But it's maybe not the ideal solution, just seems to get a lot of unhealthy people to a healthier place, no matter if it's not the healthiest diet.

    I really appreciate this video. It's easy to feel like whatever you're doing with diet and exercise is wrong because of so many "influencers" have contradictory data.
    I will say, I've done the carnivore and animal based thing and lost 17 pounds in two weeks and felt amazing. There are vegetables that give me bowel issues and gut pain after I eat them. For example, even though I love squash and zucchini, I've gotten extremely sick for two days after eating them. So I do stay away from those because of consistent problems when eating them. But this video is spot on and I'm glad you said what you did!

    I do that--freeze the video, open a new tab, and google the name of the study. I don't always read the entire thing, but at the very least I check the abstract and conclusion, especially after videos by Greger, Taubes, Ludwig, and what's his name, the "pegan" guy, Hyman, and any other reductionist that I happen upon. I'm especially fond of CIM v. CICO rants. Then I look up the same topic and check Hall, Guyenet, and even Quackwatch for the super-reductionists.
    Nice one, Layne.

    • @Melesniannon

      What's CIM?
      And yeah, frequently you'll find the conclusion the researchers drew is entirely different than the conclusion the person citing the study is trying to draw. Typically, a person will yell "X is true, this study shows it!" and the conclusion of the study just reads "There appears to be a correlation X which may warrant further research as a topic of interest."

      You do have the option to not use social media at all... I don't use it and I have no idea what these influencers are doing or saying. I follow my own rules based on common sense and past experience and I'm doing fine. I wish more people would quit listening to people and start listening to themselves.

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@evec2022 People don't have a good track record when they listen to themselves. Your common sense, by its own definition, isn't just yours, it's from a common source. If you skip the fads and influencers your common sense is most likely based on local guidelines for standard diets which are either traditional, or from reliable authorities.
      You shouldn't forget the reason these influencers are so very wrong, *is* because they are listening to themselves and not to anyone reliable.

    • @evec2022
      @evec2022 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Melesniannon No, I believe the reason these influencers are so very wrong is that they spew their nonsense to other people. Listening to yourself with some guiding principles is not wrong. We may not all agree on what to eat but we all know that moving more is better. Just because people's track record for doing what's right after listening to themselves isn't great doesn't mean that listening to ourselves is not the right thing to do. As it stands, not only are people not listening to themselves, but they are listening to others. That's skewing their view on what is right. At least if they simply didn't act on what they knew was best for them, there is still a chance in doing it right one day.
      There are 2 things that we can all agree on: eat more vegetables and be more active. If we did nothing else than those two things, everyone would be just fine.

    • @Melesniannon
      @Melesniannon 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@evec2022 Actually when an action consequently leads to poor consequences, that is exactly the indication that it is not the right thing to do.
      It's weird that you're fine applying that to the notion of "listening to other people" but not to "listening to yourself".
      Your final conclusion is equally awkward, like eating more vegetables and being more active is going to solve all medical problems in the world. It's not bad advice barring that we should also question how much is too much; generally people will benefit from more of both because they are deficient in both. However it is not a miracle by which "everyone would be just fine".

    • @evec2022
      @evec2022 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I agree with all of this, and great points. I don't even think the people that post this information really care about anything except likes, views, and follows. They aren't passionate about it. They aren't teachers. They have barely a surface level of understanding and 99% of their posts are copy/paste from some other clip they saw; it's just a new trend they need to "hop on" and produce their content. They have been conditioned to believe that their "followers" need to hear it from THEM. So, anything to make "content" is what they'll do. If the world doesn't hear from them today, how will anyone ever get on with their lives? This is what an influencer thinks. So, they churn out hyperbole bullshit and create this crazy-ass perception that everything they do for themselves is life-changing. It isn't. Show me where everyone's life absolutely changed because they switched their glute routine. You can't. But the influencer factory will start a trend and unfortunately gullible people will fall for it. It's all this exaggerated utopia they think they live in and we're all here to consume. The internet is a powerful tool, but I really wish we didn't give just anyone a voice. Sadly, the flood gates are wide open and there's no going back. I think the point made in this video about doing your own research before making a decision is step #1.

    As a finance type, I’d be very happy with a mutual fund in which stock outcomes can be inversely related. The finance concept it the stock’s beta and a fund comprised of stocks with both positive and negative betas is a great fund over the longer term.

    What matters most is that a study, and information in general, is only as good as those rationalizing the data. Hence, it’s rather easy to see in places like LinkedIn that there are millions of “professionals” out there that are incompetent in their ability to rationalize data.

    I normally can't stand Layne Norton, but this video is spot on. 👍👍

    That was bracing. I did actually do that once - freeze frame, track down the study read it and quoted back the passage the influencer was saying backed him up. It clearly said the exact opposite. He’s never cited that study again. Small wins.

    Fitness Influencing is a business and it's product is content, you have to put out content to get paid and that means finding things to demonize or glorify, as, unfortunately, that is what gets clicks.

    Great video. Dr Gil Carvalho ( Nutrition Made Simple) is an exception to the norm. He is highly skilled in non biased interpretation of the totality of research.

    I like how Layne admits defacto he’s not an influencer. If he was, this video would also apply to him as well, and that would be strange. 😂
