  • After spending almost three bazillion Zimbabwe dollars on hoof boots here are a few thoughts of mine.
    Scoot Boots
    Flex Hoof Boots
    Explora Magic
    Easyboot Fury
    Easyboot Gloves
    Cavallo Trek
    Disclaimer:
More of a cyclist and not a real horseman.
Just my opinion so feel free to disagree and tell me that im crazy.
Imo all boots are viable so go with what fits first :D
I might do something silly like cutting my own tread pattern into my furys so well see how that goes.

I have tried Easyboots, Renegades, Cavallos, Equine Jogging Shoe, and Scoots. Easyboots are not easy, Renegades were wonderful until the wires broke. Yes, I know they can be replaced (which I did) but I don't want to risk losing a boot due to a broken wire. Cavallos are great, I have several pairs and have used them for many years. They never come off. The only thing I dislike I
s that they are a bit "clompy". My horses love them. When the Cavallos are on, they go pounding down the trail seeming to know they can't get hurt. The Equine Jogging Shoe is fantastic, a bit expensive. Scoots work well but the sole seems a bit thin to me. I was given a pair and use them on rear hooves. If I didn't like the Cavallos and Jogging shoe I would consider the Scoots. All in all I have to agree with the video, Cavallos are the best and easiest to use. I personally avoid anything made by Easyboot and anything with a wire.

Thanks for making this video and the comments people have left are also really helpful. My horse and I are completely new to hoof boots and your video has backed up my plan to start out with Cavellos, so🤞!

Loved this video. Thanks for putting in the time to make it. I've had pretty good experience with scoot boots I didn't use the sizing service or anything I did that myself. I agree with you on stretch it is a down side and now they offer shims and things to make them fit after stretch.. would this perhaps not stretch them more? I've seen people stretch the heels with boiling water and I have seen it done well and badly. It seems to tricky for me to throw away a set of shoes if you mess it up! I've not tried other brands yet as I went from shod straight to scoots.. price point was my draw card. I've had a set now for two years on the front of my mare and they still have a ridiculous amount of tred and recently I've bought a set for her hinds just to prevent her hinds wearing down on the really rough ground and roads.
    Again loved the video!

Thank you! 😃 You helped me make the decision to just order the explora hoof boots. Had a really hard time deciding what brand to buy!

Thanks! Great video covering range of aspects, including flexibility which is hard to research! :) Great to see some of the new boot models reviewed without having to buy them myself, thank you! :D I'm a long-time (10 years) Renegade user so not worried about Renegades being missed. Also previously used Easyboots, mostly Gloves.

thanks so much!! I am going to get the flex as I like that flex, the tread and I am ok with the shorter life span as I only want to use them on a 1/2 hour trail ride a few times a week. They should last me and help my horse on the very stony ground!

Thank you. Brilliant video. Just trying to find a better pair of boots for my boy. Been using the Treks but find them a bit cumbersome. Think I'm going to try the Flex boots. Hoping they will fit but at least have some other options now to think about .

I have been using explora boots about three months now on my thoroughbred approximately twice a week. I went through all available video reviews on youtube prior my purchase so this is my feedback to all potential buyers. I have ended up with explora, while considering also other options on the market, for these reasons: design, adjustability, value for money and positive reviews. My horse has wide and short hoofs so my first pair I ordered had to be customized for no extra charge, thank you for that explora. It showed however that one hoof is slightly bigger than other. So rule number one, measure twice cut once. I decided to order one size smaller, now without customization. Still, first 4 weeks after trimming I would need even one size less for one hoof. So I sugest to rather downsize than go the other way around as I did. Now, what will matter to durability and performance most besides perfect fitting is what you do with your horse. As I go out for a walk, trotting and light canter on my thoroughbred is fine, hoof will stay in its place. As for anything faster it will just fly away. Now this can be obviouly caused by many factors, stepping with back feet on front, physical laws and nature of design and material used. Point is not to expect any wonders while doing anything but relaxed exercise. For me explora is extremely high maintenace and time consuming boot, requiring about 15 minutes of time after every ride to exchange broken parts, reposition or tighten things. Fortunately it comes with a lot of spare parts but you need to be technically able. Still I give it a chance and might even buy smaller size because the fundamental of this product is good. Some components need to be stronger and thicker, some screws longer, adjusting of heel side is nightmare, inner heel rubber needs constant repositioning and rescrewing but you can live with that, or just take it out. So I suggest when buying ask for double amount of screws, front rubber band and definitely that colorful sides as holes will tear through, I had to screw extra holes but it will not last long. They have good customer service so that should not be a problem at all. Good luck

I like the simplicity of the cavallos and they don't have a lot of stuff on them that can break. I also like that they come a little higher on the hoof and seem pretty secure. My Renegades kept coming off. They just barely cover the bulb.

