Balance is key. It is the role of government to strike that balance. You can not do away with tourism as it is necessary for government revenue and therefore social services.

You need to ban short term rental units or at least regulate them massively. That should be for hotels only. Places with limited housing stock--that is most cities--are seeing huge rise in costs partly due to the rise of short term rentals... beyond all the other issues those rentals churn up.

Shut down Tourism and let's see how quickly the residents want them back!!
It doesn't sound like anybody over the decades has applied Any Common Sense as to how money is generated or spent in this city.
All of their problems appear to be the fault of others. It has nothing to do possibly with their own path of thinking or lack of Management...🤔🤔
The quickest way to solve these problems is to stop blaming others and start doing something for yourselves.
Your mayor is on the right path but the mindset of the people is very low.

Tourism helps tourist-related businesses and housing (air bnbs)There may be lots of money circulating but it's not helping the local businesses and housing situation.

      @9931clwtr 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

@patricequinn7733 .... They have 1.6 million residents, they get approximately 30 million visitors. That's just over 18 times the population, which is a Monumental boost in tax revenue. In the area that I live we had just over 15 million tourists last year. This generated over 98 million dollars in tax revenue that goes to the county.
You can say and believe whatever you want. But at the end of the day the proof is in the math. The local government doesn't know what it's doing, and the residence know even less. They should be holding their local government accountable

Lol you sound like an entitled tourist that thinks they are blessing locals with the purchase of a few glasses of wine and a tour or two. Everyone knows tourism is a key industry for the city. But like almost anything too much can be detrimental. Would you want your neighbourhood to be flooded by Airbnb’s? Would you want your local grocery store turned into a KFC or McDonalds? People appreciate the economic benefits of tourism but there is a limit to that. At some point people will not care about the espresso martini you ordered because they can’t live their daily lives the way they want to anymore.

This isn't telling the whole story. I bought an apartment in Barcelona in 2023. The sales tax on everything you buy is 21 PERCENT. I paid 53,000 Euros in tax to buy my apartment. When you ship anything into the country you pay punishing taxes and duty. Where is all of that money going?
The city is awash in illegal tourist rentals via AirBnB and the other sites, and the government is finally taking steps to ban them but there's a lot of tourist accommodation tax money not being collected. These apartments are now unavailable for locals to live in, driving up costs and pushing people out of the city, so this effort should help with two issues.
The super touristy places like La Rambla and the marina are overflowing with overpriced restaurants, some don't even show the price, and when you get the bill you see you just paid 20 Euros for a glass of beer. Trust me, the businesses that cater to tourists are doing just fine. And they employ tens of thousands of people. Reduce tourism and businesses and jobs are lost.
There are a huge number of markets around the city selling quality meat and veg, this isn't a problem.
Aircon and solar in schools is great, but as the woman said this is a health issue for the residents and should be paid for out of normal tax revenue, not using tourist tax money as a lifeline. I'm trying to put solar on the roof of my apartment and it's a nightmare of bureaucracy, when the city should be promoting it strongly.

It is not that the economics of tourism just pushes out local businesses.
It is that people, their culture is being pushed aside.
Places, buildings and names remain the same. But what makes the city what is was is now different.
Identity lost. We see this in Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, NY.
Most tourists are not there to exchange culture.
They tend to be there for leisure and to claim pieces of the local cultural identity for their Instagram account.
To change the economics of tourism you need to change the culture of tourism.
Tourist are like an undiscovered nation that is hiding in plain sight. A colonizing culture.
They divide and conquer between the division of locals that economically benefit and those that do not.
Having tourists flip the bill for environmental issues reinforces the relation between tourists and economic interests.
For the best of reasons the wrong choice?

Unfortunately it's a bit of a perfect storm when it comes to tourism. Emerging economic regions are now travelling where before they did not, India China etc. The the number of people and the age demographic of people travelling is vastly different than 15 years ago. It's an inconvenient truth but the largest demographic on the earth (millennials) have aged up finished school, working and are travelling. And I'm sure it feels like an absolute tsunami of people for these cities. And I think on top of it Barcelona being a cruise ship city probably doesn't help the situation. There's quite a few people lumbering around just waiting to get on the cruise ship or hanging out afterwards.

But I think these Spanish cities (and others in the Mediterranean) value more their culture / principles and need to keep the cities as they were.
    I respect it.

Huh, I have spent about 4 weeks in Barcelona over the last two years and never saw a Starbucks--there are plenty of local coffee shops. I find Barcelona very friendly as a visitor, but when you go, where you go, what languages you speak and how considerate you are of the locals matters a lot. I sure would not recommend going in the summer, and even the early fall (I was recently there the last week of September and first week of October) due to weather and crowds.

So, for years and years, local government encouraged tourism to Barcelona…many businesses started to cater to tourists; new businesses (tour agencies, more hotels, restaurants, etc…) arose to support tourism. The economy has thrived and countless jobs have been created, in large part because of tourism. Must be tough being a victim of your own success.
But it’s not the tourists fault. Blame the local government, businesses that cater to tourists…however, keep in mind that without tourism the economy of Barcelona would crash…revenues will plummet, businesses will close, jobs will be lost, unemployment will rise even further, and poverty will increase.

I agree emphatically with taxing tourists. On the other hand, I disagree with calling it a climate tax. Climate change is not (exclusively) to blame on tourists. Furthermore the link between the two problems blurs the solutions. For a city that has tourist-funded jaw-dropping projects, like Sagrada Family, I find this tax sloppy at best. First, it fails to acknowledge the role of big corporation linked to tourism in solving the issue. Will they also be taxed? Or should these corporations better address land use and gradual gentrification issues? How about locals that cause warm temperatures with their cars in traffic jams? Are they the victims or are they inadvertently also contributing to the problem? How about the Americans? I don't know why but they always seem to be involved in problems around the world... 😂These are not easy questions, and I am torn about some, but let's just not mix tourists and climate

I get their frustration but the solution isn't to attack tourists. You are doing irreversible harm to your city's reputation and its finances. The solution is to build more housing and to enact taxes on Airbnbs and hotels. This will increase government revenues and serve as a disincentive to tourism overload. I'm very sad to see such nice Barcelona people turning into monsters. I always dreamt of watching El Clasico at the Camp Nou but not anymore, I don't want to get attacked simply for being a Barcelona FC fan. I guess every good thing has to come to an end some time... so sad..

My country paid for my birth in the form of hospitals, educated me with schools, gave me a job, gave me roads, infrastructure and an environment to earn and generate an income. Spain had no part to play in that at all. Now, I go to Spain as a tourist to spend the money that I earned - in *MY* country - zero contribution by Spain and you want to physically attack me for giving you free money? No, thank you! Next!

    • @Oceansta
      @Oceansta 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@MikesTropicalTech I cant believe I'm actually having to explain this but ok, here goes :
Tourism is 13% of Spains GDP. That comes to around 210 Billion Dollars. Your economy would be poorer by that much had it not been for tourism. For perspective: 1 years tourism inflows = 10 years of your military budget, 3 years of your education budget, and even your healthcare budget is just 10% of GDP. So if tourists were to disappear, trust me you would feel it. Hard.
Tourism provides employment to a large number of Spanish people. It's an entire industry by itself. Without tourism those people wouldn't have jobs.
That being said, yes tourists get hotels, food etc but theres also the tax which tourists pay on everything - which is free income for Spain. I don't think you understand that tourists spend money in Spain which is generated in their home nations. If it was earned in Spain and spent in Spain, it wouldn't be that big of a deal. So, in that way, yes its free money for you.
