Its less copy and more of an import like the Mass Effect Games if you've played those. If you beat Infection (or any of the other 2) and save your game at the end you are given an "Import Flag" This basically means all your experience, items, weapons, and what not carry over to the next game. Otherwise you can start any of the 4 games brand new (i have no idea why you would) and it'll give you mid ground level, some items, and okay gear but you'll need to do all the side quests to recruit characters or for certain items in that volume (yes you can do game 1 side quests in the 4th game with a few minor exceptions and most of those are secret hidden dungeons).
