Yep, Van Halen 1 is in my top 10 debut albums ever, Eddie sounded new, fresh and so powerful, he had the band with him to make an ultimate statement. Do the whole album, the only way for this one, every song is a banger. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎶
When Van Halen 1 came out, it knocked the guitar world in a way that hadn't been done since Jimi. Playing something that nobody else was doing or could do. People tried, but genius like that can't be duplicated.
That whole first Van Halen album is one of the greatest debut albums in rock history along with Boston. I wish you guys would do that whole album. But if you do eruption from that, not the 13-minute guitar solo that everyone is reacting to but just on the original first album, you absolutely have to continue it on into their cover of The Kinks song You Really Got Me. It was meant to be that way on the record album and that's how the radio stations played it. And it is such a fantastic transition.
Yes, this is a cover...the original was recorded and released in 1953 by John Brim.....as usual, VH does yet another great cover......and that is DLR on the acoustic to start it off...he could, indeed, play a little guitar...and harmonica! Second to the last song on that fantastic debut album!
Oh that was priceless gents!!! “He’s the plumber!!” Lol. For something completely different from their catalog, but in the “old school” camp. Try listening to “Big Bad Bill” from the Diver Down album. They had Jan Van Halen (their father) play clarinet on that one. Very unique for the time. But, captures what you recognized in this song, their homage/influence of old school music. Hope you give it a listen. Thanks again guys for a fun episode.
You guys crack me up! Love this channel for so many reasons…your collective knowledge, sense of humor, your ability to articulate what you know and feel in such an easy way….thank y’all for the reaction! Great work as always…😊
When this album debut in the late 70's it was waaay beyond what was out... Eddie's guitar playing was something new and outrageous for certain... the entire album!
One of the greatest first album released by any band ever. This album changed the direction of metal guitar. Every song on this album is a banger. I was fortunate enough to see Eddie and the original Van Halen lineup at least 15 times including the US Festival in 1983. I agree with your other commenter, this album deserves an entire listen. RIP to the master shredder Eddie Van Halen.
@AirplayBeats BTW original version John Brim- Ice Cream Man circa 1953!! Another cover of a blackbkuesman the public is unaware of, though props to VH for always making their covers original. th-cam.com/video/-FXzfXBHXW8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=S9CpTMpA8XY9rYZo
One of my favourites from VH, thanks. It always reminds of a time when I lived in a house with four roommates, all of whom liked to party. And during the summer the ice cream man would come by at around 11 pm. And all the stoners on the block would throw their flip flops on and shuffle out to get a cone or a banana split, including all five of us.
Agreed! Yeah, old school rock and roll, but when that album hit the racks it was certainly not old school rock, it was fresh, and burning hot!!! It was such a new sound that it just blows us all away. They shifted rock’s direction with this album’s release, and almost every song on it is great.
Just got into HS when VH I came out! It was like a totally new genre of rock music coming out of the late 70s. I can still hear a kid talking about VH after he saw VH open for Journey and Montrose. Incidently, the future VH singer Sammy Hagar was the lead singer for the Montrose band.
I remember getting high with my aunt who was five years older than me and she had just gotten a brand new Mustang second generation and I went with her and her bestie to go out driving around her small town one night. This was in 78-79, somewhere around there, we pulled off the side of the road and sparked up a doob, she said "You gotta hear this band, they're wild" and popped in Halen 1. I was starting to rush off the weed and that booming bass of Running with the Devil came on and I was absolutely enthralled and in love. I could not get enough of that album or Halen II. One of the best times I remember as a teen 🤟🖤💙❤🔥
I see 9 replies that say our favorite reactors should do the whole Self-Titled "Van Halen" album. You've done "Runnin' With the Devil", "Jamie's Cryin' ", "Ain't Talkin' About Love" and now "Ice Cream Man"....and you did the live "Eruption"...I should know, I've watched 'em too many times...lol. Let's Go...."You Really Got Me'" is next and then "I'm the One." 🔥🔥🤘🤘
Do the studio album version of Eruption. It’s sharper, clearer and more concise than extended later versions. Easier for noobs to VH to process. Besides, later versions built on and played in and around that structure. It should be heard first.
Drop Dead Legs is another really funky Van Halen song, sooo good and a bit different from what you may think of as Van Halen. From their huge 1984 album.
This song was cool in so many ways. One of the few tracks that Eddie featured some acoustic guitar playing and as you stated put his flavoring on some old time rock n roll melody. But for me this song really highlights Dave's vocal talents. His signature inflections, tone, pitch, modulation and vocal range were brilliant. And his little Elvis impersonation "to sassify", there at the end is just so much fun.
The fact that in a couple years the original group broke up never to truly get back together makes this even more special.Time, looking through the eye of infinity never lies. Classic.
great reaction. "put that stink on it" : ) . One of the few songs on their first album w/ a guitar overdub on the 2nd solo, so much of it was just Eddy on 1 track, in your left ear. Ted Templeman produced it I think, he did the same thing on the Montrose 1st album, Ronnie Montrose was panned all the way to one side on most/many tracks. Trivia, history.
This is swing music, like a throwback to the 40’s. Which is why Roth is so good on this. He’s what’s called a scat singer. That whole scooby-do-wop sound is what David Lee Roth is.
Eddie Van Halen always gets praised for his crazy lead guitar playing, but he was a beastly rhythm guitarist. Tone always rocked you down to the bones.
One of the shows I saw these guys David Lee Roth stood on the stage bye himself with an acoustic guitar and explained the relevance of this song and why they did it. Fun song still holds up today.
Honestly one of the greatest covers ever. Great work. Obviously nobody thinks of VH as a cover band, but were also probably the greatest cover band ever. At least studio album wise.
Now think about it 12,13 years old girls in shirts, privet school Brooklyn. Every guy and girl loved Van Hale. Like David Lee Roth said we were all sexy he said I made y'all all sexier. What a guy. Showed us young men how to have swagger. Keeping it real.
Van Halen with Roth! He was one heck of a showman at their concerts. High energy and always clowning onstage. I saw them twice, their album tours for VH2 and Women and Children First. Great memories! I was in 9th & 10th grades....the parties were lit!
Van Halen with DLR and Sammy Hagar were each great in their own way. But whenever these early VH tunes come on, I cannot help but sit back, smile and think back of my high school days. This is a great song from a great album. Thanks for reviewing it!
As a young'un listening to this I was spoiled rotten: I took for granted that all virtuoso solos would be as melodic and tasty as Eddie Van Halen's.... I had no idea how musical he was, no matter the tempo...
Rare 🤔 David Lee Roth is playing acoustic guitar on this song ..... he's always a front man singing on stage performances ..... But he does play on a couple of songs in the studio 😉🍻🍻✌️❤️
Van Halen 1 deserves an entire album reaction. It plays like a greatest hits.
Agreed!!!
Ditto!@@lisarhae9692
Yeah, I’ve been asking for a VH1 reaction too from La & Che…
Yep.
Hell yeah ✌️
"Take Your Whiskey Home" is my favorite Van Halen deep track.
Yeah, that's a great one!
Yes. Agreed.
Outta Love Again
YES!
Michael Anthony 1 of the most underrated bassist!!
And his backup vocals is underrated, but is part of creates that unique Van Halen sound even thorugh the changing lead vocalists
He could sing his ass off too!
My favorite Van Halen song!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
💋💋💋💋
Originally recorded in 1953 by Chicago blues man John Brim. Love this version. Van Halen so reminds me of my early teens. Fun times.
Bet he never heard a guitar go off like this, tho.
Shirley he didn't have the same lyrics??
@@dizastro5437Without the blues this music wouldn't exist. It's the roots that bare the fruits.

