I am from S. Louisiana and cooked with cast iron pots most of my adult life and have always used metal utensils on cast iron, never had any problems. I understand not using metal utensils with non-stick cooking pans because you won't want to scratch the non-stick off, but with cast iron, totally fine. Have a great weekend 😊❤😊
I’ve only used metal utensils and I do scrap anything in the pan that has stuck to the bottom. It won’t hurt it at all. I believe you might be thinking about nonstick coating on non cast iron. Cast iron will hold up to anything you do to it.
Hey Sean probably already heard this from 100,000 other people but you need to get a cap on that stove pipe outside, put some wire cables probably three of them stretched out and staked in the ground to hold that stove pipe really tight. The cap on their it'll give a lot better draw with no rain getting into your stove and less wind damage. Blessings to you all!
I said the same thing when he was putting it up. Have you done a water test to make sure it is at drinkable levels or are you putting it through a filter before using?
My mom ,grandma and great grandma cooked in cast iron all my life, they all used metal to cook with,I am almost 76 years old.thank you for your service. God bless stay safe and happy
The handle on that pot should be put on the other end so it goes out away from the pot- not over it like you have it❤also get shoe spray waterproofing and spray the top part of the tent to help protect from leaking ❤
Dutch I been cooking with cast iron pans for 52 years and used metal spatulas, spoons , extra . And it don’t hurt them. I have had my first set of cast iron pans since age17 and I’m still using that same set. And on 62 years old.
Oh my gosh! This has to be the prettiest video ever! The campsite, the stream, the forrest area, and the deer running through the trees, priceless! WOW! The coyote and then the bobcat! Way cool! Thank you for your service. My son was over in Iraq with the Marines, also. He was in there about the same time as you were. He had to do 3 tours over there. Really scared me cause some of his buddies didn't make it back. So thankful you both made it back. God bless. 😊❤
After years of off grid tenting I have found that a waterproof nylon fly over the canvas tent with about 3 to 4 inches air space between the two of them works really well. Wet snow comes off easily and keeps you warm as the wet canvas will make it very damp inside even with a fire burning oven/heater. A cheap woven tarp works good but the nylon still is the best and easy to put away afterwards.
Sean I think that cast iron is the only thing you can use metal on , you can't hurt the cast iron skillet with metal cutlery!!! Just scrape away 😄👍 Oh this was 10 days ago 😮
I love having a camp fire. Cheapest fire starter I’ve found is I take the biggest prescription bottle and stuff it with cotton balls then add alcohol as full as I can. When I’m ready to start a fire, I just pull about 2 cotton balls. I place them around and under my kindling, light the alcohol soaked cotton balls and they burn for a long time. Very cheap and works great. Enjoy your videos very much.
Sean, the guy lines need to be perpendicular and at a 45° angle. You may need to move the tent inland a bit to get some firm soil for the stakes. Or maybe get longer and more heavy duty stakes.
I have tip for you as far as cast iron. I was told by another TH-cam channel creator(Homesteading with the Zimmermans)that her Amish grandmother always had her husband take her skillets and grind the interior cooking surface till it was shiny and smooth as a baby's bottom and never had anything stick to it ever again!! That hack went against everything that we were taught by our elders but we took a chance and did it! It worked great! Metal will never damage cast iron pans!! Whoever told you that must have never cooked cast iron pans! Lol
Sean, I'd get a fire blanket instead of a fire extinguisher because youd have a mess to clean up. A bunch of firefighters made one which would be good. Most people even forget how to use a fire extinguisher. The blanket you just throw over fire. They are reusable too.❤😊
Hey Dutch, Thank You for your service. I've been out 53 yrs myself, seems like a lifetime ago now. I love the stream side camping site. Keep it going and we'll be watching.
Hey Dutch - couldn't hurt to add an extra top fly. I am sure you could rig up a fly pole. Space it about 6-10 inches above the top of the tent. Yes I know you are saying, what about the stove pipe. This could be for when you are NOT in the tent OR extra pipe patches (pipe protection) are available. I spent many, many, many a night in a canvas tent with a fly both in winter and summer. Found having the fly in the summer was great for keeping the heat down and protection from sun damage to the tent. Luv your set up! Our stove was not as nice but 30 years of camping I have seen many stills. I like yours the best so far. Have fun making memories with your family. 🌻🤟🌻
If you haven’t water proofed your tent you need to do that. We use to do a lot of tent camping 🏕️ you have a beautiful spot right there. Enjoy with your family. God bless!
Snow buildup can sometimes happen on a larger tent with different room elevations. I built a wooden frame for my Ozark Trail wall tent for use in Tennessee, it's been 4 years up now. Love ya'll ❤️
Whoosh, y’all are brave! But what a neat experience and beautiful scenery. Once hubby n I were going to show my parents how fun it was to tent camp. They stayed in a motel. There came a gully washer out of nowhere. We all had a good laugh when we showed up drenched! We folded and stayed with them another night.
