  • Scottie Barnes, Raptors agree to 5-year max extension worth up to $270 million: Report
Scottie Barnes has committed to the Toronto Raptors for the long term, agreeing to a five-year maximum rookie extension that could be worth up to $270 million, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. This deal marks a significant milestone for both Barnes and the Raptors, as it is the most lucrative contract in the franchise’s history.
Barnes, 22, has become an essential part of the Raptors' future plans, particularly after his standout performance in the 2023-24 NBA season. In his third year in the league, Barnes emerged as a star, making his first NBA All-Star Game appearance. He averaged impressive numbers: 19.9 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game while shooting 47.5% from the field and 34.1% from three-point range. His season was cut short by a broken hand that required surgery, causing him to miss the final 22 games, but his impact was undeniable.
The contract guarantees Barnes $225 million, with the potential to reach the supermaximum of $270 million if he earns All-NBA team, All-Defensive team, or MVP honors. This substantial commitment underscores the Raptors' belief in Barnes as the cornerstone of their franchise.
Over his first three NBA seasons, Barnes has shown remarkable versatility and consistency, averaging 16.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game. His ability to play multiple positions, including both forward spots and shooting guard, has been a significant asset for the team. In his rookie season, he was named NBA Rookie of the Year, signaling his potential early on.
Barnes made history as the first Raptors player since Chris Bosh in 2004-05 to record 1,000 points, 75 steals, and 75 blocks in a single season, highlighting his all-around game and defensive prowess.
The Raptors' commitment to Barnes comes amid a broader strategy to rebuild and revitalize the team. At the trade deadline, Toronto made significant moves by trading Pascal Siakam to the Indiana Pacers and OG Anunoby to the New York Knicks. These trades have paved the way for Barnes to take on a leading role within a young and promising core that includes RJ Barrett, Gradey Dick, Jalen McDaniels, and Jakob Poeltl.
Barnes has embraced this leadership role, expressing his determination to elevate the team's performance. "I promise we will be better," he wrote on Instagram following the conclusion of Toronto's season. The Raptors finished the season with a 25-57 record, placing them 12th in the Eastern Conference, but the organization is optimistic about the future with Barnes at the helm.
Looking ahead, the Raptors have the 19th and 31st picks in the 2024 NBA Draft, which begins on Wednesday. The team originally held the No. 8 pick but lost it in the trade for Poeltl, as it did not fall within the top six in the NBA draft lottery. These draft picks will be crucial as the Raptors continue to build around Barnes and aim for a resurgence in the coming seasons.
