Supposedly, this film was funded by a protestant church that had been duped by Ed Wood saying it was going to be a religious film. Bela Lugosi died of a heart attack on August 16, 1956, shortly after shooting some unrelated footage. Ed Wood added this footage into Plan 9 from Outer Space and decided to include it so he could bill the movie as "Lugosi's Last", using his wife's chiropractor, Thomas R Mason, as a stand-in for Lugosi, even though Mason is taller, thinner, and considerably younger than Lugosi. The appearance of Mason, with cape held in front of his face, may well be the origin of the 'Stereotype' Dracula image which is now associated with Lugosi.

This is in no way the worst movie ever made. This dubious title was given to the movie by the Medved brothers in their book The Golden Turkey Awards and it's stuck. Everyone will have their own definition of what a bad movie is and Plan 9 From Outer Space is too much fun to be bad. I got to see it back in the late 80s or early 90s when it played on Monster Vision with hosts Penn and Teller. I had only read about it in a couple books on cult movies but was never available. Apart from being completely incompetent I found it very entertaining. The best review I've ever read states that no matter what time of day you watch the movie it feels like three o'clock in the morning. The movie does have the quality of a fever dream.

All the actors look their part, the images are razor crisp, and aside a few dumb or clunky lines, the aircraft control columns and the wobbly flying saucers, I am glad this film got the fame over worse films... There are films you can barely tell what is going on, and Armaggedon with Bruce Willis is definitely more stupid, like doing a long speech before exploding the meteorite, when there is seconds to spare... I would also add some lines in T2 that beat anything Wood wrote by miles, like: "You men only know how to destroy things because you can't carry life inside you", to paraphrase what sounded even worse in the actual film.

@@wrathofatlantis2316 😂 right. man sometimes James Cameron went too far. one anecdote of mine that kind of parallels what you're saying is when I recently watched a reunion of the 60s batman show that a late night host did in 1988. You could just hear the enthusiasm of the applause coming from the audience, which is noticeably different than any other crowd response to later incarnations. it just made sense all of a sudden that people really like these garage or homemade American sensibilities. Even though it's ridiculous, it's not corporate. I also watched the incredibles recently and was floored by how much I enjoyed it, and it too has a 1950s or 60s kind of appeal. Some of the best filmmakers understand, like brad bird and tim burton. and they came out of the same animation team/class.

I've never seen this particular movie. I tried to watch the Rifftrax version but sometimes a movie is so bad that even they cannot bring much amusement to it. But Orgy of the Dead is unspeakably bad. I don't know how desperate a person would have to be to find this the least bit titillating, especially the amount of flesh is exposed. It becomes unbearably dull. But I ticked it off my Ed Wood filmography. Although I still consider Night of the Ghouls to be his worst.

A lot of people like this movie because it's a bad movie, they poke fun at it that's why they like it, but it is certainly not the worst movie ever made, I have seen horrible terrible movies that would make plan 9 from outer space 🚀🛸 look like an academy award nominated movie 🎥.😂

Some pals and I wanted to stage an event late at night - with bands, music and so on - with those scenes projected at half-speed to create a fantastic atmosphere. The power of the images is really something, and looking at the film in a different way, we thought, might bring attention to this, apart from giving everybody in attendance a great evening. We couldn't get it together though, since I was not convinced simply showing a video or dvd would have the same impact. It was do it right or not at all. But! It's not quite the same but play the film at 0.25 using the youtube speed settings, with the soundtrack of your choice, and you can have a reasonable facsimile of the experience in the comfort of your own home.

Along with this masterpiece we also had ‘Eegah’, ‘Robot Monster’, ‘The Wild Women Of Wongo’, ‘Santa Claus Conquers The Martians’ and ‘Mars Needs Women’.

Plan 9 really should be removed from anyone's list of Worst Films of All Time. It's far too entertaining. Ed Wood may have had no idea how to film a movie, but he had a style all his own. This movie was fun, and, to quote Penn Jillete (on one of the classic TNT Monstervision intros), "I would rather watch Plan 9 than ANYTHING from Merchant Ivory!" Damn straight!!
