Tom, got a very undesirable (to many), but very clean '76 Valiant sedan several years ago from the original owner for free. Had to promise not to flip it or cut it up, which I adhered to- I brought it across the US when I moved. Swapped on the 12" rotors & pin-style calipers from a '77 Cordoba, XHD V8 rear springs with poly bushings, Bergman Auto Craft front suspension, brake & steering kit, Bilstein shocks, USCT chassis stiffening, 8" wide, 16" Lincoln LSC 'turbine' aluminum wheels with 60-series Bridgestones...it does stop & handle far better than anybody expects. Engine wise, for now, I just used junkyard-sourced Edelbrock Performer intake, rebuilt Thermoquad with an electric choke & set up by "Mr. Clifton," a Summit double-roller timing kit as well as their cam & lifter kit (with specs that will work with the stock compression, 2.76 rear gear), 2.5" dual exhaust with old-school Magna-flow mufflers (X-crossover), and replaced all the consumable parts/wear parts. The car is a low-stress, fun cruiser that I have entered in vintage TDS events. I have a 340 slotted to be built & installed with a gearbox, 8.75" rear end w/discs...then paint & interior stuff. People use to blow off sedans, especially the cheap-end ones. But these days, they are coming onto their own. I have a GT350 and a '69 Swinger (converted to BB in about '78) that are cool, but the Valiant is more easy fun and lower stress to drive. Oh, I run CIBIE re-pop headlights with the LED bulbs, and for auxiliary lights I use a pair of 7" round, 310W LED, lights that have amber lens covers that snap in & out place that I mounted on brackets on the lower end of the bumper to the sides of the front plate.
