  • A quick end of year review of the 310 GS (with the Rally Raid Stage 2 kit on)
    If you've got one let me know how you've got on with it; what you like and don't like, and whether you're going to keep it and if so, what would you swap it for.

    Thank's for your video !
    I have had mine G310GS for over two years now, and I have some more older BMW K-bikes also.
    This is the first choise when going to smaller roads, to commute, explore gravel roads and so...
    My model is the 2019 with Euro4, and it stalls easy when you don't know how to overcome it with throttle and clutch.
    I have ride my bike over 15000 km now and like it very much, I'm 60 years and have ride bikes since I was 16 years every year.
    The choise for the 310GS is first of all, a light bike, a BMW and also the price tag used.
    I do all maintenance myself of the bike.
    Nothing have gone wrong with it, only the original battery went south last summer, but replaced it with a Li-ion battery.
    Look for my videos from my rides with the BMW G310GS - The old biker -

    Always something sensible from you, Nathan. Cool and considered opinions, and proper ‘real world’ experience of the sort of bikes that catch my eye. Perhaps the various design teams for the many dual-sport and ‘RTW’ adventure bikes would do well to tune in to your YT channel before they fire up their electronic drawing boards! Thanks, Les

    I have a 2023 310gs that I bought a year and a half ago and have about 4500 miles on it. I use it as a street bike and the only add on I’ve done is a windshield and a top case. Runs like a top and gets 73 mpg USA. I kinda whinced when you said the 411 was a better gs than this is because my understanding of the RE is the valves need adjusting every 6,000 miles which sounds like a lot. The 310 just keeps humming along. I know you were referring to their trail handling capabilities though. So that’s fair. I understand the earlier versions had their problems but this iteration seems like they’ve ironed it all out. I think it would be a shame if they discontinued it after they bring out the 450gs. The 450 sounds like a premium bike and this would fit in as it is, an entry level bike. Excellent video and a honest review.

    Excellent value for money second hand. I bought new and think, retrospectively, that was a mistake. But I really enjoy the bike, which I use primarily for a short commute and the occasional green lane.

    I had a 310GS Euro4 for a very short period of time - it's a good bike, but I could never tolerate the way it would stall when I really didn't think it should when off-road or doing low speed manoeuvres; sometimes it would do it so often that it would really become annoying. Went over to the old Himi 411 because if it aint broke don't fix it, and the 411 aint broke! Chugs like a Lanz Bulldog tractor!

    Thanks for the great commentary. I’m a 65 year old, beginner rider in the western US, and just now looking to buy my first bike. The RE Himalayan 450 and the BMW G310GS are the two finally contenders, both due to their great on road capability as well as their good off road capability. I really like both bikes and I am having a difficult time deciding, and your opinion would be welcomed. Another option would be buying a Honda CRF 300L dual sport, learning on it for a year, then trading up to a more adventure friendly, on road capable bike. Cheers.

    CF Moto have shown just how out of touch many manufacturers had become. And yet their 450MT is essentially an updated KLE500 which first launched back in 1991. Kawasaki must be kicking themselves, they ignored calls for a versys 400 & now they are playing catch up.

    One of the main things that brands like CF Moto or Royal Enfield is showing, that the price hike from the main brands don't justify the offers we get from them. End the overpriced monopoly and bring back the quality we can afford is something we all need.

    • @sailor4365
      @sailor4365 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      These is no monopoly in this market as far as I know. Big brands can reduce prices by reducing markups and marketing but you can't expect Yamaha, for example, to compete with CFMoto as long as they continue production in France and pay EU wages.

      Funnily enough my 310 GS cost less than a Himalayan would have cost. Actually, it was cheapest in the class back in 2021. I would have considered the RE but the BMW seemed like the better deal, especially as I preferred the motorway capability.

    6:03 Try the footpeg mount maybe?
    Turn the handlebars to a full lock to the right.
    Pull in the front brake lever to ensure the motorcycle does not roll during the mount
    Step onto the left foot peg with your left foot
    Lean forward from the hips (like a hinge), getting your chest over the bike’s centre line
    Swiftly swing your right leg over to the right foot peg

    It'll be interesting to see a longer term review of the 650, I had a GS650G for a couple of years and while it was OK the vibes through the pegs killed it for me. Any more than an hour riding left my feet buzzing, I tried new pegs, rubber bushes on the frame with no joy.
    I also found it slow with unpredictable handling, a Himalayan 411 would out perform it.

    Good summary buddy, If that BMW 450 is anywhere near 9k It’ll sell slower than they think. You’re asking people to put a lot of money then into a bike that’s price matching bikes like the Tuareg 660. Big ask. 4-7k is where these bikes top out in my humble opinion anyways. Nobody has the disposable cash we used to have and these ‘big brand’ need to recognise that. It’s definitely playing a role in ktms issues at the moment. Especially as the likes of cfmoto and RE feel premium enough for most people anyway. It’s only the die hards that’ll part with £9000 for a small cc bmw and are there many of them around nowadays with service costs at astronomical prices. 😬 same goes for the ktm 390 They both need to be sub £7000 to compete in my eyes.
    I’m not sure I guess we’ll see.

