay afloat, get scuttled, or drown. The good economy does NOT trickle down!@@macethorns1168

@@macethorns1168 The economy isn't doing great. It hasn't since COVID.
I never said that the economy was doing well. Streaming services don't cost that much, and a lot less than movie tickets. So people go for the cheaper option, and sitting at home, watching a movie on a streaming service costs less than parking, cinema tickets and cinema food and drinks.
I bet if streaming didn't exist, movies would be doing better in the cinema. It is the number one reason for movies struggling. Movies not taking risks with original ideas is another.

As a rule, I don't follow movies in production, but it's still a surprise to find they hadn't even started on the new Blade movie. I assumed it was coming out soon, if anything. It certainly doesn't bode well, which is unfortunate as they set it up to be the next big thing in The Eternals (which was a flop, granted).
I have next to 0 expectations for Borderlands. I was already dubious from the start (being as it's a video game movie, those are notorious for being mediocre at best), but once they announced Kevin Hart as Roland my expectations went from being in shallow waters, to plunging down an undersea cliff. Roland is an average height stoic type. Kevin Hart's whole schtick is that he's a short funny guy that often shows insecurities centred around his height. I just can't see him doing the 'serious ex-soldier' routine, and if they lean into his height and jokes like they tend to do in movies he's in, the character won't be Roland anymore. I was disappointed that they didn't stick with Claptrap's actual VA too (though I"m generally OK with Jack Black, it's just another 'insert recognizable celebrity at the expense of the actual character' tactic). Offhand, the only actor who actually might work for the character was Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis. I could actually see her pulling off an older Tannis, at least. That's another thing though; the actor and character ages are all over the place. Basically, it has been mismanaged from the word go and I won't be surprised if even the costumes end up underwhelming (the silhouettes have never inspired much confidence), to the point that 'I've seen better homemade cosplay' is a claim that can be backed up with evidence. I"ll be happy to be proven wrong, but at this point it's looking like you're better betting on NFTs making a comeback.

A lot of these suffer from the same problem which is executives or people in power making strange decisions finally catching up to already outdated and old fashioned ideas. Snow White is a decent example of something that would have done well in 2012-2016 when people wanted more token representation in any form just to have something and when criticism could be (nay, should be) ignored because it was hugely exaggerated and over the top. Now, people have some self respect and standards, they don't need to be preached to by multi billion dollar corporations on how to be nice or to 'represent' them as if they cannot relate to someone of a different race or gender who displays human characteristics. Now people are insulted when they are pandered to sacrificing good writing and characters for empty, shallow point scoring characters who serve one purpose to look good while not actually being good.

There is no way the Mad Max/Furiosa movie will bomb. That's just insane. Watch the making of Fury Road sometime, when even the actors thought it was shit. The director knows how to cut a movie. If George Miller made a 90 minute movie of Joe Biden taking a dump, it would be the most action-packed movie of the year.
Scream 7 will do well, only because there is no competition in horror. The Saw, Nunn and Paranoia Activities movies proves that point. It wont get awards, but it will double its costs. The rest of the list is likely doomed.
Kraven may find an audience as an ultraviolent movie, borderline super hero movie. Just look at Venom; horrible movie, but made money with the super hero violence. Kraven will no doubt lean heavy into the Boyz and Invincible audience, but then again, Morbius did awful. Though that was more to do with campy writing, than bad directing. As long as Kraven stays away from the cheesy humor, it will do well. Not great, but it will make a bit more than it cost to make it. What is sad is, that the success of this movie will determine if we get a Spider-man sequel for Kraven's Last Hunt. They have been trying get Last Hunt off the ground for decades. I would hate to see that fail. If you are not familiar with Kraven's Last Hunt, its the End Game equivalent for Spider-man as the hero is utterly defeated and will no doubt be a massive money maker if it wasn't for the required pre-staging it requires to introduce Kraven and give Spider-man stability before Kraven destroys him.
The Lion King Pre-qual will do well because of its target audience of black families, and also appeals to white families, and that it isn't shoehorning black actors into traditionally white parts. The movie itself is likely boring and unoriginal, but parents will take their kids to it to occupy them for 3 hours and not be bored themselves. Just look at the Little Mermaid live remake. I could care less about the controversy behind it, I just couldn't stand the boring story, and crappy CGI, yet the Little Mermaid made money. Not Disney money, but the type of money that Paramount would be happy with.
The Snow White live action remake is a big question mark. There is a lot controversy behind it, and that CGI photo didn't make me feel better about it. They look like the 1990s Garbage Pail Kids. If that's what the dwarves look like after CGI, they should have kept the stand-ins. Either they make animation corrections, via the Sonic Movie, or they use camera tricks via Lord of the Rings, but if they keep what they got, it's going to give kids nightmares. Regardless, it will break even for the same reason the Lion King prequel will.
Madam Web has a chance if it goes supernatural thriller and stays away from the Super Hero genre. Unfortunately, i doubt that will happen.
Blade only works for the same reason Kraven may work. I have less hope than I do for Kraven. When the original Blade came out, there was no good Superhero movies outside Batman, and it didn't feel like a superhero movie. It's inherently bad writing and has very little going for it that audiences haven't seen before in other vampire movies. I doubt it will do anything we haven't already seen the first Blade movies or the Underworld franchise. Not only that, but Blade has no good source material. The new Blade movie is being made solely for nostalgia of the original film. This doesn't mean a great writer, and decent director can't turn it around, but judging by Marvel's recent entries with mediocre characters, I don't have my hopes up. It just doesn't have enough originality. This would have been better served as a TV series, where they can build the character, rather than throw him at the screen like confetti at a Rip Taylor show.
The Beekeeper will make money only because it was cheaply made and it stars Jason Stratham. Don't get me wrong, its going to suck, but it has no competition, and its a dude movie, just like every Jason Stratham movie. One day Stratham's deal with Satan will expire and he will stop making money off these shitty films.
Distant, it's too early to tell. Its sounds bad, but think how bad the pitch meeting for Interstellar or Contact went? Sometimes it works on film.
Regardless, whether they make money or not depends more on when they are released, than if they are good or not. There has been plenty of great movies buried by big budget films, and complete shit movies banking by releasing when there is no competition. This also includes genre. There are so few kid's movies, they always make money, especially when the kids are out of school and parents are looking for something to distract them with. Similarly, Horror movies are so rare and cheap to make that they always make double their costs.
As to my pick for most disappointing Disney movie, easily Indian Jones and the Dial of Destiny. It was a crappy cash in, that looked like it was written by throwing darts at board with fan fiction posted to it. This is definitely how Zack Snyder makes his movies.

Blade is something that could benefit from going back to it's roots: a certain comic called 'Tomb of Dracula', where a bunch of vampire hunters collect to take on the Drac by ending the atlantean-age magical 'curse' that permits extra-dimensional 'vampires' to exist on Earth in the first place.
Paralleling the grouping of vampires that exist with the grouping of hunters, Vanessa van Helsing, that guy in the wheelchair, and incidentally Blade, could be successful.
As usual, just permitting a real writer to actually write a story that deep might actually work.
