Yes! A video you could put on the Wide Screen so that Phoebe could be your own personal minstrel! In a tavern, with the clink of glasses and the muttering of hobbits and dwarves plotting some adventure. A whole evening of entertainment!
Thank you for posting this. My dad recently passed away, and his name is John. I know the song has a different meaning, but to me, it feels like an ode to him about moving on. He's the reason I started learning the banjo, so I'm definitely going to learn this in the future. Thank you again.
A version of this melody was used for an old slave spiritual, a version of which was used in the movie, O Brother Where Art Thou (Down To The River To Pray). The oldest version of that song written down had these lyrics: As I went down in the valley to pray, Studying about that good old way, When you shall wear the starry crown, Good Lord, show me the way. O mourner, let's go down, let's go down, let's go down, O mourner, let's go down, Down in the valley to pray
Yes, peaceful. Enjoyable. Calming tone and contemplative spirit is far too absent in today’s noisy music and its guttural strained vocals. This interpretation compels you to listen while also comfortably willing you to allow it being a soundtrack for your thoughts.
Playing for others. They love high energy stuff. But this is beautiful. Playing for players, like yourself. I get it. When I play for me... yes, alone for me, it is much like the treatment you use for this shanty. Room between the note for the emotions to shine through. Blessings on you Phoebe. Thanks for sharing this one.
“They” is assumptive and stereotyping. I don’t play, but I like good music. I am not an infinitive. I am not “they.” Thankfully neither are most people; thankfully most people don’t look down on others in such an arrogant, conceited fashion.
Oh thank you so much, Phoebe!!! This is one of my favorite tunes - and the sound of that gourd banjo is incredible. Just catching up on your videos after a busy week - what a delight!
Ah yes. I love tunes that are great both fast and slow. I think that often the best tunes are the ones that can be played slow and still be beautiful.. St. Annes is one I love at a relaxed speed with a little swing. Thank you for the tune!
I love the lighting on this one, especially at the top and your left hand. Amazing how you can arrange so many different angles! I’ve rarely seen two videos with the same setup!
This old song has many verses. The way I first heard it was as a sea shanty. The sailors would sing these to keep the rhythm as they hauled on lines or holystoned the deck. This one wasn't typically melancholy, I imagine Now we go ashore, and we'll work no more Of "pump or drown" we've had full store We'll make her fast and stow our gear The girls are a-waitin on the pier!
I thought I heard the Old Man say: "Leave her, Johnny, leave her." Tomorrow you will get your pay, And it's time for us to leave her Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. Oh, the wind was foul and the sea ran high. "Leave her, Johnny, leave her!" She shipped it green and none went by. And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. I hate to sail on this rotten tub. "Leave her, Johnny, leave her!" No grog allowed and rotten grub. And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. We swear by rote for want of more. "Leave her, Johnny, leave her!" But now we're through so we'll go on shore. And it's time for us to leave her. Leave her, Johnny, leave her! Oh, leave her, Johnny, leave her! For the voyage is long and the winds don't blow And it's time for us to leave her. From classical music. com: Also known as Leave Her Bullies and Time for Us to Leave Her, the Irish sea shanty Leave Her, Johnny, leave her was often left for the last day of a voyage, when the crew felt free to air their grievances, knowing they would be soon leaving the ship (her). Although the first written record of the song dates to q1917, its origins are unknown, however it shares the same melody as the shanty Across the Western Ocean. Across the Western Ocean was inspired by penniless Irish people desperately trying to flee the potato famine between 1846-1850.
I first heard this tune in the game Assassin’s Creed Black Flag when I was younger. One of my favorites from the game. You covered it so well! I especially liked the dynamics change when you played the melody notes by themselves without the chords near the end, and then bringing the chords back in. Very cool
That was actually really good and unexpected. I listen to the whole thing and I text my buddy. I said they have to try this. I love that. I could see what you’re doing. Thank you very much. That was wonderful.
Phoebe and your banjo's facinate me sweetheart! I enjoy your playing! I want to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year! Dennis in Florida! 🌹❤️🥰♾️🪕🎄🌴🏖️🇺🇸
Always mixed feelings when you start with a frown. You have one of those smiles/frowns that always brings out the same emotion when viewing it but I also know the music will be so beautifully sad and cathartic as well. Like taking medicine or eating something you don't like but will make you feel so much better afterward because it's good for you. 💛*Hugs* Hope you got what you needed out doing this one too. Certainly helps with the seasonal blues on my end.
This is a great workers' song. every shitty, poorly paid job is a love hate relationship, and this song reminds you that you're in no better position than the working man two hundred years ago.
You have pretty eyes, especially when they are smiling. You must be a little blue. That's OK, that happens sometimes. The song was nice. You played it well.
If you had a whole album with music like this I would buy it just so I can sit and listen to you play in front of my fireplace in the evenings🥹
Maybe a DVD of you playing these melodies either there, in a barn or hayloft.
Yes! A video you could put on the Wide Screen so that Phoebe could be your own personal minstrel!
In a tavern, with the clink of glasses and the muttering of hobbits and dwarves plotting some adventure. A whole evening of entertainment!
When the times are hard and the wages are low, it's time to reach for the ol'e banjo.
For the voyage is long, hope no strings will blow, and it's time for us to crown her.

In times of melancholy, comfort is a good thing. Stay in the day, and do the next right thing.
Amen 🙏
That was magnificient!
Beautiful!
The lighting works perfectly with the song. Both thoughtful, gentle, and beautiful.
I was going to say what an amazingly moody picture the thumbnail is😊 but yes, really well set and played Phoebe👍
An old shanty(1860s?) about disembarking from a sailing ship.I agree that it's best performed slow.Nicely played Phoebe!
Hiya Phoebe, very soulful and thoughtful. Thanx so much, Martin London UK
A welcome addition to the end of a long day...
Blessings and Shalom in Him
Touches my heart and tugs at my soul...
Before finding your channel, I didn’t even know gourd banjos were a thing, and now I want one so bad.
Beautiful. Thank you!
You have a very natural and sincere sound that is enjoyable, and in this case very peaceful, to listen to.
Yes, peaceful. Enjoyable.

Have you heard Sail North's rendition? I like his, but thank you for a gentler version. :)
Wonderful! I hope all is well.
Wow! The way you capture the melancholy. The complete performance artist.😯

Фиби, не грусти! ;)
If I knew how to play a banjo and if I knew how to play that song, I would have chosen to play it in a sea shanty too