  • @simoncox7110
    @simoncox7110 14 วันที่ผ่านมา

    A mistake to get rid of the 310 from the fleet I think as it's still a bike worth considering in this category considering that there's plenty available new and used at great prices. In fact here in the UK could get a brand new one for around £1k less than the CFMoto, even though it's list price is more than the CFMotos. Considering this and that it's much lighter and easier to manage than say the CFMoto I'd hardly say that there was no longer a place for it, so if I was doing one of your "small capacity ride them back to back bike" days it'd have been a bike I'd have expected to be able to give a try. Just my opinion.

    • @nathanthepostman
      @nathanthepostman  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Appreciate the opinion simon but from my experience of what people want to ride it's just not that popular and so selling it helps fund new bikes that will draw people down such as new 390 Enduro or drz. With bottomless pockets you'd keep them all, but sometimes something has to go to make way for something new.

    I bought a 23 GS in September if that year. Have just about 4,900 miles on it. Have most of the Rally Raid components. Really changed the bike. I commute 65 miles when weather allows, live central US where backroads, gravel and dirt are a couple miles away. Live near a River where everyone tears up trails with lots of sand. Very reliable without any of the stall issues of early model. I can wring it out and still get 65 mpg. I have a stretch of highway on my commute that allows 75 mph, but mostly 45-55 mph with some twists and hills. I highly recommend.

    OK so I have had a love hate relationship with mine. I've had it six months. However I've sorted the performance by a full stainless exhaust system that removed all the restrictions wow what a difference, then added a 17t front sprocket and it's made a different bike next item on the list the rally raid front springs. It's a very good bike now and is a completely different ride with a lot more torque in the right places, I first rode the bike after purchasing it blind and was a little underwhelmed but from the two changes I've made it's a different bike we bought two one 22 reg and a 20 reg I would definitely say the electronic throttle is much better aswell as the led headlights, both have identical delvic aftermarket exhaust systems for around £200 each which are road legal but the 22 plate is definitely louder probably due to the throttle. That's my opinion they can be made into fantastic little bike if you are willing to make a few in expensive changes. My review 7.5/10 makes it worth keeping in the garage. I will be makeing a Video on my channel on it soon.

Also had F800gs great engine but crappy suspension. The 310 is a nice bike, but for the money and the weight I bought a Husky 701 used.

    My G310GS was a total disaster. Bought new in 2019 as a second bike and it had endless problems. It needed a new clutch, new switchgear, new front brake calliper, starting issues below 10 degrees, heated grips would not integrate properly, numerous other niggles coupled with a appalling dealer who I had to threaten with legal action for them to fix things which they claimed were my fault. The dealer is 1 mile from my home but I will never deal with them or touch BMW again. Shoddy quality bike and service at a premium price. I now have a Triumph Tiger 850 Sport & a Honda CB750 Hornet.

      As I later discovered the G310GS uses all the components of the TVS 300 Apache, a bike made in India and sold in the Indian market for £2300 in 2019. BMW only designed the frame for the GS styling and I paid around £5300 for mine. Typical badge engineering using cheap, sub standard components, put a BMW badge on it and sell it for twice the price as a premium product. I sold mine just before the 3 year warranty ran out as I'd lost all confidence in the bike and the dealer.

      @@kalamityken3416 I've had a few of the more recent budget Indian made bikes and a budget Chinese bike, and I have to say that in this price range, take the Chinese bike every time. So the new 450 might be 9 bags? Gordon Bennett.
    That buys a new RE800. I appreciate that they are completely different bikes, but it gives it some perspective. Having said that I didn't buy an RE either, but wanted to confirm for sure I needed to go downsize again ( from dl650xt) . Fabulous engine but I couldn't take it where I like to ride.
    Another grand geykts you a T7. New.
    It's a bigger heavier bike though.
    So if you really want a light travel, not trail/endure bike, and this is the BMW's class of bike, would you pay 9G when RE, Reiju, CF Moto, Voge, etc etc will sell you a very good bike for about 6?
    Your older, well off types maybe, but I can't see new blood forking out 9, and definitely not emerging markets.
    Which would be a shame, if its a good bike.
    The G650gs and Serteo ( wire wheels) which were reintroduced were about 4bags new. But didn't see many. Didn't garner the same following as the original 650 single they were based on. Wrong bike wrong time. And still with the water pump issue.
    I guess I'm saying I have no idea. But I do know money talks.
    And a second hand gs310 looks a lot better bet for most than a new gs450 at 3 times the price.
    Ride safe 👍

      Motorcyclenews reckons the g650gs was £4920 in 2011. Adjusting for inflation thats a touch over £7k. It didn't have to pay off a new engine design, either. It's still significantly less than £9k, of course, but I reckon it could give a bit extra perspective.

      @randomg0at Fair comment.
      Although how much have peoples wages gone up since then?
      Don't get me wrong, I hope its a really good bike, and might make the Japanese get serious about this class.
      The nx500 is a good bike but lazy effort by Honda.
      A 500cc Africa Twin is what is needed.
      At the moment you can buy a Honda equivalent to a 12/1300 gs, and lots if people do.
      Kawasaki's new kle 500 might be one to watch.
      Interesting times.
      Ride safe 👍
