Good summary. Recall that this is a full blown homage to the Romantic movement both philosophically and aesthetically. Mary Shelley's mother is considered as the first feminist activist. This was the first time I've resonated so much with a character. As a male watching this film, it came across to me as a 'male sex fantasy', albeit a perverse one, disguised as an 'intellectual' film, which it certainly wasn't. The film never rose above a comic book level of culture. I feel the same way about 'Dogtooth', and in fact, most modern pseudo-intellectual films. The Pre-Code film-makers were honest about their motives, for cramming as much titillation into a film as possible - to get back-sides on seats. Today's Pharisaical film-makers, have devised countless pretexts and mental contortions, to justify the same dubious practices as the Pre-Code filmmakers. Furthermore, if 'sex' is at the fulcrum of all their artistic endeavors, it hasn't occurred to them, that you can produce an arty piece of cinema about sex, without resorting to the exploitation of the feminine form. Hal Hartley's 'Surviving Desire' fulfils all the demands required of great and enduring art, for that very reason. Mick La Salle's piece on 'Poor Things' is worth reading, as he presents a watertight case against the film's preposterous smugness.
Where did Duncan come from, I saw the movie yesterday and it looked like he only merely went through the second floor open window, touched her knee and they went off while she was still engaged to be married?
I believe Godwin needed to put together a legal document for Max and Bella’s marriage, and the terms of it being so peculiar and never seen before (the woman cannot leave the house), Duncan was intrigued. I think he was either the lawyer putting together the document or a rich man with connections who heard about it from word getting around

When watching the movie I kept comparing her growth to that of the monster in the Frankenstein original book. Frankenstein’s monster did learn relatively fast how to speak by observing people from afar and I can’t help but compare that to Bella’s learning which would have obviously been a lot faster since she is pretty so people we’re not frightened of her (leading to her being taken advantage of when she was naive and had the brain of a child) and she later had the ability to speak to interact with people one on one. With that in mind her growth felt very natural to me throughout the movie.
@@Andrea-rc1gz It's like she left Kansas, went to see OZ (Sodom & Gomorrah), worked at the Witch's whorehouse to learn that men are all selfishly insecure & dogs then returns to Kansas back where she could have avoided all that unnecessary disappointment. And all that without any of the excitement, drama, plot and intrigue that Dorothy experienced.
@@Andrea-rc1gz THE MOVIE WALKS A FINE LINE as CLUMSILY as BELLA's first baby steps. I left so let down & feeling like the poor thing was me having gone to see it! I view the mainstream praise as a reflection of our times where superficiality vs substance has become the norm. If there's enough surface glitter, lip filler, butt padding & marketing ferocity then there's a good chance of success. Like a Frankenstein monster, Poor Things was a series of pieced-together events that touched on several deep social issues yet followed through on none of them. Like a Frankenstein who's threads are were loose vs sewn tight., much of her character was just plain contradictory. For one, her performance seemed to be retarded at first rather than a newborn innocently becoming aware while her unrestrained bluntness & unfettered reactions seemed too cold & cruel and lacking any sweet naive childlike innocence or wide-eyed curiosity. She was often emotionally one dimensional & distant, IMO. Later attempts were made to humanize her but by then the story had already begun to drag & the many narrative ideas remained unresolved. SO MANY CRITICS HAVE HAD THE EXACT SAME REACTIONS to the film so I know I'm not just being purely subjective. EITHER YOU CAN IGNORE ALL THE BROKEN PIECES of the Story or they stand out like a sore thumb. Maybe the pretty nature on the surface camouflaged the holes in the film or the quirkiness but it was far from the best thing since sliced bread. In fact it ended up being mostly just icing without much cake! I find it interesting that people care less about seamless intricate complex storytelling & more about surface decoration. Some directors can do both. Although there were a few funs scenes, none of them validate the flaws of the overall film. At times her actions are CONTRADICTORY & hypocritical to a Story that was CONVOLUTED in it's exploration of many social themes which were never resolved. Many scenes were pretty but ARBITRARY and did little to progress the narrative! Her FRANKENHOOKER phase was wild & a bit intense but it was mostly contrary to her strong free-willed independent nature. Concepts of misogyny, pedophilia, prostitution, abuse only serve to SHOCK rather than reveal any true insight, empathy or heroic sentiment. For all the men bashing she then freely allows a woman, the Madame Dwarf, to use & abuse her. Saying nothing about contraception and STD's. Often I was just confused to whether or not to laugh or frown. Nevertheless the IMAGERY is stimulating to watch but the STORY just gets SLOW around 3/4 the way through. After all the controversial SEX, when it should become full of intrigue, conflict resolution or drama it stalls when her new found "ENLIGHTENMENT" BOAT TOUR tries to get Political, to no successful conclusion except to END with a GOAT SACRIFICE & sick operation to show REVENGE towards her estranged Father, a stranger to us & her the entire film only with her return to a non-romantic relationship with a FEEBLE wannabe Frankenstein Scientist Husband who unsuccessfully did to that poor girl exactly what was done to Bella. WTF!!! I LEFT UNINSPIRED, unsympathetic, irritated over the whole experiences! > Please GO WATCH any TERRY GILLIAM film * or PIERRE JUENET's "Amelie" or 'City of Lost Children" (in French) or even DEL TORO'S "The Shape of Water" to experience truly strange, VISIONARY, eclectic, quirky, enriched, yet fascinatingly cohesive FAIRYTALE STORYTELLING. Heck you can even rewatch the classic "The WIZARD of OZ" to experience a film of this style, done EXCELLENTLY in 1939!
All I read was that you were looking for prescribed solutions about our complex world in a piece of art with limited run time. Art should provoke questions, it is not dogma or law making, art is an exploration, Bella is an explorer, she realizes that, and keeps pursuing it. She creates her family circle, she has tasted all the fruits that were offered to her, now she is seasoned explorer, creating and searching out of her own volition. And yikes, your observations about Bella's evolving sexual journey reeks of respectability politics (and control). As a woman, it is tiring to pretend that all that I do is what I want, when all the choices given to me were to please others (men). I wish girls and women had the opportunities like Bella to discover what they want without the control of a mommy or daddy, and free themselves. She lives in the moment and it is glorious.
Yes Elizabeth! I was shocked by how moved I was by it and had to see it again to ensure I wasn’t just using recency bias, I believe it to be that profound and important to me. Go check it out if you can!

