I love the close-up on the trophy that made it look bigger than it is. That gave me a laugh when you picked it up. I really enjoyed this series! If you do another, you should give players a practice round, so the real thing will have more strategy. Perhaps even a quick highlight of the practice round to get people into it.
+OSR It was funny! It looked like giant hands were grabbing a normal sized trophy! But you can see the trophy on the shelf behind them all the time. I just noticed it after the video ended
As a tournament organiser, I have to take issue with this format. Double elimination means you have to lose twice to be knocked out; no exceptions. Getting to grand finals in the winners side is a big advantage, because you have to be beaten _twice_ to lose. So while I was rooting for Emma the whole time, Hannah should have had another chance.
+LimeGreenTeknii I think for beginners it's easier, because the aim of getting 5-in-a-line is simpler to imagine. But it is supposed to be a 50-50 game.
+LimeGreenTeknii We did a lot of testing on this: with inexperienced players, it's about 50/50. Chaos seems to get an advantage after a few games, but it likely won't last!
+Tom Scott I wonder if a modified "pie rule" would be useful: one player puts down, let's say, three pieces, then the other player decides who will be Order and who will be Chaos. Then the player who put down the first few pieces puts down one more piece, and from there they just take turns like in the "regular" game. If that would give too great an advantage to the first player, then let the second player put down a piece immediately after choosing her role.
+Robert Lozyniak Easier rule: coin toss winner can choose side or to go first, that way each player gets an advantage: choosing side or choosing turn order
+Robert Lozyniak Actually, this kind of rule is needed when both player only controls one color and both want their color to form five in a row -- I'm talking about Renju, a modified version of Gomoku. The winning move Emma plays around 4:22 formed a pattern known as "double alive triples" on red chips, which is a winning pattern of second player in Renju. (Also notes that Renju bans the first player to win by "double alive triples," "double fours," and "overline," which may give some considerations to the rule of this game.)
There's a part of me that would have been interested in seeing more attempts at each game, so that the players had a chance to learn from (or possibly overcompensate for) previous mistakes- because the metagames for some of these would be fascinating to see.
+Mercenary Pen I agree. I'd really like to see all contestants play all the games too. I think it would make more of their different strengths and weaknesses. Revisiting old games in a new series runs the risk that some contestants come prepared, when i'd much rather see people learning on camera.
+davidbod "Overlong"? Maybe if you really don't care for board games. To put it in context, how long is a televised match of (name your favorite sport)?
Or for context closer to the games being produced, maybe compare episode length with Wil Wheaton's tabletop series- sure, it isn't an exact match, but it's a fairly similar niche.
Robert Lozyniak I believe the idea was to make these videos short and snappy, in the typical TH-cam style. We'd rather they're a bit too short than outstay their welcome.
thank you all involved for getting Emma Blackery to say 'You can put it anywhere you like'! seriously Tom this was very fun and I'd like to see more of it!
+Tijl Peters That's part of the reason I did it! This channel is meant to be all sorts of different series and projects: I'm trying not to get typecast! :)
+Tom Scott Neat! If so, might you be interested in a slightly different topic for one of your videos? The school I attend has a completely different school system, and is very progressive. Tell me if you're interested, I'll e-mail you about some details if you are.
Usually in double elimination tournaments, the last game is 2/3 and the winner's bracket champion gets one game head start in the finals. The point of the double elimination tournament is that you have to lose two games in order to be eliminated but the way it was done here the game developer lost only one game (the same as the champion), yet she was eliminated.
+davidbod Yes but.. you could've made it like in other rounds and just make this show a 2/3 right?.. well, maybe not with this particular game since it would've taken too long.
You should always have the option to lose once and not be eliminated. Even if it's in the final. If you do lose in the final and haven't lost before, you play the final again. Otherwise there is no reward for not losing previously. That's how Double Elimination works. I think that would be more fair.
I loved this series so much which. I just hate that the unbeaten finalist is the only one who doesn't get a chance to continue after losing. It's so unfair. If you do a double elimination, you should carry it all the way.
+King Kasper Get the TH-cam+ extension for Firefox or Chrome, it allows you to flip playlists yourself. Its an absolute life-saver for binge-watching TH-cam series.
Mega props to Hanna for being so gracious in defeat and even permitting which kind of victory Emma fancied. And even when Emma had no answer, Hannah went for what she thought would be most convienient for Emma. And besides, such a cool game! I might make one myself.
I feel like the games from this season in order from the best to the worst are: 1. Order and Chaos 2. Black Hole 3. Weighted War 4. Tumblin-Dice 5. Quizz Buzz 6. Rock Paper Scissors Hammer Helmet
Awesome series! I'll chime in with yet another "please make a series 2!" Also, it sadly took me until now to realize this is what you were asking about possible TH-camrs who are OK being on camera for a colab some while back.
I would love to see a second series with double the contestants. All those games are good for an encore, and I get the sense that David can generate many more. Quiz-buzz and Black Hole were my personal favorites, but I liked every installment of this series (both mentally and electronically).
As a person who spent a buncha time figuring out (and subsequently forgetting) noughts and crosses strategy despite it being a solved game which I could just look up, I love this. It's like noughts and crosses but with some Othello and ten times the stress. I really really wanna play this right now
I would *_LOVE_* to see a second series of this
Nobody here
As would I
I love how the cheap, plastic trophy says, _"cheap plastic trophy"_ on it. that's hilarious
u got 2 good enough comments that you have both of yours as top 2 on top comments
I love the close-up on the trophy that made it look bigger than it is. That gave me a laugh when you picked it up.

