In this video lesson, GM Igor Smirnov shares with you a less popular and deadly trap for White against the Sicilian Defense. It is from the Portsmouth Gambit (a variation of the Wing Gambit) which happens after the following opening moves: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.b4.
Black is disinclined to refuse the gambit due to the positional threat 4.b5, kicking the knight back and disrupting Black's smooth development. After Black accepts the gambit either with 3...cxb4 or 3...Nxb4, you can play 4.d4 dominating the center.
The variations that GM Igor Smirnov shows in this video are all deadly. Just one wrong move would lose the game for Black and you will get a winning position in almost all the variations. Learn this deadly trap and beat the Sicilian Defense as White!

My answer: bishop c3(threatening mate on e5 while attacking the queen at the same time, thus black must sac the queen to stop mate). Rook c2 is an alternative but not as good as after queen takes c2, the queen get's away with the rook at least before going as compared to a bishop for the queen.

    • @spartanbeast3575

After Bc3 and the opponent's queen sac, I'd play Ne5, aiming for Nd7# mate. If they don't move the knight away, I'd sac my queen for the knight defending d7. If they don't take the queen, then simply move the queen to c7 or c8 and that's mate.

In answer for white best move at 8:08, let's go for the King quicker. Bc3, Black Qe2, White Qf4+, Black e4, White Bxe5+. Checkmate is coming next move or two. If Black moves Qb6 after White moved Bc3, in order to throw pieces to block the checks, then White Be5+, checkmate is still coming, just takes longer. Black blocks with Qd6. White Bxd6+, exd6. White Qc4, Nc6 to block. After dxc6, and bxc6, White can bring in the second rook, but Qxc6 is faster. Thank you for the great videos.

Wow another nice line revealed. I'm a true fan of gambit opening. For d6 sicilian i like delayed alapin gambit which also has a lot of tricks & traps, then i'm glad that you show us another gambit for Nc6 sicilian aside from mengarini gambit (e4 c5, a3 nc6, b4). i'm sure many sicilian players are still unware of this line and could loose early in the opening, no sweat for us. there is always a hanging line for us to solve to keep our mind working, and that evil laugh that we're all waiting for :) thanks for sharing your secret weapon & more to come!

If after white's pawn move to b4, black uses the knight to take it, you can kiss this gambit goodbye. Now, you've lost a pawn unnecessarily. The success of this approach hinges on (a) black captures your sacrifice with the b5 pawn (b) later in the game, black does not move the knight to d8.

At 14:20, Black's king doesn't have to take the knight back. What if black just goes Ke7 protecting his queen?
It appears white's attack has petered out.
Good video otherwise. I needed another way to play against the Sicilian!

I get u, but think of this: if u know what is their best move and they play something random, it means it's necessarily not the best move, meaning u can do something to punish it
