I don't mean to recenter her story around a famous man, but something I took away from this is that Victor Hugo had a really, really sad life.

Sounds like she was doing well in her later years. You can live with schizophrenia and depression, it isn’t the end of a person’s life, except that there is risk of suicide. She lived a long life

Nico, you're timing on this topic is so serendipitous! Two reasons: I recently learned that "Les Miserables" is actually a book that is 1330 pages long! Over my (long!) lifetime, I've read it multiple times, never realizing that all I was reading were "abridged" versions cut down to 200 or 300 words! I am presently being totally fascinated by Hugo's REAL work! That book is HEAVY, both physically and psychologically! Secondly, I've been studying recent science developments as to the possible cause of schizophrenia. Perhaps a BACTERIA that gets into the brain, through lymph passages that no one knew existed until about 2012. At the same time, (around 2010) a cell that makes up a full 10% of the brain, known as "microglia" was discovered to be able to clip and cut perfectly healthy brain synapses at random! Turns out that cell that everyone ignored for 100 years, MIGHT be part of our immune system. That would make schizophrenia an autoimmune disorder!!! A strange theory, brand new ideas... but when I think of the number of famous people who supposedly had schizophrenia (EG: Joan of Arc!) and if only we knew the causes of the illness, and even better the treatment and/or cure... As always, you do wonderful work, and I am always astounded at the profound respect you show for all these people whose stories you tell.

A lot of human beings back then experienced the signs and symptoms termed Schizophrenia back then while arsenic was ending up in so many things and while there was no cure for sexual transmitted diseases too. Before lead instead later while the industrial revolution continued on. People like introvert writer Edgar Allen Poe and somewhat more of an extrovert James Joyce too. James Joyce who loved acting the part of Satan during play with all of his friends practising acting at the time when he was a child. Some people back then had more trouble managing those kind of signs and symptoms they were suffering from indoor pollution and urban outdoor pollution too than others did. The Victorian era was horrible for a lot of people. Which leads me to believe that it is possible for a more well known person to be under the delusion that someone is interested in them sexually when they are not at all. The whole story about Victor Hugos relative Adele only reminds me of why a whole lot of poor parents with a young attractive female teenager sometimes starts insisting that she stay home with them most of the time while she is being stalked. In fear that some day soon after getting picked for marriage by that stalker whom she insists is harmless only for him to later decide she is defective by that hubby of hers whereupon he would then throw her out onto the street.

She was probably bipolar and not schizophrenic. Schizophrenia has a hereditary factor and I doubt she´s have been able organized enough to follow him suffering from schizophrenia. Erotomania is often associated what is today known as BPD. BPD is often linked to trauma. She surely suffered a lot of that during her childhood (father´s affairs, rocky marriage and having to leave her home country). Sad life story of unfulfilled love, being locked away and loneliness. Thank you for covering it.