+OSR I love the way it says "cheap plastic trophy" on it. xD
I only now realized that the trophy was in the background on the shelf the entire time.
you mean made it look *ALOT* bigger
This game is fascinating! Where do you get them from?
+xisumavoid I think they came up with the games themselves; most of them at least.
+S S Phil - All Aboard! Some are from David's research, some are his invention. :)
Always cool to see you commenting in other youtubers videos!
probably from boardgamegeek.com (i remember seeing order & chaos there, and you probably will be able to find the others there too)
hello ex eye sumo vee oid
This had a good narrative arc. The first loser was the final winner!
Maybe the real prize was the subscribers you made on the way...
Not going to lie this series was great.
I love how this is such a quiet game, yet Steven is flipping out on the couch
SEASON 2! SEASON 2!
(I love the format, really takes up my short attention span to its edge.)
This could be a series on its own and unify the entire TH-cam community with board games.
Hear hear
Aye aye
Thee aproves of thy's idea
I SO WANT TO SEE MORE OF THESE!!! THEY'RE SO FUN!!!!!!!

Definitely need more of these - loved the selection of participants too
"I don't care where you put it. You can put it wherever you like"
- Emma Blackery, 2016
Congratulations Emma! =D
It looks like order would be so much easier to play as than chaos.
+LimeGreenTeknii I think for beginners it's easier, because the aim of getting 5-in-a-line is simpler to imagine. But it is supposed to be a 50-50 game.

+Mercenary Pen I think that may make some of the videos overlong, but no reason why we couldn't revisit some of these games in Season 2...
+Mercenary Pen I agree. I'd really like to see all contestants play all the games too. I think it would make more of their different strengths and weaknesses.

seriously Tom this was very fun and I'd like to see more of it!
I love how we never got any idea how big the trophy was until you gave it to Emma. xD
I hope this gets a second series :D
it's weird watching the finally of a series, 3 years later, after just stumbling upon it
Same. I'm also enjoying Garage Games.
Great series of mini shows. Loved seeing some new games and listening to the commentary. Thanks for putting this together
That was great, I'd love to see a second season! Must've been quite a risk taking this different turn from your usual videos though
+Tijl Peters That's part of the reason I did it! This channel is meant to be all sorts of different series and projects: I'm trying not to get typecast! :)

Tom Scott Omg MOAR PLZ with Matt Parker, Brady Haran, Vi Hart, and Jessi from Animal Wonders Montana!
This was a fantastic series, Tom! Did you shoot all of the matches in one sitting?
+Matthew S All in one day! (That's part of the reason they didn't have much advance time to think of strategies…!)
***** I'd love to see this become a regular thing. I look forward to testing these games out myself, they look really challenging!
+Matthew Seconded.
Really hope you do this again, the entire series was really fun to watch.
This was an excellent series. Thank you for making it!

+Lightn0x As I noted elsewhere, this was because we needed to have a 6 show structure, not (6 or 7) shows.
+davidbod Yes but.. you could've made it like in other rounds and just make this show a 2/3 right?.. well, maybe not with this particular game since it would've taken too long.
Please do season 2! This is one of the GREATEST thing on TH-cam right now. For me, anyway :P
+Assani PyrZern Duongsaa For me too. I loved this SO much.
This was absolutely amazing, really awesome to watch, definitely hope there's a second series of this! Great job Tom.
I've never heard of this game, it sounds awesome!
+Phil Kmetz MTB I feel like all of these games are new. They all resemble some existing game, but with a new twist that adds a lot.
+FF Fanatic Yeah, I felt they were really interesting and well designed. Props to Bodycombe.
+fdagpigj E We tried :)
It's almost as if they were designed by a professional game designer...
Awesome series! Really enjoyed this one and thanks for introducing me to Emma's channel, it's great!

This was an absolutely fantastic series! Loved every episode!
That was really fun to watch, and it came out of nowhere too! Thanks for the content!
I really liked these videos and the production quality is great, you have really done a good job
That was incredibly entertaining and I now want to play every single game that you showed :)
+DanTheStripe blackhole-coderunner.rhcloud.com/ for the blackhole game.
Loved the show, started watching emma's channel from the first episode, and loving it as well. Hoping for a second season!
This is so underrated, and i can't imagine why

The "cheap plastic trophy" made me crack up.

