My Gran always said to never have empty jars. She filled them with filtered water and placed them aside (until they needed to be used) in case of emergencies.
A lot of wasted space under those steps. In our old farmhouse we had huge shelves like that but there was a huge piano type hinge where a section swung out so you could access behind.
You got me at the 2:50 mark. "Tiny houses aren't good for homesteaders who are serious about preseerving food." Yet, as a poor family, that's all we can afford, as well as many others. Owning large houses on quite a bit of land simply isn't feasible for some folks. There's a 38 acre ranch in a "small town" not far away that is on the market for nearly $1 million. 😳😳. Some homes with even just 10 acres are selling for $300,000. No way that financially strapped families can own such expensive properties. We do the best we can, with what we can afford.
Totally agreeing with you about the cost and doing the best we can with what we've got. May I please ask what state you're in? Seems like 10 acres is a million dollars where I am.
I'm drooling! I totally get your excitement over you pantry overhaul! I enjoyed seeing your family working together. I told my husband, this is what happens when you have a large family - you don't have to call in favors from friends/family and hope someone will come help.
Looks great! I live in earthquake country and naturally worry about not having earthquake straps on the front of your shelves. I have nightmares of all my bottles smashing on the floor. lol! You did a beautiful job!
You are so fortunate to have a basement. I have a standup crawl space that I have turned into a pantry. It’s pretty full and will be full to the brim after this years harvest. I have one more spot where I can build shelves if need be. But I fully get it about storing food in other places.
We repurposed half of our den to make room for our food. I still ran out of space, so my 5 gallon buckets went out into the garage, where I also have my long term food storage, freezers and the extra fridge we use for fermented foods.
We never have empty jars in storage. Always can water into any empty jars for emergencies! They’re sitting there empty so we might as well put them to work!
I've been in apartments since the divorce in 2017. Just moved into a bigger place with a much bigger kitchen. Didn't realize just how many jars I have until I was unpacking. 😮 I need to start cooking big batches to fill them! Always a great gift.
I don’t have a basement … not common where I live … so … once my kids grew and no longer needed/ or wanted a den / playroom I turned it into a pantry 😂🤣😂🤣 but I still have stuff stored everywhere 🤣😂🤣
So nice to have such beautiful shelves as well as all of the storage! Makes it so pleasant going down to your basement. How are you blessed enough to not have critters getting into those paper bags on the bottom shelves?
Fantastic video, we are retired and getting ready to move onto 70 acres with a small house however it has a full basement and we are just getting ready to frame in a cold room as I put up also a ton of canning, we have metal and wood heavy duty shelving but the drawback is how wide the shelves are apart, so my hubby welded me freestanding shelves to go between them and it has literally doubled my space as well. I’m Excited to start our new life and have a new food storage cold room. Thanks for the great video on this subject 🌷🇨🇦
Thank you for this video - I took y’all’s idea of spacing shelves to accommodate each jar size. I am just getting started with homesteading, I had not canned since 1995 but I am loving it again. 😊❤🎉 Can’t share a picture here
Congratulations! Good thing you raised such strong and competent helpers. Although, it's the desire of those helpers for food that set off the need for the new-shelf project.
We have been working on creating a ‘walk-in pantry’ in a room off the kitchen. It is getting close to being complete but a much larger project than expected because of needing to move that room to a different area of the house first lol. My kitchen has no pantry in its design so I had been using some shelves in the laundry room, also off the kitchen, but it wasn’t really enough before and not even close to adequate after starting to garden and canning again. The room is not huge but I’m hoping will hold the necessary shelves as well as maybe the dehydrator and freeze dryer along with a couple of freezers. I’m not sure if there will be too much heat produced by the dehydrator and freeze dryer so we will see how that works out. Your shelves are beautiful! I think we are inspired and encouraged to keep going when we have efficient and functional spaces. Your video has definitely encouraged me to stay the course and to get the room done. Thank you for sharing.
My husband built some just like it. We ended up expanding into two rooms in the basement. When you get started, you really do not realise how much room you will take up. Lol it is like the loaves and fishes.
So they can tell us we asked for them too big instead of taking responsibility for making them outside of the basement without measuring first? Thank goodness they have muscle!
@@comenterrimcd2571 lol they did take the measurements. Just forgot to factor in the stair measurements. We are all human. At least we all could get a chuckle from it. Life's little hiccups are always good for a little humor and chuckles. That is another reason we have men around. They are great for uplifting a day and helping us see the humor in all our little foibles.
That is such a great space! I love to have everything organized by category but more importantly I like that the shelve units are all made the same way with the same material. My brain cannot focus when there is a cluttered look.
If you save the original canning jar boxes, you can store your empty canning jars in them, and stack them up on the floor. They are the right height for each size jar, so no wasted space on the floor. That way, all of your shelves can be used for the canned foods. We could never store any food in attics around here, as it gets to over 100 degrees in the spring and summer up there. I think a great deal of the country has the same problem, unfortunately. Josh did a great job building those shelves! They are beautiful!
It looks beautiful!!! I have a root cellar with shelving that needs expanded and my house pantry. Definitely would help for better organization. This gives me so many ideas on directionally where I need to go.
So exciting! We had to set up our pantry like grocery store isles sticking out from the wall in order to maximize storage, rather than lining shelves around the edges. .
What an amazing space! My dad built me a pantry in my downstairs last year and I absolutely LOVE it! It's definitely not as much space as you have but I only have 2 kids. It's been so wonderful to have that extra storage and we also did the different sized shelves. It's definitely a must, if your shelves are fixed.
the shelves are great but i would have made the bottom shelves smaller to put bigger shelves in the middle so when i am older i don't have to bend down to pick up heavier jars
Wow they are so nice the guys did a great job on it I wish I had a basement in my house I have had to get creative in storing my food I do have food stored in all parts of my house right now I have taken the coat closet that was in our entryway and my husband is putting up shelves so I can store all of my large appliances and one big counter top so I can have more workspace for meal prep 😊 🧡
Could we get a plan of those shelves the demensions of the shelves for different jar sizes like you have pint quart half gal gallon and then 5 gallon buckets i need shelves like this built by my hubby
Those shelves look so great, with both the spacing and designs! Do you have plans, or could you provide dimensions that were used (depth, and spacing between shelves)? This comes at a perfect time, as I actually just built a storage room in our house with this in mind.
I love you shelves!!!❤❤❤❤ It's so hard to have storage space in my apartment. I've put shelves everywhere I can. I hang decorative curtains on them so the contents are hidden when I have company.
My Gran always said to never have empty jars. She filled them with filtered water and placed them aside (until they needed to be used) in case of emergencies.
My mother-in-law always adds jars of water to canner loads that didn't have quite enough.
Building the shelves to big to fit down the stairs is totally something we would do. Lol😁
Awesome shelves ❣️ will you be sharing the plans for them?
I was about to ask the same.
Yes please!
Josh, you made Carolyn a happy wife!
My room (the entire basement) has been filled as well, such a good problem to have.
Your kids are so blessed to have a life filled with siblings and animals and space to be kids (and great parents!).
Love that you show that even experienced homesteaders can have an "oops" now and then❤ The shelves are awesome!😊
I miss my basement in Missouri so much. Your children are getting so grown up. Lovely to see the family working together.
A lot of wasted space under those steps. In our old farmhouse we had huge shelves like that but there was a huge piano type hinge where a section swung out so you could access behind.
That’s a great problem to have ❤❤❤

