    What a beautiful collection of Iris! I like how you are strategic in mixing the colors. Don't you wish they would last a little longer?! :) The hills around your place make it even more splendid. I can tell when we saw your neighbor's yard, how sloped it really is. Your garden is like a gorgeous painting. I love your beautiful thick hair! And yes, I heard your chick a dee. I have a few here so I make sure I feed them to keep them around. One of my favorites!

      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I do wish they lasted longer but I do also enjoy the transition to the summer blooms also. They would compete for attention. This year they have lasted longer than usual from our very cool weather. I do love the chickadee too, its song just screams 'Summertime'!

    Beautiful iris and I can hear it in your voice how much you love them.
    So why is it that some bearded iris stay upright and sturdy while others fall over? It’s frustrating when they fall over.

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      When they are blooming they can get top heavy. Mine will lean if it gets windy when they are blooming and it rocks them which loosens the roots, or if it rains and the blooms catch water making them more top heavy. Mine can also lean if they have to reach for the sun, we live in an area that is surrounded by tall evergreens and early in the summer the sun is behind the trees for part of the day.

      @@FlowerPatchFarmhouse Thank you for explaining this to me and sharing these great tips! I had never thought about them catching rainwater. I will try to watch if they start leaning over and add more stakes.

      Welcome to my channel! My soil varies around all my gardens. The front has heavy clay in some portions but I keep amending. Along the side it has been amended a lot as well. The back was junk fill and is quite sandy and doesn’t hole moisture well but again, I keep amending with compost, chicken manure and alfalfa hay mulch. It is an ongoing process, I have been at it for about 20 years.

      It really is coming along better than I anticipated. I am trying to think of what to incorporate to keep the color going. After the Iris fade there will be gaps but I am also trying not to overcrowd it. A balance needs to be found but I will have so much fun finding it!

    Mercy ! They are so beautiful. Before I downsized I had many many irises and I never purchased any of them. When I was younger I belonged to garden clubs. We all shared plants,seeds, bulbs and rhizomes . No internet videos back in my day. You have a terrific collection . Thank you for sharing

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse

      Wonderful! When I first started gardening decades ago, I did not join but was able to visit many local gardening club members and they were so generous with sharing starts, tuber, rhizomes etc. Most of my garden back then was created with all the plants gifted to me by others. And they took me under their wing and taught me a lot along with my Grandmothers who were avid gardeners. Both veggie and flower. They lived through the Great Depression and had so much to teach me about being able to create beauty when you have NO money. I will always be grateful.

      I add compost as needed and some of my chicken litter from the pen in Fall. I try to not get too heavy handed with nitrogen as the Iris don't need it. I sometimes will mulch with leaves from the neighbors as a weed block or some fir bark mulch when I can get my hands on it.

    So beautiful! I love bearded irises but they don't do very well in my subtropical climate of extreme heat and humidity. Many won't even bloom. Sad!

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I grew them well when I lived in a zone 9, lots of heat through the summer but it was a more Mediterranean climate. We would get 100-degree days consecutively for a couple months. Maybe your winters don't get quite cool enough. But on the up side, you can grow many plants I only dream of.😁

    • @alien11able
      @alien11able ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FlowerPatchFarmhouse I don't think it's the heat but the tropical humidity that causes the irises not to do well. My winters get really cold ... last winter it was below zero and around zero so I lost many native plants. Irises don't like being continuously wet and Arkansas is subtropical with 75% humidity. But my elephant ears love this climate. They get 7 ft tall and with heavy mulch, they over winter outside. But I love, love, love your garden! :)

    • @FlowerPatchFarmhouse
      @FlowerPatchFarmhouse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@alien11able LOL, see I told you things grow great for you that don't do well for me. I struggle to grow Elephant Ears but I do love them. I planted 9 this year in hopes of finding a spot somewhere in my gardens they will do well in. 😆