This really cool! and superb quality! Season 2 please!!!
loved this series, hope there's another!
I loved this series so much which. I just hate that the unbeaten finalist is the only one who doesn't get a chance to continue after losing. It's so unfair. If you do a double elimination, you should carry it all the way.
I loved this series soooo much!
can't wait for series 2 :)
I love all you content. Can't wait to see what you come out with next.
all these games are sooo good!
Fascinating game, like all of them 👍
I would be great if you flipped the playlist. It goes from 6-1 now
+King Kasper Get the TH-cam+ extension for Firefox or Chrome, it allows you to flip playlists yourself. Its an absolute life-saver for binge-watching TH-cam series.
Woot ty!
Wow, these were some great games, I will be playing these with friends.
Please do more episodes!!!
That was tremendous fun! If possible, I would love to see a second series of this.
Mega props to Hanna for being so gracious in defeat and even permitting which kind of victory Emma fancied. And even when Emma had no answer, Hannah went for what she thought would be most convienient for Emma.
And besides, such a cool game! I might make one myself.
This was an amazing series and I absolutely loved those small little games!
That order/chaos game in the end seems particularly interesting to me :)
I feel like the games from this season in order from the best to the worst are:
1. Order and Chaos
2. Black Hole
3. Weighted War
4. Tumblin-Dice
5. Quizz Buzz
6. Rock Paper Scissors Hammer Helmet
What about quiz buzz?
Nicolino Will Ops, forgot about that one. Between Tumblin-Dice and Rock Paper Scissors Hammer Hat.
I got far too into this entire series. There better be a follow up at some point.
I loved this series. Great fun.
Wow, more these please!
Such a great series
loved this series
Really enjoyed this series, a fun change of pace. =D
I'm... I'm... not ready for it to end!
I really like this series! please do more!!
This is amazing! Keep it up. I will definitely watch season 2!
Awesome series! I would love to see a season 2 :D
all of these games are really great. I'm going to have to try to teach these to my little sister.
That trophy was amazing. I also loved the entire series, and would definitely watch another season.
This was a really good series. Definitely do more!
This was really good! Would love more :D
love this series
There is a "that's what she said" joke there somewhere.
is it 3:37 by any chance?...
+Edward Sim or 5:14 :)
3:38 😂
was gonna say it.
GlassCurtain haha didn't see that :)
I really hope there'll be a series 2
I'm hoping for citation needed series 5
These types of competitions are great! keep it up please! 😄
I really enjoyed this! Well done Emma!
That was amazing :D I loved the series.
Loved it! Please make new ones!
These games are all brilliant. I wish I knew about them when I was younger.
I absolutely adored this tourney of unfamiliar games with familiar rules! I will watch the next season if you have the will to make another! :)
Great series everyone! Hoping for more :)
I been having fun playing this online with friends in minecraft. Thanks for introducing me to it!!!
Really liked where this series was going, with a bit of refinement a next season would surely be fantastic!
I absolutely adore Emma, but I would've never guessed her to win; this was super exciting! Season two please!
Great video, great game, and great series overall!
Please make season 2! This is such fun to watch!
"I've never won anything" oh Emma, your genuine joy made this video :D
This was such a good series
Great series! I'd love to see some more.
That was the best game so far! Great job everyone! I'd love to see another series, with at least Emma coming back as the reigning champ!
I need more of this
This show was amazing! Mooooore
Awesome series! I'll chime in with yet another "please make a series 2!" Also, it sadly took me until now to realize this is what you were asking about possible TH-camrs who are OK being on camera for a colab some while back.
This was quite unexpected. Well done!
This show was great, I really enjoyed it
These games seem so interesting and fun please give us more thanks :D
I'm actually really happy emma won, I discovered her because of this series and already am a huge fan of hers
Great series Tom!
P.S. Videos in playlist are in backwards order D.S.
Oh, I'm gonna miss this. Hopefully there's a second one
Congratulations to Emma!
(And am I the only one who thinks she has a really "cute" voice?)
Plus, thank you for the series Tom. Exhilarating, it was.
it took me a while to realize they both play both colors...
I would love to see a second series with double the contestants. All those games are good for an encore, and I get the sense that David can generate many more. Quiz-buzz and Black Hole were my personal favorites, but I liked every installment of this series (both mentally and electronically).
This should be on television. Maybe I'll finally watch tv.
As a person who spent a buncha time figuring out (and subsequently forgetting) noughts and crosses strategy despite it being a solved game which I could just look up, I love this. It's like noughts and crosses but with some Othello and ten times the stress. I really really wanna play this right now