I think when it comes to value, that depends on where you live. Here in the US, most of the boots are fairly close in price (around $100 per boot) including the Renegades which you said were super expensive in Australia and including the green Cavallo Treks, which aren't cheaper than the others you reviewed. (In general Cavallos are cheaper, but for some reason the green ones aren't.)

Interesting insight into the tread design compared to bike tyres! Somehow hadn't considered how a softer compound probably increases grip as much or more than an aggressive tread design. Yet to find one that doesn't pick up gravel though, guess it's part and parcel. Not sure a really wide apart grip pattern like on tyres would work for horses and anything too sticky would affect their hoof landing but theres definitely value in the comparison.

I have never heard of the flex or explorea
I have used the scoot boot but my Icelandic mare has low heels so they rubbed.
    Renegades don’t run small enough.
I have used easy boot gloves moderate success but have jumped into their gluon line or just gluing on broken boot shells she needs the thicker material as she runs her toes off. I never get a reset use on gluon if they stick the whose set.

I have cavallo beginner boots. I think they are OK, but Clunky. sometimes my horse interferes and trips. I also had the Easyboot Fury. That adjusts great but once you glue the screws in that is it. I could not get the screws out to readjust them. Easyboot did not help AT ALL. This was an interesting comparison of hoof boots and very helpful

Thanks you! Nice video covering different aspects. In regard to wearing, would the flex boots be better or worse then the scoot boots?

Scoots should last longer (maybe 10-15% longer wearing)

I'm just starting to look at boots for my mare. She wears shoes for slightly sensitive feet. Like in the pasture she could easily be barefoot, but on gravel or at higher speeds I just notice a hesitance. She only needs shoes on the front too, her backs are hard as rocks.
I'm thinking I might save money and probably her hooves by using boots when I ride and letting her be barefoot most of the time. She was barefoot for several years, but like I said, she's just a bit more prone to tripping or being a little hesitant.
And it would save my poor farrier because my mare is a horrible leaner and flinches every time he hits her shoe with a hammer to drive a nail. She's kinda prissy. Nearly life long show horse.
I like the ability of the hoof to flex when in boots and barefoot, but I have to justify price, legality in show rings(looking at possibly competing in endurance, dressage, showjumping, or cross country all at super low levels), and length of life for the boots.

Really helpful overview, thanks so much. Do you have any experience with the Renegade Vipers? I'd love to hear your thoughts on them if you have.

      No experience sorry
Went for other brands as the design looked fairly clunky and dated.
In aus they are also more expensive ($400 for vipers vs say $250 for scoots)

I've been using Renegades on my Paint mare for about 12 years now (both Classic and Vipers). Love them to pieces for her but sizing is a bit tricky if you're dealing with an oddly shaped hoof (which I am of course). They are a bit adjustable which helps and can be adjusted as needed through the trim cycle. No joke, these are the only boots that I've tried for her that she hasn't managed to fling off in the pasture somewhere. Her original Classics lasted about 6 years (she's not ridden hard) and her Vipers are on year 3 now. Around year 4 I did have to replace the top pastern strap because the Velcro was wearing out but that was it. I have several friends who swear by them too. They're an investment for sure but well worth it for me.

    • @Baroque60
      @Baroque60 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@TsubakiHatake Thank you so much for your input. The Vipers make a great deal of sense to me as to their design. And there has to be a reason that they are very popular with endurance riders. But we see relatively fewer of them around. I wonder if it's because they are more expensive than most? I like some of the new boots coming on the market now but I think that as makers go more and more for greater flexibility they will be losing life length as regards wear. I like that the Renegades seem so tough!

    • @epona9166
      @epona9166 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Baroque60 I love the movable heel captivator concept, too; it makes so much sense. But I just got sick of dealing with it on one horse. In order to fit him, I have to set the wire so short that it's hard to roll the captivator back before putting them on. It keeps hanging up on the foam and on the Vipers the foam itself isn't replaceable like on the Classics; you have to replace the whole captivator, which is more expensive and a pain to physically replace. The other horse is easy to get on and off, so I'll probably end up with one in the Classics and one in Scoots. Thankfully there's a negligible price difference between Renegades ($102-107 US) and Scoots ($100 US) in the US, so that's not a factor 😊