Aah no worries! I did enjoy your video very much tho. Also, I saw the movie last week. Thought I wasn’t going to like it, but I actually did like it. So your analysis makes a lot more sense now hahh.
I just saw all the sex clips of this movie. Despite it being very creative and creepy and surreal in cinematography this film should be X-rated. The sex scenes were extremely disturbing and graphic and looked like they were filmed by the director of Ken Park film who did Kids, Bully…
This is not about sex . You got my message all wrong honey. It’s about content and the fact that you’re filming sex scenes that belong with NC-17 rating glorified in Hollywood. I have seen loads of R-rated movies from the 1970s through the 90s . If you want to create a porn film go ahead, just don’t BS movie goers and make this film about female awakening. It’s a creative porno film. It doesn’t belong in the Golden Globe Awards nor any awards. If the director wanted to add Sex scenes, that’s fine but keep it dignified not to shock you. I like a good movie with creative cinematography and excellent dialogue and story. Not a glorified movie about various sex positions and how far one has to go to get the viewer. Then it’s not a good movie but a cheap sell. How about you grow up yourself. I guess these movies turn you on… that’s okay but you can view them on pornhub.
The scene with the dad and kids has many cuts, and the kids are not in the same frame, suggesting they were not present while the sex scene was being filmed.

It still doesn’t change the fact that the scene was banned in England and should not have been allowed-it’s child pornography. There is nothing wrong with the cinematography surrealism dark imagery but the story has no content nor direction … just weird Bizzare perversion.@@jennyrodriguez811
I want to know what drugs was this director on, despite the creative and creepy cinematography of the movie the sex destroys the movie completely. And should be a dark drama fantasy erotic porn movie not comedy/musical. Mark Ruffalo is the new Harvey Keitel or Marlon Brando and Emma Stone is now Holly Hunter (The Piano) or Maria Schneider Last Tango in Paris. I guess the director needs to get it Up.
it feels like this commentary is incredibly limited and fettered by the total avoidance of the subject of misogyny in general and a materialist analysis of female body autonomy in particular…
A movie that was actually about female sexual empowerment would feature a lot more of the kinds of sex that make women orgasm. Penetrative sex, though tons of fun, isn't particularly high on that list, but is the vast majority of the sex here. It might also show women indulging in sex when and where they want it, rather than with men who disgust them while working under am abusive pimp. Her having sex for money is not, either in the movie nor in real life, a powerful expression of bodily autonomy and empowerment. It's in large part about pleasing men so you can eat. The trope that girls become women through sexual activity with men is just so . . backward. And that idea underpins much of this movie. It's a gorgeous film but clearly written by, directly by, and for the gaze of men. @@steveskonntent
Pompous erudite unable to spell the word, "Judgment". Brilliant review written by a narcissist in front of a mirror. The review imho turned into a romp through the teatrical countryside leaving all who weren't devotees at 100%+ wondering if it paid to flip back and re-listen and re-experience the splashing torrent of words and concepts. The reviewer leaves little to the normal person to reflect on. That reflection is long in the rear view mirror as the reviewer ploughs on. The tragedy here is the reviewer completely ignores the incessant nudity and sexuality in the nude by the protagonist, Bella. This aspect of the film is groundbreaking. But the reviewer addressed it like one does an elephant in the living room. Emma was bold, risk taking, objective, and the character was honest without external norms casting sway on what are repetitive illicit acts. Though shocking, the scenes are so well done, the viewer quickly agrees with the filmmaker, that they are "right" for this character. Kudos to the entire company.
Thank you for this comment. Comments like these are why I want to continue sharing analyses and improving. Going to reflect on your words and my own, I greatly appreciate it! I hadn’t realized the correct spelling of Judgment was so, it seems it’s one of those fringe words where both spelling is accepted. Have a great day❤
If you call glorified high art 2:57 pornography.glorifying fornication and various sexual perversions a Masterpiece. Then Poor Things is a definitive work.

