    Piloting one of these (or is it just "this") craft has have the coolest vibe, since you're doing something no one else in the world is doing.

    That idea I’ve always thought would work great as part of a rafts survival kit. A smaller version would fit nicely in the seat pan of an ejection seat as part of the raft. Giving carrier pilots greater options to move the raft towards a shore instead of bobbing in the water for days on end.

    • @ggerhart
      @ggerhart 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      actually not a bad idea, but to be able to go in a specific direction you need some way to steer raft. but then you are working a kite and a rudder at the same time.

    • @rydenkaye9735
      @rydenkaye9735 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not necessary as long as your raft is small enough you can tip it with your body weight to make an edge dip in like a kiteboard. It would be tough but doable

    • @vincent7520
      @vincent7520 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally yes.
      Practically there still a long way to make a small flexible raft seaworthy, truly maneuverable and srong enough to withstand the constant pounding of the waves … the more so the speed is highr. For the time being I'm not sure it is feasible.
      The again it may well be that some are working at it somewhere in a gorvernent agency…

      Peter Ebel - thanks Peter. I’ve watched foiling moths for ages and never noticed it although it’s very obvious to me now. I think it’s because on this design the sensor wand is stuck so far out in front of the bows it’s very obvious. Whereas the moth has it just short of the bow on the starboard side.

    Could set the trim a little higher on the front trim lines. Not overall, but when the kite gets ahead of you more. Maybe an on the fly trim???? But over all a great set up. I've never seen this before. I'm amazed by that. it's a great concept that has great potential. Keep up the great work guys. Love this.

    I've seen this a few times, and I'd love to know why the made the decision to use an LEI over a foil kite. Surely that thing is rarely, if ever hitting the water and needing to be relaunched, so why not save some weight, and gain some performance with a foil kite? Hell, they could probably even repurpose an old 30 metre paraglider!

    I found this video 4 years ago (according to my previous comment) and here we are, a total of 7 years later, and I still love it. But where has the concept gone? It seems that a bit bigger but lighter boat $$$$$😖 with computer control of ride height $$$$$$😖 and foil design that prevents a much bigger kite $$$$$😖from yanking it out of the water, would make possible absolutely stoopid speed!

  • @LonerSurfer

    Correct me if I’m wrong. One person steers the boat (sorry for not using proper nautical terminology). One steers the kite (the same with kiting terminology). And one controls the pivot for the kite pilot. I’m a former freestyle kite pilot and maneuvering a freestyle kite combines the flying of the kite from the handles and keeping the kite within the boundaries of useable wind by pivoting your body within those boundaries to actually fly the kite. Fly too far out of those boundaries and your kite falls to the ground (or water). I see the person controlling the pivot keeping it in the useable wind window and the pilot maneuvering the kite to find the power zone (I actually had a 4 line traction kite too and know power zone). Right or wrong - still a badass kite boat 🪁 ⛵️

    I have a conceptual sketch I made of this marrying of hydrofoil with traction kite from around 2002. It stemmed from a hobie cat that was modded with a seated turntable type control centre like this.
    I figure the opposite foil to the traction force will trim for down force to prevent it from lifting out of the water. Is this right?

    The innovation here is the device that keeps each pontoon from nose diving into the surf by constantly exerting downward force on the tip of each pontoon. That seems to provide the biggest stability benefit (I'm just a land locked engineer that loves sailing, so what do I know).

      @geoffankrett7012 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@psgouros I know that I used to sale myself many years ago but surely you must pay a price for having long lines out and a lot less control when changing direction. A spinnaker sail adds lots of sale area without intruding on other vessels the way long lines would.

    • @linolinco
      @linolinco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      a) stronger winds aloft , b) next to no heeling moment, and most importantly c) the ability to increase airspeed at the kite to double or triple the boat's apparent windspeed by steering figure-8s. This yields far more power per wing area, and allows an experienced pilot to keep airspeed near the optimum for which the airfoil is designed across a range of wind conditions and courses. It's only a matter of time before the AC discovers this too.

      I have a design in my head for similar devices. Basically a submerged shuttle/ anchor with depth control to keep tension and height controlled. My idea is that the shuttle keeps the kite pulling forward instead of up or sideways. Same design could just be a submerged shuttle kite and harness and you could ride the kite from 20 - 40 feet up in the air.

      @@jonathantrekallover9369 I read a brief description in a kite book definitely over 20 years ago of it having been done. I looked and have been hoping for more information ever since.