Hey Dutch that spot is great cause at night going to sleep hearing that water running would put me out quickly. Just have to watch that water from rising. Yes put feed in them feeders I got mine out so mommies get good fed to help on their babies to come. Right now I have seen 7 doe back there eating on camera plus got Mineral & Sulfur blocks out too. GB y'all stay safe & take care 😊
The snowy scene of the river and snow covered rock ledges and tree limbs was so beautiful and serene. Thanks for a perfect view of the wintery scenery !!❤
For sand or gravel a piece of angle iron about 1 1/4 x 1 1/4 x 3/16 with a pointed end and a hole with a ring at the other ends works very well for tent pegs They should be about 8 to 12 inches long and you will never be with out these ever again. They also work good on dirt ground. Also make your self a garden hook to be used to pull them out.
May understanding from back in the day, you never touch the inside of a canvas tent because it will cause it to leak. With that being said, the newer ones may not leak like those did back in the 80s.. I too remember being in those big canvas army tents. They always smelled like an oil of some kind
If you're camping and there's any chance of rain, set your tent on a slight slope. Dig a trench around the base of the tent, that will allow any rain to drain away from the tent.
Dutch, you might like to pack a few ginger_tumeric tea bags in your camping food box. Make a tea and cook the rice in the tea and you will enjoy more flavor in your chicken fried rice. Really enjoy your videos! Thanks for sharing your life with us viewers.
Thank you for your service. I always you metal on my cast Iron skillet and mine are older than you. You are right you do not scratch at them you are not digging for gold.
Stove pipe needs a cap but like I suggested a cabin in the woods would be better. All you need is a one room cabin with a cozy fireplace. In my day I loved going camping in a tent but the old bones get to not like it. While your young build that cabin. Then it will always be there. Only have to maintain the small cabin. Oh love that iron stove. Where did you get that? Love the outdoor cooking. Every recipe so far I'm going to try.
What do you mean, saying that you don't want to scratch your cast iron with metal? The steel chain mail is the go- to for cleaning cast iron. Always has been since the middle ages ! 🤣
I was in the Royal Engineers and yes lived in canvas tents a good lot. I was in the Heavy Plant Sqn, so was kept on the move.....Worked a lot with 45 Marine Command lol...stay safe and see you on the next one.
I would love to see you and your kids make a teepee or wood shelter in that area that would last forever. Also a solar fleece blanket under the sleeping bag or on top works great or fleece sleeping bag liner for the girls. You could take along a buddy heater to turn on when you sleep so you dont have to get up so many times. Thank you also for your service.
Hey Dutch, great show as always. I know you have some rebar laying around. Just take a footlong piece, put a hook in the end, tie a rope to the hook so you can pull it out of the ground. And there you go free hook for your tent that will never come out.
The scene of the heavenly snow coming down the smoke from the chimney from the canvas tent and the view from the open window. Quit teasing me my favorite is hot tea with lemon and honey. Very cool video. Very cold here in Michigan 20° feels like 6°
Sean, take a garage broom with ya next time you’re expecting snow. 😊. No necessarily to sweep it off, but from the inside, you can lift more of the tent ceiling at one time, rather than hitting it so it falls off.
@@daniellewoolley8607wow, how rude! Leslie’s comment to Sean (not you) clearly said “take a broom with you NEXT TIME you are expecting snow” wether you think spring is around the corner or not, snow can come anytime, that advice could be helpful for next week or next year. Great video! You may want to move a little further from the creek. With the melting snow, any rain is likely to cause high water. Would hate to see your campsite washed away.
2 guy lines at each point will hold it tighter instead of just one. Not to mention high winds will tear it up if you don't have it tight enough. As for the cast iron skillet you can use ANYTHING in cast iron.
Sean it reminds me of our family camping trips. We got flooded in AR and an August snow at Idaho Falls, CO. Keep it interesting because the girls will have memories that last a lifetime.😀
Greetings, We (the lady of the our manor and myself) are fairly new in the discovery of your channel. I really appreciate the edumercation on getting back to a modern take on how the pioneers lived back in the day, especially on the creek property. Something that I've been curious about is whether the creek supports fish? You might have shown it or discussed it in a precious video that I might have missed? I know that there have been signs of different animals using it as a drinking fountain an and such.
I bought a cool small portable changing / bathroom . I put an actual folding bathroom chair in it, came with disposable waste bags. Good for us girls not having to squat in nature.
It looks like it would be fun to camp there by the creek with the snow falling. Love your tent with the stove. So cozy looking. Glad you enjoyed your camping time.
From the looks like you are in a flood zone, you also need a cap for the stove pipe, another thing is that you should have some sort of cover for the top of the tent ,or move the tent so you have protection with the trees, just have to watch for dead fall.
