How many Leeds united fans were there.? Little jimmy skinned us my uncle Andrew said what a legend and how much would he be worth in today’s game.??? Hope you can answer my question please 🙏 thanks ❤
136'505 officially but many thousands more got in one way or another without tickets...probably around 150'000 attendance...biggest in Europe ever and no surprise it's a GLASGOW CELTIC game....awesome !!!!
Clash of the titans. Probably the best 2 teams in Europe at the time. Sadly Celtic's performance in the final was well below their best when everybody fancied them to win. Great era for British clubs in Europe though.
An amazing match between two great British sides. And a crowd of 136,000...(!) Hampden today holds just 52,000. This was the semi-final, of course; Celtic then flopped against Feyenoord in the final. If they could beat Leeds twice, both home and away, they should have overcome the Dutch.
Scottish mentality : too cocky, took the Dutch "nobodies" for granted. As previous underdogs against Inter, Stein and Celtic should have known better. Dad, not Irish minded, was at the Hampden match, partisan Scottish crowd. The roar was up there when Celtic scored.
Several of that Celtic side have since said that this was the one and only time that Jock Stein underestimated the opposition, and perhaps didn't give their due respect. I think perhaps your description of 'Scottish mentality' stems from this, and no doubt from the fiasco in Argentina in 1978. But now, a generation later, we've gone the other way: no self-confidence, and perhaps too much respect for the opposition. And sadly I think it'll be a long time yet before Scotland reach the Euro or World Cup finals again.
Glad you mentioned Argentina 78. I think the depression post Feyenoord was maybe the same as the national side during the whole Peru, Iran and Willie Johnston stuff. I remember that as i was 10. Then we nearly did it against Holland, Archie's goal and we thought, we were going to make it. We've no confidence now, the SFA seem intent on pleasing everyone except the fans, the Hampden atmosphere is sterile and we can't keep a good manager. Maybe bring back the Home Internationals. Bobby Murdock, ever the gentleman, gave the ball to a feyenoord player he took the quick free kick and the celtic defence where not ready, the ball went over big billy's head and the dutch scored, at that time the game would go to a second match, and all the celtic players believe they would have won the replay, celtic let themselves down in the final, but i would have expected them to win the replay if bobby had not been such a sportsman and allowed them to take a quick free kick
WOW .. the biggest crowd in European history and way more than the official 136 thousand as given ...Billy Bremner said he only heard silence when he scored😂😂 those were the days my friend🎉

That is still the best and most exciting match I've ever watched. Nothing else comes close.

How many Scottish players in total played in that game? Changed days...

Just a correction to the title. This wasn't the first all-British tie. Celtic met Liverpool in the Cup Winners' Cup in 1966.
What is meant this is the First All British Tie in the Champions Tie.
Ah, but it doesn't say that in the title or even the description, does it? And what do you mean, 'The Champions Tie'? This was the 'European Cup', 1970.
What i mean it was the first time the Scots champions faced the English Champions in Europe.
Rangers and Spurs i think in the old Fairs or Cup-Winners' tournaments ( '63?). Wondering if Dave Mackay played.
The title is incorrect. Why anyone would dispute this is beyond me!
