- Kaivalya Kumar Gurav (b. 1963) is a gifted vocalist and considered the next icon of Kirana Gharana. His grandfather Pt Ganapatrao Gurav was one of the earliest disciples of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan. Kaivalya Kumar was initiated into classical music at an early age and groomed by his father Pt Sangameshwar Gurav, another noted exponent of the Kirana Gharana.
Kaivalya Kumar's ragadaari is both expressive and imaginative. "Without disturbing the essential melodic fluidity of Kirana vocalism, I try to allow the poetry and the rhythm a bigger role in the communication of the emotionality of the raga." Here he sings Jaunpuri, accompanied by Udayraj Karpur on tabala and Ravindra Katoti on harmonium.
Pt Kaivalya Kumar ji and Pt Venktesh Kumar are new age legends of Classical music.
This young man's rendering of every raga is so imaginative, expressive and soulful that he is definitely a true heir to the tradition of the great Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and deserves to be the next icon of the Kirana Gharana after the demise of Pandit Bhim Sen Joshi. God bless him!

We have been so much preoccupied with pt bhimsen josh ji being the torch bearer of the kirana gharana, we forgot the style that made the gharana. Sweet high pitched voice imaginative bol-alaps and a sense of romanticism. Pt kaivalya ji just provides just that

Lots and lots of भाव (emotions) in Panditji’s singing style. Not seen in any classical singers these days. They mostly focus on how fast is their taans alone and no emotions. Panditji Kaivalya ji’s style is 1 in 10 crore

Isn't it a bit much to compare this rendition to one of Kishori Amonkar's, especially her own composition? Besides, she is a known rebel against orthodoxy in classical music, so "originality" takes a different context for her. And there's also the Gharana aspect - what I expect from her recordings is different from what I expect from Kumar Gandharva's recordings, and different from Kaivalya Kumar's recording.
Finally, her style feels more approachable to the audience, ie. less abstract.

"Jaunpuri" is one of the most lyrical Raagas. Pt.Kaivalya Kumar's rendering here will certainly rank among the best( listen ,for example, to Bhimsen Joshi, FatehAliKhan, ParveenSultana, Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Bade Gulam Ali, SanjeevAbhyankar....and compare!).
Bimal Mahapatra i think the flow of taans of sanjeev abhyankar is smoother.. as u urself asked to compare thats y i looked at some finer points.. otherwise kaivalyakumar is a great artist too.

Maybe I shouldn't say it is a bit much to compare, it's okay to do that. We all have our personal likes and dislikes. All I'm saying is, you can't like the same thing about the two... they're just in completely different styles. Are you saying you don't like the style in general?

Ah! Perhaps you haven't read my comment carefully. So many artists have sung Bhoopali. But When Kishori Amonkar sings "Sahela Re', it is a divine experience. Because every line she sings is original, nowhere to be found. I am not belittling Kaivalya's rendering of this raga. I just didn't find anything interesting. May be I am wrong. I am not a musician, nor am I a music critic. I am a common listener. But I think I can discern chaff from you know what...
I earlier listened to his Bilashina Todi of Kaivalya Kumar and was spellbound. But this performance is just average. I am not comparing two young musicians, but if you listen to Majari Ansare Kelkar's Jaun Puri, you will know the true colors of this Raga.

@ PGR Nair Very true indeed, this is a very ordinary performance. This guy cannot sing steady notes. Very fluttery. I dont know how people get easily swayed by such performances and even start comparing with Pdt. Bhimsen Joshi ji. This guy at best is a second rate average artiste.
Dr. Hazra Sir I don't know why you would say this, you don't have any right to judge the standard of the artist. I understand that you may not have liked his performance, but it is everybody's choice or preference about what he/she likes or dislikes.
Apologies @Arul Seth, if my comments have hurt you. That wasn't intended. I was trying to arrive from a purely objective standpoint. Technically a classical singer or for that matter any singer cannot be justified as a topnotch one, until and unless he or she can sing long notes very steadily and precisely. That's what I meant. There are many subjective elements however, which largely come from individual tastes, and cannot be overridden. I thoroughly respect your sentiments.

If you are offended, I am sorry. Everything in music is too subjective. I have seen the Music Department of Karnatak University stooping to all time low, when on Gandhi Jayanthi, the students couldn't shift from Vaishnava Janato to Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram. I was Registrar (Evaluation) then, and I scolded the teachers who had brought those useless students there!
