    Excellent video! Great idea using a light fixture cover with a hoe already drilled in the bottom. This planting is so lovely. Well done! 👌🪴🥰

    Gosh, that glass lampshade is also a perfect idea to use as a bird bath too - just cover the hole

    Hello gardener Scott! I would love to see an update on your bowl! I just bought my first Sempervivum. I also have a Moon cactus, spider plant and aloe vera plant

    Well explained, thank you. I made several smaller bowls for friends and distributed them already before I had a chance to watch this video. A couple had asked about care instructions and that is when I watched this tutorial.
    I did use sandy soil. In addition, I added pea gravel to the top of all the bowls. My concern is that I did not put them in bowls that had drainage. Is this going to be a problem?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You may need to monitor the soil moisture level more often to avoid the plant roots sitting in water.

    Is it best to use a glass or perhaps, more so- a clay container verses plastic due to need for breath-ability, hence suppressing potential root rot?
    Will a rock layer on the bottom of a plastic troth be help for drainage, (without a drainage hole), or will it simply trap more moisture?
    I have saved these plants more than once from too much moisture is in this high altitude desert; we are living in a generally dry climate, other than the usually the monsoon season.
    Ty for a concise preservation.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rocks at the bottom do not improve drainage and can trap water in a layer at the bottom, which could lead to rot in either plastic or glass. Checking soil moisture level before watering can help.

    • @actionadvocate5765
      @actionadvocate5765 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. I did not mean to use rocks instead of having a hole in the container, but this knowledge, helps! Be well.

      Some of the leaves may root if you put an edge in moist soil.

    Just curious - does the indoor container need a drainage hole?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Having drainage for the bowl helps avoid soil saturation.

  • @elizabethkeith9341
    @elizabethkeith9341 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the drain hole need to be covered with a screen or landscape fabric?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It helps to have a screen to keep soil from draining out.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on how well your soil drains you may need to water a couple times a week. That's what I do.

    Wow this was a great informative video. I have been trying repeatedly with no success to propagate. Can the hens and chicks become a permanent house plant ? Some say mist your propagation every 2nd day then others say place on catus soil and leave it.. I am so confused !!😢 so discouraged before I even begin.
    But you have very much peeked my interest with the hens and chicks... Thank you... I will be watching all your tutorial
    Love that you are straight to.the point...

      I've had my bowl for almost two years now. Some of the plants have died because I didn't water as often as I should, but many are still doing well. It's hard to find the right balance, but for me watering once a week is enough.

    Hello. I have a succulent that growing straight up. It looks healthy, green. I haven't over watered it. I gets good sun & shade both. I'm new at this so I'm not sure what it is. It's about 6-8inches & has grown from the middle of another succulent. I wish I could upload a pic. It's kinda funny looking. Is this good or bad? It's very pretty. I'm not sure what to do with it. Thanks for any help!

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have that too. Some of it may be due to poor lighting. It can also be how that plant propagates and the tip can be bent to the soil and reroot.

    • @GardenerScott

      It can be, but it depends on the specific mix.

    My hens and chicks are turning brown at the base. The original one with a huge central hen dried out slowly and died. I had transplanted a few chicks from that, most of them dried at the base. Only three are doing fine but I notice one of the three (that survived a snowy winter) has turned red and it's gradually drying at the base. And none are producing any chick.
    What am I doing wrong?

    • @medusasaurus1447
      @medusasaurus1447 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the original one dries out and dies like that- make sure to pluck it out, and give the new chicks more time to take its place and get the nutrients it needs. Otherwise the dying original one is taking all of their yum-Yums

    Is there a best time of year to separate the hens and chicks? I’m brand new to succulents. I live in Sydney Australia. It’s a temperate zone, similar to California. I bought one and it seems to me to be tightly compacted with chicks. Is this their normal habit? I’ve been thinking about separating some of the smaller outside ones so will follow your video. Thanks.

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      When the chicks grow and reach a size that begins to interfere with the hen, I usually separate them. Different plants can grow quite tight as part of their normal growth.

    I wanted to plants these around my shed but I have a sprinkler system that comes on every other day and I'm worried they will get too much water. Anyway to care for that?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Too much water can be bad for succulents but you may be able to correct for that. You can try shallow pots and containers to raise them above the ground to improve drainage. Planting in a very sandy soil with gravel mulch will allow the water to drain easily and that may be enough too.

    I just bought a sempervivum plant and this was helpful, thanks. Is it true that the mother plant dies after giving out chicks? Can you propogate from leaves?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It varies a bit between sempervivum. The mother will eventually die, but may give you a few years of chicks before that. You can propagate from leaves; it's works best if a small piece of stem is attached to the leaf base.

    How long does it take a "hen" to produce a "chick"?

    • @GardenerScott
      @GardenerScott  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on specific varieties and is seasonal, but they typically produce a couple times each year.

      Let the soil dry out and see if any of the plants bounce back. If they do reduce the amount of watering.