Well said ❤
As a male watching this film, it came across to me as a 'male sex fantasy', albeit a perverse one, disguised as an 'intellectual' film, which it certainly wasn't.
I really really lloved this film ❤
Where did Duncan come from, I saw the movie yesterday and it looked like he only merely went through the second floor open window, touched her knee and they went off while she was still engaged to be married?
I believe Godwin needed to put together a legal document for Max and Bella’s marriage, and the terms of it being so peculiar and never seen before (the woman cannot leave the house), Duncan was intrigued. I think he was either the lawyer putting together the document or a rich man with connections who heard about it from word getting around
If she had evolved like a normal child there may have been more than her nymphomania to focus on instead she evolves like a AI Robot. Her character simply didn't developed into maturity which caused the film to go nowhere emotionally without any dramatic fulfilling narrative of conflict resolution. Glossy & fascinating visually, Interesting dark premise & concept with wonderful cast and acting, but a bit weak in terms of narrative intrigue and dramatic intensity that resolved or without any of the orgasmic pleasure & climaxes like those she enjoyed throughout the film! And why no sexual desires for her most humane & honest encounter, the Black guy? LOL! I just left the theater without feeling any lasting "emotional" impact & felt just as COLD AS SHE WAS towards most everyone and everything. After a while a child's brain becomes self-conscious about their social actions and that goat was just silly. SMH. Her 2 dimensional evolution didn't evolve the story. Nothing deep about this film. Just pretty filmmaking & surface bling. This was no brilliantly written, Terry Gilliam or Guillermo Del Toro cinematic gem
Very nice review, thank you
Amazing film
Poor Things is #2 on your personal all time favorite film list? I hope to see it soon:)
Yes Elizabeth! I was shocked by how moved I was by it and had to see it again to ensure I wasn’t just using recency bias, I believe it to be that profound and important to me. Go check it out if you can!
Beautifully put

i wanted to watch this video with my headphones on, but I have hearing loss in my right ear and for some reason there was only sound on the right side of my headphones. :(
Noooo, I’m sorry! That’s being fixed for future videos so we don’t run into this problem
Aah no worries! I did enjoy your video very much tho. Also, I saw the movie last week. Thought I wasn’t going to like it, but I actually did like it. So your analysis makes a lot more sense now hahh.

If the blatant sex scenes didn't distract so much I'd recommend it to more people
Great review but I have to say that I hated this movie, sorry to say.
To each their own, I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the review! This film is a polarizing one
A MASTERPIECE IS ACCLAIMED AND RECOGNIZED BY A GREAT MAJORITY, AND THIS IS NOT THE CASE
I just saw all the sex clips of this movie. Despite it being very creative and creepy and surreal in cinematography this film should be X-rated. The sex scenes were extremely disturbing and graphic and looked like they were filmed by the director of Ken Park film who did Kids, Bully…
sex isn’t disturbing. grow up.

Too much gratuitous nudity of Emma Stone's character. For me it was a distraction from the incredible performance she gave.
it feels like this commentary is incredibly limited and fettered by the total avoidance of the subject of misogyny in general and a materialist analysis of female body autonomy in particular…
Please do expand, always eager to hear a differing opinion
Have a great day❤
Eh, didn’t care for it.
If you call glorified high art 2:57 pornography.glorifying fornication and various sexual perversions a Masterpiece. Then Poor Things is a definitive work.
Where did you feel that the sexual subject matter was glorified? In my eyes, it was simply presented objectively throughout the film. At the end, Bella even develops opinions that drive her away from her previous sexual behavior.
Seeing a boob is not pornography.
@@steveskonntent Glad you enjoy distasteful comedies that justify predatory actions. Loved Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma stone till I watched this pretentious garbage.
