I was thinking it was possibly a box to hold tea until you pulled out the wee side drawer. So interesting! Thank you David, once again, you've provided great information.
Great video David im really learning alot about antiques here, lots of good pointers, please keep the educational videos coming amongst the other stuff. Its what I find most interesting.
A lovely Chinese box! Thanks David for all the information - very interesting. I valued it at £400. I was a bit out but I would have paid that for it...
I thought "bench" before David even mentioned it. Daybed is what we Americans would call it. Could this have been a salesman's sample from way back, or just a novelty piece made that way just because they could? I"m not surprised at the valuation, except that it's about twice what I'd get for it here.
Beautiful box and construct-love how you pointed out its irregularities in helping to determine its authenticity as an antique. Question, how did you actually arrive at/pinpoint the approximate date of 1880ish as patina is relative to use and exposure, for instance. Would the Cabriole leg decorations have given that away? Brilliant stuff, thanks D! --Shae down under.
These are Chinese dowry items. This particular type is called a 木梳妆盒 (wooden vanity box). They were used to hold makeup, sewing needle, combs etc and the top functioned as a mirror stand. Yours is from the Zhejiang region (very easy to recognize this style of decoration). Not a bad video! By the way, these get dated to late Qing but honestly they could just as easily be Republican era.

yes I was thinking a sample box - to show bed samples - and maybe the fine art of making the bed 😀😀😀😀
Sample box would be perfect
It definitely is a beautiful box and thank you for the education David!
My pleasure Cathryn

Instinct based on experience comes into it, but the colour, construction using dovetails is one (a western import) and general feel. D
I estimated £900, so hard to know with Chinese antiques though, I’d be tempted to try it at a good auction with a high reserve.
You’re right, you never know with Chinese pieces !
Dear David Harper, it's a cool box. Dragons.
Always look at the bottom 🙂
