    I love all these growing experiments! Bonsai is an art, but making good bonsai material requires just as much thought and finesse

      I agree! The experiments and finesse are what keep me interested and excited about growing. Always waiting to see how what you did affected the progress of the tree.

      I will! It's rained hard, half of my stuff is half underwater right now so on the bright side I guess they won't bother my trees for now!

    This is going to be epic! Can't imagine the root flare this bad boy will have. I've never seen a fully mature fusion project to my knowledge so not sure what they end up looking like.

      I would have included a few, but I wasn't sure how copyright would work. I guess on the other hand, if you don't see the others, this one will look pretty good no matter what! Haha. I forget the name of the man who kinda pioneered this, but I'll find it and let you know.

      @@smalltrees thanks! I'd be really interested to see some from its pioneer. I've seen some impressive clump style but this is another level.

      The original website is gone, but you can view the archive of it here. Pretty interesting stuff. web.archive.org/web/20020917233841/www.dugzbonsai.com/

      @@smalltrees fascinating stuff. Has a kind of fairytale quality to them but also very natural. I’m sure yours will be just as successful. Thanks for sharing.

    Great video! What are all those pink flags dotted around your garden?

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Those are seedlings planted through metal that are small enough that I felt like I should mark them until they grow a little more. I intend to lay out weed cloth, but I still need to finish planting trees in that area.

    Hoping for an update soon in late autumm-winter!!!

      We'll get a look at it once it sheds its leaves for the year. It's hard for me to get a good look right now even without a camera. I do know that there are a few seedlings that will have to be replaced, but luckily I grew my own seedlings this year so I have plenty.

    Do you have anymore undated on this? I’m really trying to do this with some trident maple cuttings that I’ll start spring (150 current you say?)I have the frame along with zip ties etc.

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the late reply. I shot a video last week but it is going to need at least another year of growth. I think 150 will be enough. I had several die, and my theory is that they were the first ones attached to the frame, and therefore had a rough time because it took a couple of days to finish. I'll try to edit and release the video this weekend.

      I am editing a video for this tree now. I was going to wait, but since the information will be helpful to you if you're wanting to try the project t yourself, I'm going to go ahead and release it. Should be out in an hour or two.

    why a raised grow bed vs. planting in the ground

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My ground soil isn't great, and I can more easily make a growing bed with good soil where I can replace the soil as needed.

    What is "turface" can i find something like that in europe (if u have any idea ofc)

    • @MsSaudm
      @MsSaudm 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its used on baseball fields to mark areas and some use it in place of the more expensive adakama clay soils

    • @smalltrees
      @smalltrees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What MsSaudm said. Any high fired clay product will work. Drystall (pumice I believe) and diatomaceous earth products could be used as a substitute. If you live in a small town, chicken grit could also be used, but it is sometimes made of oyster shell and as such might increase the pH of your soil.
