Curt should move back to his hometown, become a phys-ed teacher, and make his way back to the Major Leagues. That would make a pretty good tv show. Maybe hbo would pick it up.
To be fair, Kingdom of Amalur got very positive reviews. I played some of it, not my type of game, but I could see fans of that kinda genre liking it. I really think the fact he was trying to do such a robust rpg on the consoles hurt it badly.
I'm guessing we can look forward to VideOnA taking this audio and putting in the pictures for everybody. I'm playing along with the website, but I'd rather kick my feet up and just enjoy it, you know?
The game is called kingdoms of amalur and they considered it a failure in a week. If they just waited a bit it would have been successful just by word of mouth. VERY underated game. A remastered version called rereckoning was released in 2019. Well worth the money.
@@RmnGnzlz yes i did play it and I know its not a skyrim clone but it is of the same genre. The point i was making is that kingdoms of amalur is a much more linear, 'faux' open world rpg than a game that ppl who are a fan of the genre already got to play months before. Thats not to say that it doesn't have a niche audience but there is nothing that koa does better than skyrim or even fable for that matter. I feel like koa gets judged from the perspective of "this game wasn't bad enough to close a studio" instead of this game was fine but forgettable.
He owed the state of Rhode Island like 75 million. There’s no way he got out of that hole. He sold everything (including rights to the game) to settle his bankruptcy…he made nothing.
Because you're probably not a boring asshole. Athletes have a lot of money, but usually no personality. Btw I hope you read this and didn't die in the 9 years since you made this comment. Thoughts and prayers.
naw the game was fine. the problem was he was pouring way too much money into productions values, for an intellectual property that didnt have any buzzworthy momentum. the portal series is a good example of how to do it right. he paid to have Todd McFarlane write the story for him, and the man certainly doesnt lend his service cheap. I'm sure he could have hired a writer who was just as good, but not as well-known, to do it for a fraction of the cost.
McFarlane did the art for the game, R.A. Salvatore wrote the story. The problem is he paid BOTH of those guy, whose services don't come cheap. The real issue here is not Reckoning though, it was the money he dumped into a MMO.
Here is what I think. He's my age and like me he's been a old school gamer since day one. I think he had a dream to make a game and he got about 95% complete with what would of been the greatest MMO out there and perhaps made billions of dollars in subscription fees. He took a big gamble on $100-200 million opportunity and it fell flat. I've seen Project Copernicus and folks it's freaking incredible. His game Kingdoms of Amalur, which was a single player Fantasy game upon which Copernicus world was created was fantastic. Todd McFarlane did the art direction, RA Salvatore one of the greatest fantasy authors of our time and Ken Rolston the man behind Elder Scrolls success were part of this project. Amalur is a great game and the combat and had they not run out of funding the following MMO would of been right up there with Blizzards World of Warcraft. Someone should pick up the work he started and finish the work.
I would say throwing all your money in a video game is not conservative. Curt may claim that but actions speak louder than repo truck beeps...... Nice to meet an O and A fan though...
"Fiscal conservative" is a word thrown out when someone wants to push typical republican crap but are too ashamed to openly be in bed with evangelists (they will still vote for a crazy evangelist as long as he's got an 'R' next to his name). And it means absolutely nothing but "austerity for the working class, more tax cuts for my bracket". The idea that someone who every month blows $5000 on guns and loses $50,0000 spitting at blackjack dealers is a "fiscal conservative" just proves what an utter crock of shit it all is.
I actually bought that game when it first came out because it was advertised as being co-written by the guy who co-wrote Fallout and elders scrolls, it wasn't bad but wasn't very memorable either.
They made a good game. I think being new, they spent too much making it and the market was probably already flooded. Timing is HUGE in video game releases also
The game actually sold pretty well. Especially considering that it was a first effort from a brand new studio. It was successful. That success made Curt think he can’t fail. So he took all the income from the game and all the financial help he had to start the studio and invested it all into their next project(which was massive in scope and way beyond what the studio was capable of). And the rest is history.
@@souldry I dont think that timeline is correct, he spent money on developing an MMO from 2006-2012 while also creating this game. It became clear though that this game was their only sellable product and all hopes rested on it.
Its like a movie that goes way over budget and takes too long to complete. Maybe the script is pretty good, and the cinematography is great. But if there's no market for it... it will be a failure. Should've not invested in only one or two games. Not if the point is to have a viable game company.
So Opie is saying he and Curt were close when Curt was playing for the Red Wings and Opie was on radio in rochester, wow and everyone went right over another one of his bullshit
Like Jim and Sam said, it was a great game, but completely unnecessary and appeared unoriginal. I just started playing it free on PSN, It's not something I'd buy.
The game was bought and rereleased by THQ Nordic so it was a decent title. Curt just was way too reckless and dug himself too deep. His title would have to become as big as Minecraft if he hoped to ever break even with is bad financial decisions, and with so many other games in the market under the same Genre like WOW and EverQuest, he had no chance.
It’s a single player game so it’s more comparable to Skyrim(which came out three months before Reckoning) or the Fable series. The game suffered from the fact that it was extremely generic, not a bad game just not able to compete with Skyrim and others in the same genre
No one is forcing you to listen, but you do because the show is awesome and you love it. Now go make me a sandwich you watery little woman. If you don't know by now that nothing is sacred on this show then you're not a real fan anyway.
Sorry.. it looked like a shitty business model. They sunk all their money (and Rhode Island's) into developing two very expensive games that took way too long to bring to market. They should've operated more like a movie studio.. make the guaranteed hit (maybe a simple, but well designed sports game?) for a quick and easy return and then you can invest in the long-term labor of love of the big fantasy game.