We have Kodiak 10x10 flexbow tent. Awesome tent. It's good to put a tarp under your tent to protect the floor, also helps keeping rain from getting under it, not to extend beyond the size of the tent floor. I also found it helpful to put a tarp over the floor inside, easy to clean, we have dogs. Lol. Since Kodiak tent roofs are white, we made the mistake of putting it up under trees that dropped sap on it, hell to clean it off. So put a cool lightweight tarp on top as a fly. Anyhow love your tent
Loving the new tent adventure. My father was a Boy Scout leader, and we stayed in hot tents all the time. If I remember correctly he brought large wooden steaks for the inside of the tent, and also outside.we camped in snow in Minnesota
Dutch, I have used canvas tens fir many years (too old to handle that wright now). Canvas in snow is an issue. Snow would rather stick to canvas rather than slide off. An extra fly (plastic or slippery material) above with an airspace will help alot. You should also tie your pole ropes at 90 degrees from the tent and keep tight. Your corner poles should have two ropes (both at 90 degrees). You might be able to get away without tightening as I suggested in non snow, but, any sagging will cause the snow to build up. Keep enjoying the outdoors and time with your family
My mom only use metal utensils in her cast-iron although I still have all her cast-iron. I just don’t use it for two reasons it’s too heavy for me and I have a glass cooktop that I don’t care to get scratched up or explode. I remember my aunt she cooked scrambled eggs every morning in her cast-iron pan never use anything but metal utensil, and they never had any problems. But then again, nowadays pans are not made as well as the ones close to 100 years ago.
The cast iron skillet is iron. You're not gonna scratch it with metal utensils. BTW once a Marine ALWAYS a Marine. Thank you for your service and your sacrifices! God bless you & your family❤️🤍💙🙏🙏🙏.
Dad always had a tarp about 2 inches bigger than the bottom of the tent that he put down first. For insulation and keeping the racks from ripping the bottom of the tent. And we used to have the old canvas style tents. So you didn’t put anything touching the canvas or you’d cause a sweat leak. We could never afford a stove like yours ; so we always froze our butts off.
Hi . The good thing with cast iron pans is that you can use anything in them , I think your thinking of none stick pans that scratch easy. Keep the great videos coming Thanks
Such a pretty area down by the creek 😊! Your chicken and rice lunch looked really yummy 😃! I could barely see the deer 🦌 running but wow! Thanks for sharing the tranquility of the creek and snowy tent🙏🏻😁💕!
The utensils they had back in the day were metal. My Grandmother, Mom and me have metal it didn’t hurt the cast Iron cookware. If you don’t know you can get another cup of tea out of the teabag. 😉 God Bless everyone 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
I would probably move it a foot or so further from the water and rocks. A canvas tent is super hot in here he summer. I would get a vinyl tent for the summer. Unless you have a small fan or a/c with a generator. I have never been camping in winter much less snow. I like your whole set up of cook stove/heater. Way to go.
Hey, You might be better off by getting a frame held tent system. Especially during snow or storms. I have camped in many types of tent and sometimes week or mare at a time. And the rigid frame type are the best.
When u know it's going to snow bring a broom with u to sweep tent off. Make sure the tent is tight all way around, no sags anywhere. Guide ropes tight too. Make sure your guide ropes don't stretch. It's a pain when that happens.
You need some really firm soil to stake into, probably the corkscrew type. Also, the tent will expand and contract with the temps and with new usage. You need to stretch it insanely tight with tight guy wires. Then, tighten it again and again, as temps fluctuate until it's stable. Boy scout mom of 2 and insanely involved in all things camping. Lol. My boys aged out, but I'm still involved with the same troop (one of the oldest in the nation). Good luck to successful camping!

The cast iron skillet is iron. You're not gonna scratch it with metal utensils. BTW once a Marine ALWAYS a Marine. Thank you for your service and your sacrifices! God bless you & your family❤️🤍💙🙏🙏🙏.
Thanks again for another awesome video I really enjoyed it and as always I'm really looking forward to seeing the next video
Great Job on saving the tent Dutch I was surprised to see it still up.
That's beautiful!
I seen the deer takeoff running. I really enjoy your really videos.
ENJOYED WATCHING THE VIDEO DUTCH 😊😊
Looks so nice çreekside with the snowfall! Sounds so nice!
So beautiful with the snow.
Hi . The good thing with cast iron pans is that you can use anything in them , I think your thinking of none stick pans that scratch easy. Keep the great videos coming Thanks
Awesome video I use to love camping when I was young. Take care and stay safe. God bless
The new fire blankets are the best now!!!!
Enjoy the creek adventures recently and the cave cooking.
Such a pretty area down by the creek 😊! Your chicken and rice lunch looked really yummy 😃! I could barely see the deer 🦌 running but wow! Thanks for sharing the tranquility of the creek and snowy tent🙏🏻😁💕!
I love that creek!
It's so beautiful out there. Know why you like being out at the creek. Enjoy 😊. Stay Blessed 😇🙏🙏🙏..
Please put a spark arrester on your stove! Love the tent!
The utensils they had back in the day were metal. My Grandmother, Mom and me have metal it didn’t hurt the cast Iron cookware.
If you don’t know you can get another cup of tea out of the teabag. 😉
God Bless everyone 🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
I would probably move it a foot or so further from the water and rocks. A canvas tent is super hot in here he summer. I would get a vinyl tent for the summer. Unless you have a small fan or a/c with a generator. I have never been camping in winter much less snow. I like your whole set up of cook stove/heater. Way to go.
Oops, not vinyl, I meant nylon.
Beautiful scenery!! I got cold just watching it. I can’t imagine what it was like back in the day.
Beautiful!!!
