The title on the score is plural: Les Neiges d'Antan. Presumably this is a reference to François Villon's "Ballade des femmes du temps jadis", with its famous refrain "Mais où sont les neiges d'antan?" - "But where are the snows of yesteryear?"
Ysaye was certainly a very good compser better than Kreisler it seems . I wonder do we have any recordings from the Belgian master . I wonder if Yehudi heard him . Do we have heifetz's letters would love to know what he thought of htese other famus violinsys.Cant find any Elman in the big concerti - Remarkable just miniatures . and Zimbalist seems to have left very little too . His son and granddaugter became so famuus ! I'm trying to write a 5th violin concerto with a long solo opening in open tone scales like the 3rd sonata of Ysaye and studying Boulez' crazy Notations for other ideas tat might sund like music of today should have someting to say to us. All this Ysaye is very nostalgic like chausson and Rachmaninoff but played here with less schmaltz in the best taste .!
The last three lines are pure magic with those armonics. Wonderful piece!
The more I listen to this, the beautifuller it becomes. Amazing, and the end wow, i just get chills from it. I really hope to play this someday