“Fair Warning” is a brilliant album.
The debut album is pure fire. Their best offering imo
When Van Halen 1 came out, it knocked the guitar world in a way that hadn't been done since Jimi. Playing something that nobody else was doing or could do. People tried, but genius like that can't be duplicated.
True that, he set the tone for the 80s hair bands and speed metal as metal.
Totally
IN MY TOP FIVE VAN HALEN SONGS❤❤❤❤❤
Absolute killer solo

Led Zeppelin 1 & Black Sabbath are as good as any debut.
Boston-lol
Once read someone call them the Def Leppard of the 70s 😅😂
Van Halen deserves the album treatment!
Agreed

Second to the last song on that fantastic debut album!
Best Birthday gift ever, thank you La & Che.
Van Halen forever
Happy Birthday!!
@@AirplayBeats Thank you guys, yours is the best music reaction channel on YT, period.

Van Halen 1 Whole album reaction!!!!! Desert island classic, every song is great!
I smiled so big when I saw y'all's reaction! Eddie, Dave, Alex, and Michael ruled!

Eventually you'll get to Hot for Teacher, then you'll get to hear how much of a beast Alex Van Halen is on drums.
You can’t go wrong with VanHalen.
Y'all need to do the whole album... Killer Old school Rock and roll. One of the Greatest debut albums ever to come out.

Song is so amazing...guitar solo from hell just puts this over the moon. No one better. VH in their prime was an unstoppable force.

Can you imagine, 6 yrs old with Elton John then at middle with Van Halen ! and all that great music in between. Thanks for bring back my childhood.

Probably my favorite on the album...Michael Anthony's bass tone is so phat under that lead
I’ve sang this on stage a number of times, fun song to show off to!

If you want acoustic, might I suggest "Spanish Fly."
Along with led zeppelin, a great debut album.
