I think Kirby's mastery of visual storytelling is just starting to be seriously examined outside of the comic book world (and some of the childish criticisms and analysis I've seen on other channels). When you talk about Kirby you have to also account for the other masters of his time as well. This critique is a very good start. Good job!

Chic Stone is the GOAT Kirby inker.

I used to laugh that Ditko was a good inker for Kirby, but when I see Incredible Hulk #2, I love it. My favorite inker on Kirby is Royer because he lets Kirby have the blocky look that I love in the 70s, and his awesome lettering for the title pages are so cool and different from other comics at that time.

The first comics I read as a kid of Thor from my father (the spanish edition) by Jack Kirby, I remember that in the credits it was Joe Sinnot: "Embellecedor".
It has ALWAYS made sense to me. 🤔🤷‍♂️😉

Though he didn't do more than a few issues of Thor, I love the results of Bill Everett inking Kirby

I personally like D Bruce Berry inking Kirby I think he is an exceptional letterer as well , I bought a page of Kamandi ( page 13 from issue 24 ) twenty plus years ago now and I still love it as much now as the day I bought it, yes Berry kept it simple but for me it works .

      D. Bruce Berry had the best lines even smoother than Terry Austin.

This guy is out of his mind - with his praise of wretched Colletta.
p.s., first time I'm seeing Everrett over Kirby. WOW. Sinnott's my favorite but Everrett might be the GOAT. (Wood is amazing, but it looks almost nothing like Kirby.)

Mike Royer. When he inked Kirby's illustrations of large bodies you felt the swell and fall of the rolling surface.

Great talk- I thibk constantly about classic inking.
Love the Ditko inked Kirby as well- you see certain faces become more SD by virtue of blackspotting or line weight. That FF issue is one I constantly go back to. I believe there are a few monster era stories as well?

A few Tales to Astonish stories come to mind. FF #13 and Incredible Hulk #2 really stand out because of the Kirby/Ditko collaboration.

    D. Bruce Berry, my all time favorite inker, he was a pen and ink artist too.
Liked some of the other inkers too.

34:45 I love the super apes issue of FF. That's my favorite version of the Thing - The monster mudball! I wish the "on model" Thing wasn't so cutesy and remained just a little scarey.

I always remember that Kirby said that he appreciated the way Sinnott seemed to try to translate the stuff Kirby did in pencil into inks. Royer did more of a tracing kind of thing, not to be unfair to him. I think Anderson could have grown into doing the Sinnott "translation" thing if the two had been routinely associated.
I liked Wood and Barry Windsor-Smith on the 1976 Cap special.

I like the 4th World Omni, I don't want to figure out the publication dates. The thing is a beast at ~1500 pgs, it's a kitchen table book.

4th World Omni is fun bc it's by date, but they fucked up the double splashes! They are blown up from a file that fits in a single page. Annoyingly pixelated, such a chance bc I love to stare at those opening double splashes on Kirby DC comics.

I saw Josef Rubinstein at Wizard World Philly, he commented that Val Semeik's inking was 'very good'.

Alcala is in the tradition of Rembrandt and Kirby is more of a cubist.
A great combination would be Tom Sutton over Kirby, we'll never see it but i think the finish would look Barry Smith.

I did not like Royer or Berry that much. They looked too crude and lacking in detail. Perhaps, by that time Kirby was working too fast and not actually adding much detail himself. Tom Palmer was my favorite inker on anyone. I liked Colletta on Kirby's Thor and Sinnott on Kirby's FF.
