I served in 1984 for eight years in the US Army thank you for posting this it brings back memories I was a high school dropout no one would give me an opportunity except the United States Army I was a high school dropout the recruiter drove me every single day to and from an adult high school when I got my diploma he said do I want to join still I told him no one else would give me an opportunity give me 8 years in the service went to college after I got out I got into the medical field I want to thank the US Army for the opportunity and the values it gave me to succeed in life when no one else wanted to give me that opportunity thank you for posting this. I salute all my brothers and sisters who are currently serving some In Harm's Way and I thank them for their faithful service. Before the army the word can't was stuck in my head after basic training the word cannot was no longer stuck in my head the Army taught me you that you can succeed in anything you do if you try very hard

In the Short time I’ve been in so far, I’ve met former druggies, gangbangers, people from poverty stricken families and also people who had no where else to go.
The one thing they all had in common was a drive to do something different, and to be better and that right there filled me with pride like nothing I’ve ever felt before.

Be All You Can Be is more than a recruiting slogan. It is what every person should strive for, being the very best they can. In todays society, our youth need the motivation to stay out of gangs, stay off the streets, and focus on the much bigger picture. That much bigger picture is Being All They Can Be in doing their part to Building A Better America. I don’t recall when Be all you can be first became our slogan, but I do remember hearing it doing my 20 years of active duty from 72 -92..

I hate to say it when I went in in 83 it was still seen by a lot of people as being a place for ignorant losers.....I kept my joining under wraps when I was in high school.....I had one guy who was a jock who had some how found out I was going in say to me "Why the fuck are you joining the Army?".....I went to a good high school where almost 100 percent went on to university....I am so glad I went in....

I graduated HS in 1983 and joined the Army a few months after graduating. The Army paid me a LOT better than a full time job I had before joining and I got 3 promotions within a year since the Army promoted based on your performance and not a test or a popularity contest. I chose the Infantry but as a Tank Destroyer (MOS 11H) and I went to a lot of “career enhancement” schools which gave me some interesting skill sets. The perception of low IQ people being in the Infantry is far from reality, it got that perception thanks to McNamara’s Morons during Vietnam where they lowered the minimum IQ from 83 down to 70 but over the years since, the average IQ of an Infantryman is 120 since we hate doing the same boring job every day, we prefer fluid environments where we face challenges. The Army gave me a lot of benefits I enjoy now since I retired from Active Duty in 2009, no other civilian career will give you financial and medical benefits if you get injured and I’m well compensated.

My son was 99th percentile on ASVAB. He chose 11B and aspiring Ranger. Brilliant, self-reliant young men don't want 9 to 5's. The military, especially the Army is a perfect fit.

@@alchemicalsoul I’d be damn proud if that was my son! Well done dad! I never had the courage to go to Ranger school, a few of my buddies did and this was back in the late 80’s when things were a bit harder. I’m guessing his career will be fruitful and I know he won’t have to work around liberals (well, maybe on a rare occasion).

The callous treatment that vets get is something horrifying. I met a vet on the street the other day, he had been disabled and also had no home, but still had his old ID Card from when he was in during the 80s. Sometimes I see that and wonder if that’ll one day be me at the end of my service.

I think a lot of the disconnect comes from people who may not have had to face a lot of adversity in their life. I’m grateful that people don’t have to face those struggles in modern society, but my struggles in life made me into who I am today. Even though Americans have better lives today than they did 40 years ago, I think the lack of perspective is a big problem. When your back is against the wall, you quickly figure out what’s the most important to you. Public service, whether it’s the military or something else, gives you the opportunity to find out what those things are. I think if more people took the opportunity to serve, they’d figure out that their family, community, and country are the most important, and all the other bullshit doesn’t really matter.

Mos 45T Bradley Fighting Vehicle Engineer and previous in Louisiana ARMY National Guard in Mos 15p/93p Aviation Flight Operations Coordinator. Was in Operation Desert Storm in Kuwait. I wouldn't change anything for the love, respect, skill training , comrades that I met while in service on active duty. Attached to 2nd U.S. Marine Division as we had Bradley Fighting Vehicles that have mussle launcher where as Lav-25: Marine vehicles did not have. The Marines borrowed one of ours Nd little up Saddam's Republican Guard Force and they became toast together with The M-1 Abraham's Tank riding together in force Reconnaissance and I tell you with absolute truth they lit up the enemy like the fourth of July!
