My first hearing of this, and I'm completely blown away, on so many levels. Been a fan of JD since the days they were still going - thought I had a good grasp of their opus - but this is an eye (ear & heart) opener. Jesus wept - it was like being there. Big ups to all y'alls (isn't that the way young people speak these days?) who had a hand in making this available to us. Thank ‘Joy Division!’
What an incredible version of this fantastic song. The desperation and despair in this is truly suffocating. Amazing!! They said there were 800 people at this gig. It sounds like there were 3 from the sounds at the end of the song.
Interesting description: Sept 28, 1979 - The Factory, Manchester This was the group's final gig at the Russell Club location before it shut down for the first time. The club was jammed with 800 people. Before Joy Division went on stage Ian had a seizure and was badly shaken, but he gave an excellent performance. The gig was marred by some violence when Peter Hook jumped off the stage with his bass in pursuit of some thugs who were hassling the audience.
There are some serious lyrical variations in this version...The great escape line is pretty haunting. cant make out the line before it 100%, something about my bother toured or torn? and I took the Blame.
The lyrics could be like this (not 100% sure with every word): Afraid to walk, afraid to look behind Afraid to talk, afraid I'll fall in line Hoped I find some friends to maybe lead astray Maybe make some plans to achieve the one with day (?) Can you help me? Can you spare the time? No apologies for all these thoughts were mine My brother taught I had to take the blame Now I'm sitting here to make my great escape I can't see why all these complications I can't see why all these dislocations No family life just makes me feel uneasy Lying (living?) here inside this colony In this colony In this colony In this colony In this colony May god and his wisdom take you by the hand God and his wisdom made you understand May god and his wisdom take you by the hand God and his wisdom made you understand God and his wisdom took you by the hand Your god and his wisdom made you understand Your god and his wisdom took you by the hand Your god and his wisdom made you understand In this colony In this colony In this colony In this colony
Wow, nice work! The lyrics are pretty clear at the beginning. Quite different from the studio version. I'd love to hear your other work from the same gig.
Yeah, I know. I got that description from joydiv . org (google "final gig at the russell club" and it comes up in the first 3-4 results) so I can't vouch for the accuracy of it.

This is one of the most powerful and desperate songs ever composed in rock history.
..I agree...totally...
Close 2nd would be Transmission for it's psychotic menacing lyrics and mayhem

When you hear how desperate and powerful this sound is, I can understand, my jaw would have just dropped from what I’d have listened to
One of my fave JD songs - really appreciate this. Thanks.
Saw joy Division at their beginning believe when I say Ian Curtis was incredible.

DEAR god and his wisdom...
@@loosethefeelingI’d say it would be “My brother told (not taught) I had to take the blame”, which is interesting, since Ian had no brother.
@@Hwral “taught” would be a bit more profound, but “told” would of course also fit. And maybe he meant his inner brother?
@@loosethefeeling I think this song is about Rudolf Hess's flight to Scotland. It was a last ditch effort to broker peace between Germany and England.
Raw, desperate, hopeless, from the bottom of his heart you can feel it
...a gem...waiting to be discovered....thanks...

Great sound all the same and its unusual to hear Ian using different lyrics cheers

Thanks for sharing, great live mix. Yet again, we hear Ian Curtis experimenting with alternate lyrics, why not!

“To make my great escape”. He had made up his mind. Sad but honest.
Great!
Joy no was a band punk, but the punks LOVE this band !!
Warsaaaaaaaaaaaawrgh!

Gotta love Ian's inner outrage for the brutalities colonialism spread throughout the world by the imperial desires of Kings and Queens.
i was only 17