@Momma_Tomma thanks for that. Some serious snow y'all get up there!
Tiny homes aren't for serious homesteaders.
It’s the little things in life….. those shelves are great…..more storage space….. organizing……love it
I love this channel. You are like the Martha Stewart of homesteading.
Looks amazing!! ❤❤ Lots of hard work and lots of hard workers!! Great job
Should have made drawers under your stairs. You could have put you empty jars in the drawers to keep them handy.
Just had to pause the video to say beautiful family
Awesome space!
That looks amazing!
Lol yuppers same problem here so ended up buying More shelving unit's all over the house now
Your husband did a beautiful job on your shelfs! I am like you; I get excited when I have storage space. Just Beautiful!
Love those shelves!
The new shelves look amazing! I'm happy for you all. You are right about homesteading in a tiny home. It just doesn't work well at all.
JUST BEAUTIFUL! What a wonderful pantry you have!❤
Wonderful addition!! Storage is a constant change with adaptation.
I'm soo jealous of your shelves. ❤
Josh those shelves are both highly functional and very beautiful! Nice work!
The extra shelves look awesome.
Looks great!
Beautiful shelving

I love your pantry shelves.
They are beautiful. I would have needed a two week break after all that work.
Why not make a couple of deep sided trays so when your preserving you can move a lot of jars at once either full or empty
Great job everyone 😊
Absolutely beautiful you two!!
Looks great! I live in earthquake country and naturally worry about not having earthquake straps on the front of your shelves. I have nightmares of all my bottles smashing on the floor. lol! You did a beautiful job!
Great video!😊
That is AWESOME!!!!
Beautiful craftsmanship Josh & kids!! Love it
God bless the empty jar stacks! I feel ya. Grow on girl!
What a beautiful pantry!! I also really enjoyed this style of video.

Thanks so much for the great ideas and advice. It looks so nice. Good job.
Glad it was helpful!
Thats a good problem to have :)
Nice job Josh & kids, more shelving is always good!
Oh, Carolyn! So happy for your new beautiful space! Happy canning!
I love them.i must say im jealous 😂
Your pantry is a dream! So much space, and beautiful shelving.
Fantastic!
They look so good! I know that’ll help yall out so much. Good job 👍
I understand your excitement! Very nice.

Great team work! Love the shelves...hope you left a path for under the stairs. I was thinking of things you could store there, too. 🙂

Lol. I thought that was Carolyn sitting there with the baby at first.
Love it. Room for so much more food and storage for your canning supplies , pots and pans.
Maybe you can put moving shelves in front of existing ones
So blessed!!! ❤️
Real treasure!
Well done

Godless your precious Hubby and young helpers! Beautiful job!
Love the shelves and the idea of having them graduated. 👍👍👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🤣💕🌸🍀
